this design of @joehills took quite a few iterations (I left several of them on the page) since I decided to steal some ideas for what the fae are from @filibusterfrog 's amazing worldbuilding concepts for fae and archfey.
I would say this is based on the dogbane leaf beetle, but really, it only was a passing influence

One time he pretended to take a deep inhale on his cigar and instead he spit acid in a man’s face. It was insane.

Wanted to make a playable race for dnd based on @filibusterfrog's fiery folks in their post abt core classes as undead.
Presenting:
Soulfires
Left with lingering attachments to the world, Soulfires are created by those that feel driven to carry out final missions even after death.
Age: If their lingering attachments are not properly sorted, soulfires typically burn for about 5 years after their initial death, & particularly strong willed souls can last for up to 20 years.
Size: Soulfires tend to keep a similar physique to their living selves. Your size is Medium, but can work with your dm to be classified as Small.
Speed: Your walking speed is 30 ft. (25 ft if your character is small)
Ability Score Increase: Your Charisma score increases by 2, & your Wisdom score increases by 1.
Damage Resistance: You are resistant to fire damage
Light in the Dark: While in non-magical darkness, you project bright light in a 30 ft radius, & dim light for another 30 ft.
Fan the Flames: Once per rest, you can increase the strength of your flames to dangerous levels. When you use this feature, all creatures within a 10 ft radius of you must make a Dexterity Saving throw or take 2d8 damage. The DC of this Saving Throw equals 8+your Constitution modifier + your proficiency bonus. This damage increases by 1d8 when you reach 6th, 11th, & 16th level. When you use this feature, you take damage equal to the first two d8's you roll.
Languages: Common & 1 standard language based on your character's history.
Building off an existing character: Being driven by final wills, it's possible for a character to be reborn as a Soulfire. Discuss with your dm about how your character undergoes this process. Whether it be that they simply burst back to life or are bound by a magical process. Do NOT just Deus Ex your party if your character dies (keep at least your DM in the loop). When your character is reborn as a Soulfire, they lose all ability score increases & racial features from their past life, excluding language, size, & speed(s).
