About firefighter Percy: if he started around before or during college, that would also mean he served both in NYC and San Francisco. Meaning that he probably became a wildland firefighter too, right?
Well, the Caldecott tunnel (below the entrance to Camp Jupiter) is about a 30-40 minute drive to San Fran. So Iâm guessing he starts out working for Oakland Fire, or possibly Berkeley Fire, then transfers to the FDNY once he and Annabeth move back to the east coast. But yes, he probably would have gotten both wildland and structural firefighting experience, along with EMS, working in Cali.
That would be such a good intro to the field for him. Heâd have a blast lol.

When Percy opens the door to his house, itâs almost two in the morning. He is still in his uniform as he walks lightly through the dark space, sleeping the only thing on his mind after the night he just had.
When he opens the door to the bedroom, the first thing he notices is how the moonlight is strong as it comes through the window, completely bathing the sleeping body of his wife. Sheâs lying face down on the mattress, the covers up until almost the middle of her back, and she seems very peaceful. Even in his groggy state he canât stop himself from appreciating just how effortless beautiful she is. Sometimes he honestly canât make himself believe that this is real.
And thatâs when Percy spots a spider on her shoulders.
This is about one of the worst scenarios to happen in the Jackson household. Even though her fear subdued a lot since the Arachne thing, thereâs just a mutual understanding between them that Percy should take care of every spider that would appear in their house without her acknowledgement.
He moves closer and prepares to attack. He just really wants to do it without waking her.
The clapping sound is louder than he expected.
âWhat?!â Annabeth practically screams as she sits up, awaken by the loud sound, her hand going for the dagger on the nightstand. Sheâs alert and seems to be tense by the sudden awaken, her heart rate fast.
âHey, sorry, didnât mean to wake you.â Percy says nonchalantly as he quickly cleans his hands and starts changing into his sleeping boxers.
She looks at him for a couple of seconds, as if sheâs accepting heâs there, and then she goes back to the subject. âWhat happened?â
âNothing.â He dismisses.
âPercy.â She threatens.
âOk, promise me you wonât freak out.â
She rolls her eyes. âJust tell me already what could have possibly caused you to make such noise atâ she looks at the clock âtwo in the morning.â
âThere was a spider on your back.â
âThere was a what?!â She yells and jumps to the far end of the bed, slapping her arms and legs in a futile attempt to eliminate some non-existent spiders.
âItâs alright, just a spider, itâs gone now.â
âUgh, thatâs disgusting!â She says as she continues cleaning herself, as if she can feel webs everywhere.
Percy canât help but feel amused by this, staring at her from his place besides the bed.
When she notices his face, she glares and points her index finger at him. âIf you laugh, youâre sleeping on the couch.â
His mouth twitches, but he tries his best to stop the grin. She lets a small smile cover her own mouth, but still inspects his with a fake glare.
âYou should have more respect for a hero who was just out until two in the morning saving lives.â He says in an extremely cocky way as he draws the covers and lies down beside her.
âOh, wow, a national treasure.â Annabeth mocks as she adjusts the pillows. âA hero who saved, how many again?â And before he can say anything, sheâs counting on her finger. âThree⌠four⌠five! Five cats this past month. Wow.â
He laughs with her as she sets her head on his chest and they stay quiet for a while, letting their laughter die.
And thatâs when she notices heâs way too stiff.
âSomething wrong?â She asks moving her head up so she can look at him. âPercy. What happened?â Her eyes soften alongside her voice and her hand moves to cup his cheek, concerned.
He sighs. âThere was this kid⌠he had some condition, they didnât explain it right. Something on his lungs. I pulled him out alive, but the smoke had a terrible effect on him. Heâs in the hospital, but they didnât⌠They donât think heâs gonna make it.â
He doesnât meet her eyes as he tells the story, instead fixing his glare on the ceiling. She doesnât know what to say â there really isnât much to be said - so she just waits a little and lies down on his chest again.
âTell me about the other people that you saved.â
ââBethâŚâ
âJust tell me. I wanna know about them.â
She can feel he takes a deep breath as his chest expands a little.
âUh, well⌠the little boy has a sister. An older sister. She was still inside because she went back to- to save their cat, actually.â Percy explains with a chuckle and she laughs lightly with him.
âLook at that, weâre at six cats this month. Two more and youâll break your record, Jackson.â
He laughs again and starts stroking her hair. He loves what sheâs doing, loves how much she knows him.
âLooking forward to that.â
She smiles. âNow go on, the girl?â
âYeah, uh. I saved her â and the cat. Their parents were already outside, they were taking care of the boy, waiting for the paramedics. They were really grateful. The girl⌠she said she wanted to be a firefighter someday.â
Annabeth smiles, knowing how much it means to Percy when a kid says that to him, just as much as when a parent thanks him, and because she wants to and feels like he needs it, she raises her head again and kisses his lips. Itâs light and sweet, just a reminder that she is there even when things donât work like theyâre supposed to, and he kisses her back.
âYou know you are my hero, right?â She asks with a playful tone, but they both know she means it.
He grins. âYeah, well, youâre mine.â
She lies down again, listening to the calm beat of his heart, and asks him to continue. He tells her about the old lady, and the dog, and the unconscious guy on the highest floor of the building. His voice is quiet and it almost lures her to sleep, but she wants him to know sheâs there.
When she can no longer keep awake, she kisses his chest and murmurs âI love youâ. She can hear heâs calmer now, remembering all the lives heâs saved, all the people heâs helped.
He replies that he loves her, too, and in seconds sheâs asleep.
She doesnât hear his âthank youâ, but deep down she doesnât need to.
There isnât much Percy likes about pulling a night shift. Heâs been a firefighter for three years now, pulling nine hour shifts. Two day shifts, two nights, four rest days. Now he's headed home at half past seven on a Friday morning, more than ready to climb into bed and not get out again until Annabeth gets home from work, and then proceed to spend a rare weekend off with her. Itâs that thought which gives him just enough energy to take two steps at a time up to their apartment.
He fumbles with the keys, trying to be as quiet as he can when he opens the door and toes off his boots. The apartment is perfectly tidy, everything in itâs place down to the cushions on the couch, but Percy forgoes this as he shrugs off his jacket, unloops his belt, and pulls off his hoodie, depositing them all on the floor in his wake as he shuffles towards the bedroom. Annabeth will kill him, but at this point heâs too tired, really, to care.
Sheâs still in bed, all wrapped up in the comforter with one foot sticking out. He could never understand how she slept like that, he had to have his feet securely tucked underneath the covers, even if the rest of his body was exposed. He closed the door quietly and reached for the collar of his shirt in the same movement, tugging the item of clothing over his head. He shucks out of his pants next, and his underwear, and pulls on the clean pyjama bottoms and cotton t-shirt Annabeth has laid out for him.
And then he climbs into the delicious warmth that is his and Annabethâs bed and every ache and pain in his body collapses into the mattress, into the soft pillow and the softness of his girlfriendâs skin as he brushes her arm. She stirs then, mumbling nonsense as she slowly wakes up.
âMmph, hello.â
Percy smiles with his eyes closed shut, rolling over as she turns to face him, tucking herself underneath the comforter and up against him.
âHi.â
âTime is it?â Annabeth speaks in half sentences when sheâs tired, mumbled half-committed words. Sheâs grumpy sometimes, too, but he knows she missed him last night so she curls against him greedily.
âSeven forty-five.â
Annabethâs nose is pressed against his collarbone, her fingers inch around his waist pulling up his shirt and rubbing his skin and she rolls her hips, lining her body up with his. Sheâs so warm, and sleepy. It makes him want to sleep.
âThen you have fifteen minutes of cuddling.â She kisses his Adamâs apple. âMaybe twenty five.â
Percy laughs tiredly, and pulls her closer.
This. He doesnât mind this about his night shifts. Coming home to her. Even after heâs rolled over and made himself comfortable and sheâs curled around his back; even after she presses kisses to his shoulder and wriggles out from under the covers. Because she touches his hair before she goes with a promise of returning later.

âI needed a drink of water after my shower but I forgot that I opened the blinds to my balcony and you just saw me walk into my kitchen naked.â
because this needed to be done
* * *
Percy kind of loved living alone. It gave him all sorts of freedom. He could get home from work and order take-out three nights in a row and no one would judge him. He could sit in his pyjamas all day and play video games on his day off without someone nagging at him to get off his lazy ass. He could walk around the apartment butt naked and be reassured that he was the only person with a key.
This was precisely his train of thought one Saturday when he stepped out of the shower and realised he had neglected to grab a towel before going into the bathroom. With a heavy sigh, he shook his hair out and opened the bathroom door. Steam billowed out with him, clinging to his skin as he crossed the room and dissipating in the cool air of his apartment.
Instead of heading straight for his bedroom, PErcy took a detour to the kitchen to grab a glass of water and turn the coffee machine on. He stretched his arms above his head, linking his fingers together and groaning. His body ached from a long week of shifts at the fire station. Percy loved his job, even the saving-kittens-from-trees and giving-talks-to-middle-schoolers parts, but he sure did miss having regular weekends; this had to be his first one in at least a month.
He padded into the kitchen and pulled a glass from the cupboard and turns the tap on to fill it up with water. The sink was underneath a window which looked out across the street and gave him a view of the block of apartments directly opposite. That was the thing with Manhattan, Percy saw his neighbours all the time - all crammed on top of one another like they were - but he never spoke to them.
One particular neighbour Percy wished he could speak to was the girl who lived across the street from him. He often saw her curled up on the window seat with a book in her hands, eyes trained sharply on the page, hair draped over one shoulder or pulled up into a sloppy bun. More than once, theyâd made eye contact and tipped their coffee mugs awkwardly at one another. But other than that, Percy hadnât had any contact with her. They werenât in the same building to bump into each other in the elevator or picking up their mail.
As Percy looked up through the window this morning, hoping to see her, and he was met with exactly that. She was standing at her window with a mug of coffee and one hand over her mouth, those sharp eyes of hers drawn wide in shock and oh god.
Oh fuck. No, please no.
Blood rushed to Percyâs cheeks as he registered what heâd done. Before his shower, heâd opened the blinds of his glass balcony doors and heâd just walked across his apartment to his kitchen, passing that window and fuck. Sheâd have seen... everything.
Fuck.
He realised he was still standing there and she was stifling laughter behind that hand, so Percy did what any grown ass man would do and hid. He dropped to his knees, whacking his head on the side of the sink on his way down and cursing as he clutched at the lump already forming on his forehead.
âDammit!â
He forgot his was holding a glass of water and spilt it all over his bare crotch.
âGoddammit!â
Percy sprawled his legs out on the cold tile of his kitchen floor and let his head fall back against the cupboard behind him. He was such a disaster.
He sat there for a few minutes, wallowing in self-pity and already mourning the loss of her occasional smiles from across the street because surely she wasnât going to so much as glance through her window any more. He certainly knew he wouldn't be able to. Eventually, he got on his knees and peeked over the sink to see if she was still there, she wasnât, thankfully. Although not knowing where she was only made him more nervous. Percy sighed and grabbed a dish towel to cover his junk before pulled himself up off the kitchen floor and bolted to his bedroom.
In there, he shut the door behind him and found some clothes to put on.
âYouâre looking for Charles, dear?â
âNo-- no, thatâs not--â Annabeth tried, but the old lady was already tottering down the hall to find Charles, leaving Annabeth standing in the doorway of the strangerâs apartment. âNot who Iâm looking for.â
Annabeth sighed, wondering if she should just give up and go home. This was ridiculous, she was being weird and bordering on obsessive. She leaned against the doorframe and wondered where the old lady had got to, had she forgotten about her? Maybe if Annabeth just closed the door and backed awayâŚ
She stared at the closed door and tried to orientate herself. She was standing outside apartment 34, the fourth apartment across from the left which was definitely the right apartment. Except, wait. She hadnât factored in the basement-- shit, she was on the wrong floor.
Cursing herself, she made for the elevator and once inside, pressed the button for the fourth floor. She watched the doors close, tapping her foot as she waited for them to open again. When they did, she took a deep breath and strode right up to apartment 44, knocking on the door three times before she could talk herself out of it. She waited three seconds, five, ten. Okay, she was leaving, she was going home and never looking out her window again.
The door opened then, and Annabeth was met with a grey t-shirt being pulled down over a set of abs. She dragged her gaze up to the startled face of her across-the-street neighbour. Heat filled her cheeks as he gaped at her.
âEr...hi,â she said, giving him a small wave. Why the hell was she waving? He was standing three feet away.
âHello,â he replied slowly.
Annabeth tried for a smile. âSo, I came over to see if you were okay. It looked like you hit your head whenâŚâ
She trailed off, not feeling the need to reiterate what had happened. As she said it, he lifted a hand to his forehead, where, sure enough, a red lump had begun to surface. He cringed visibly and dropped his hand to his neck which was getting redder by the second.
âYeah, uh, no. Iâm fine,â he stammered. âI... you came over to check on me?â
Annabeth bit her lip. âYeah, I had to make sure you werenât lying naked and unconscious on your kitchen floor.â
âRight.â He choked out a laugh. âThat would be bad.â
âRight,â she agreed.
He was just standing there watching her with those damn eyes of his and all she could think about was the fact that sheâd seen him stark naked just five minutes ago. And okay, maybe sheâd been looking through her window for the past few months, hoping to see him. Especially when he came home from work in his uniform and yes, she was well aware that she was being creepy.
âSo,â he said, snapping her out of it, âwould it be polite or weird if I invited you in for breakfast?â
Annabeth looked up at him, a slow grin creeping across her face. âWell, Iâve already seen you naked today, so how much weirder can it get?â
His cheeks flamed with colour. âRight, yes you did.â He ducked his chin.
âIâd love to have breakfast,â she clarified.
He met her eyes and smiled tentatively, and her stomach did the tiniest flipflop. He stepped back to let her in and she walked past him, trying not to inhale his shower gel. She wondered if she would be able to make it through breakfast without the image of his naked body flashing through her mind again.
i have a hc that percy decides to be a firefighter, so he doesnt go to new rome, and neither does annabeth cus she's not a big fan of the roman way of doing stuff. is horrible to ignore what the book says, but what the book says is awful
i cannot express to you how much i love firefighter percy, like it's so perfect - he can control water, he has a ridiculous need to save everybody he comes across, he would look great in an FDNY t shirt. what's there to complain about?
also jess has written a pretty fantastic firefighter!percy smut fic so there's that too
i can't agree with them moving to rome, i'm sorry riordan. like, maybe for a little while, but i don't think they would settle there. it just doesn't feel right.
