My newbie mistakes, past and present
8/3/16 For any newbs who haven't taken the bus, here are a few things to be aware of: 1) One annoying thing about busing in LA is that there are many different bus systems. Metro is the biggest and covers a lot of ground but then you get Culver City's green bus, Santa Monica's Big Blue Bus, Pasadena ART, Glendale Beeline, Foothill Transit, and LADOT which makes no sense to me as an entity, to name a few. Most of these other systems will "take TAP cards." That just means they'll take stored value on a tap card. As a monthly pass holder, this makes me very sad as it would be much better if I could pay for everything with the monthly pass. Just saying. I use google maps to get around, it has info on the different systems. 2) Be aware of which bus you're taking as different systems charge different fares. If paying in cash, have exact change! If paying with a tap card, make sure you have loaded your card with the right kind of stored value. 3) Don't assume the bus will stop. Ever. The first time I tried to take the bus on my own back in college, I went to a foothill transit stop for a bus that came every forty minutes. I parked myself on the bench and waited. I saw the bus approach (!), stayed seated on the bench, aaaaand watched it pass me right by. Forty minutes later, when the next bus came, you better believe I was standing next to the bus stop sign and waving frantically to the driver. Stand by the bus stop sign once the bus is approaching to make it clear to the driver you want to be picked up! Frantic waving is usually unnecessary. 4) Really, don't assume the bus will stop. Ever! The biggest mistake I see people make is to assume the bus stops at every stop. If a driver approaches a stop and no one is getting on or off, they'll just keep driving. So when you get on the bus, look for a yellow cable, yellow strip, or red button. Depending on the bus, you'll need to pull or press these when your stop is coming up to let the driver know that you want to leave! The other day, I rode on a Culver City bus and didn't see the button or cable I was used to on Metro. I started to panic until I noticed the strip that ran down the sides of the bus and the small sign indicating that you tap this to stop dummy. 5) Don't be scared. When I talk to non-bus people, they always say taking the bus or Metro is really intimidating. And it can be, until you figure out the basics! In my experience, people are nice and helpful. Sometimes I still get turned around at Union Station. I don't go through on a regular basis, and I get confused and which train goes which direction on either side of the platform. But I've always been able to just ask someone, and they have always very patiently confirmed the obvious and sent me on my way. Also, on buses, ask the driver. Again 99% of the time, they are knowledgable and willing to help!
