The direct ancestor of the firearm is the fire lance, a black-powder–filled tube attached to the end of a spear and used as a flamethrower (not to be confused with the Byzantine flamethrower); shrapnel was sometimes placed in the barrel so that it would fly out together with the flames.

“After the 500th hour of roaming around in Fallout 3, I finally found the Firelance. I spent what felt like an eternity looking for it between rocks & bushes after crashing near the Deathclaw Sanctuary in the middle of the night. The moment that tiny blaster appeared on my screen I stared at it for a full minute, just soaking up all the emotions and excitement. I took the little beauty & sped off to my apartment, giving it a place all for itself at the top of my weapons display shelf. I kept the save file on a usb & hid it away, ain’t nobody taking my Firelance.”
