New break tank package booster sets for fire fighting meet DIN 14462: 2023-07
 At the end of 2023 KSB launched a new generation of its HyaDuo break tank package booster sets for fire fighting on the market. The sets meet the revised DIN 14462: 2023-07 standard for fire-fighting systems and break tank package booster sets for wall hydrant systems. The extended standard contains a number of changes that majorly impacted the design details of the fully automatic break tank package booster set for fire fighting.
The redundancy, in particular, that is stipulated for the supply of fire-fighting water means that all control and measuring elements now have to be doubled or redundant. The HyaDuo 2 D FL and HyaDuo 2 D FL Compact sets also feature two inlet devices ensuring the hygienic separation of drinking water and fire-fighting water to EN 1717 type AB. The effective volume of the break tank is now 600 litres to compensate for any fluctuations in inflow rate and reliably supply the pumps with water for one minute. Newly designed suction elbows allow full use of the tank volume. A ball valve near the bottom of the tank enables the operator to regularly check the function of mains water supply. A window for fill level indication shows the water level at all times. To facilitate manoeuvring when installing the set, the hydraulic unit can be separated from the tank unit. The master switch is now outside the control cabinet as the new edition of DIN 14462 requires the entire place of installation to be protected against unauthorised access. In the event of fire, HyaDuo 2 D FL Compact supplies wall hydrant systems with up to 36 cubic metres of fire-fighting water per hour with only one duty pump. The sets have been developed for supplying fire-fighting water to protect multiple dwellings, residential and office buildings, multi-storey car parks and hospitals, for example. In the event of a lack of water, the new products from KSB now incorporate the option of either stopping the pumps or continuing operation. The default setting is for the pumps to stop if lack of water occurs. The operator can deactivate this function by removing a wire jumper, which means the pumps will keep running even in the event of a lack of water. The fully automatic break tank package booster set for fire fighting of the type series HyaDuo 2 D FL Compact is fitted with two fully redundant pumps, each of which has got its own power and control circuit. The newly developed Andritz pump controller (APC) is a flexible and individual control unit for interconnected pumps in sprinkler, wastewater, lifting, pressure boosting and fire extinguishing systems and in water supply networks. The APC features flexibility, enabling pump users to set it themselves via an intuitive configuration interface to suit the individual circumstances in the plant, quickly and without requiring specialized personnel. Operating modes and available sensors can be integrated into the system with just a few clicks. Freely adjustable control parameters also provide automatic and optimum adjustment to plant conditions, thus making a substantial contribution towards maintaining high operating reliability and thus also to optimizing the process. The APC also provides optimum duty by the pumps integrated into the system, ensuring that the plant operates efficiently and with the longest possible service life. Innovative remote solution
The APC is pre-programmed to the general conditions in the plant so that start-up and handling on site is fast, easy and possible without any specialized personnel or equipment and programming knowledge. The unit can be extended at any time by adding more pumps and functions, such as a remote monitoring concept or a connection to existing higher-level systems. By using a secure, remote interface – for example via mobile devices like tablets or smartphones – the operator can access the APC at any time and from anywhere in the world. Remote support and various updates implemented by Andritz staff can also be added to these IIoT functions at the customer’s request. In addition, the APC expansion package includes modules to monitor vibration and energy consumption, connections to various bus systems, as well as taking account of additional digital and analog input/output signals for connection to higher-level systems. In the standard design, the APC provides various functions like display, operation, notification, and control in accordance with the pre-defined control variables (pressure, head and flow rate) for up to six pumps. The control system switches the pumps on and off, replaces pumps for optimum distribution of use between the pumps, changes pumps over in the event of a fault, as well as providing the necessary protection functions like dry running protection, flow monitoring and anti-jamming.
