I love playing character creation, so I need a palette with hex codes on hand. These are not the exact colors tho, the values have been messed with a little. Whichever tint that fits the vibe.

Mostly I color-picked from their portrait or in-game model, except Dimitri, with whom I used Kurahana's official art instead.

I also just love lining everyone up tgt :))) It makes such a cool visual, like an elite squad assembling to carry out a special mission, or the character build menu in a jrpg :)))))))))))

And you can see the similarities among their clothes: high collar, fur trim, gloves, minimal decorations, dull colors, no exposed skin from the feet to the neck (except only Mercedes who has neither fur or gloves). It's fun that, as their leader, Dimitri has the biggest patch of fur :))))))

A follow-up to an earlier post =))

Last time I struggled w Sylvain cuz of his dark teal situation, this time I struggled w Claude.

The concept art describes his color as being from "bright/sparkling gold". And that image is just, hard to nail down... Without the magic of color theory, his uniform cloak is too limey and his war phase cape is too grey...

So anw Claude is whatever you think "bright gold" looks like :"))

Fashion-wise, now that I've lined everyone up, the Deer probably have the most decorative ornamental bs out of all the houses =))))))))) Not even the proud Adrestian have so many things going on.

With such a diverse cast, there isn't one clear trend in style. But the Leicester kids do lean more toward Adrestia's flowy aristocratic air & them cleavages.

I don't see ppl pointing this out much but the yearly weather cycle in the world of 3Houses is based more on that of Japan than the typical four seasons in the West. So I will list them out here cuz I love the worldbuilding of 3H :3 This will be based on the narration for each month.

An interesting thing I want to note is that the numbers used to help us identify which Imperial Moon correlates to which Gregorian Month (like Great Tree Moon - 4 -> Apr or Ethereal Moon - 12 -> Dec) were, in-universe, actually from an old Fódlani calendar that predates the Imperial calendar :> You can think of it like how many countries still use both the Gregorian calendar and a lunar calendar.

The way the Imperial calendar was imposed in Fódlan is pretty much a direct reference to our modern calendar.

But I digress... This is supposed to be about the Seasons of Fódlan🍃🌹🌨️🌕

🌱 Spring starts in Great Tree Moon (Apr). It is also the start of a new Imperial year, with the Adrestian Empire Founding Day being on the 1st.

"The icy winds of the Oghma Mountains have begun to scatter, and the verdant fields once again spring to life across Fódlan, heralding the start of a new year. As they celebrate the dawning year, the people pray that they may realize their full potential, just as a tiny sprout hopes to one day grow into a great tree."

🌧️ Summer, aka the rainy season, starts in Garland Moon (Jun).

"When the warm winds blow from the from the sea to the south of Adrestia, residents of Fódlan know that the rainy season is upon them. Before the heavy rains take their toll, the young women hurry to pick the last of the white roses. The ivory buds are woven into garlands and given as gifts to close friends or potential lovers."

🌾 Fall starts in Horsebow Moon (Sep).

"As cold air begins to creep in from the north of Faerghus, Fódlan welcomes the riches of fall. The women spend their days reaping the golden fields, gratefully embracing the bounty the goddess has once again provided. The men venture into the wild with horsebows and empty sacks ready to be filled with game."

❄️ Winter starts in Red Wolf Moon (Nov).

"Hoarfrost now graces treetops and open fields alike, and an icy chill blown in from the north of Faerghus blankets the land. All of Fódlan's creatures begin to settle in for a long winter. The setting sun bathes the full winter coat of every wolf in a foreboding scarlet glow. Hunters can now spread the word that the red wolves are back on the prowl."

In summary:

🌟 One particular detail the narrations deemed important to point out is the appearance of the Blue Sea Star, aka the Goddess' Home, aka the star Sirius, which is behind two very important names in this game, "Sothis" and "Seiros".

The Blue Sea Star can be seen in Fódlan's sky from Blue Sea Moon (Jul) till Red Wolf Moon (Nov). This somewhat matches our Sirius being a winter star in the Northern Hemisphere.

Ethereal Moon: "... the Blue Sea Star has gone back into hiding..."

🌬️ Another piece of info given be the narrations is that the weather system in Fódlan is maintained by warm, humid wind from the South in Summer and cold wind from the North in Winter.

Garlands: "When the warm winds blow from the from the sea to the south of Adrestia, residents of Fódlan know that the rainy season is upon them..."

Horsebow: "... cold air begins to creep in from the north of Faerghus..."

Red Wolf: "... an icy chill blown in from the north of Faerghus blankets the land..."

The Winds of Winter (heh) seem to be quite strong over this continent, to the point where even Southern Adrestia & the sea beyond are chilled. Their effect can be felt for 7 months of the year, with 5 months suffering from frosts & active snowfall.

I'd like to hazard a guess that Fódlan suffers from the same phenomenon that happens to Japan. The dry, cold air from Siberia picks up moisture when it crosses the Sea of Japan, dumping a fk ton of snow onto Northern Japan (this country has 3 of the snowiest cities in the world!).

Similarly, the North of Fódlan where the winter winds blow from is also surrounded by a sea.

Winter in Faerghus must be such a struggle... Although the land there is actually blessed with minerals and oils :))) so maybe what they need to turn their fortune around is a few industrial revolutions :)))))))))

But no I need to stop there. I think too hard and now I'm imagining capitalism in my favorite medieval fantasy. Nope nope nope 🙂‍↔️

🔎🗓️ Edit: some other fun details I neglected to mention

1) Wyvern is a migratory species which flies to the South in, you guessed it, Wyvern Moon (Oct). Did that have any impact on Fódlani taming them? Does Almyran wyverns migrate? Or is the climate there much warmer and they belong to a different species from Fódlani wyverns?

2) The main grain of Fódlan grows in ~4 months. Seeds are sown in Harpstring Moon (May), and the harvest is in Horsebow Moon (Sep). That seems to be the average for spring wheat? And, well, the rest of their year is winter :)))

Seriously, winter in Fódlan is way too long 🫠

In chapter 5 Verdant Rain Moon (Aug), Annette tells you to prepare a coat bc Faerghus is chilly even at that time of the year (end of Fódlan summer), and it rains a lot. The Tailtean Plains map, which is in Blaiddyd territory, is also raining

Yk, Faerghus being a perpetually cold & humid hellscape is the kinda condition I imagine Northwestern Europe (the UK, the Netherlands, Denmark) suffer from :Đ No wonder the Faerghan are depressed

I was pondering color-coding the events, like whether they directly involved a member of the Class of 1180, or related to their family, or were just background happenstances. But eh? I'm afraid it will look even more messy?

The entirety of the city must have been built on a hill? Unlike the other generic Kingdom maps with tall stone mountains, this map only shows some low peaks in its Eastern corner.

Fhirdiad has several layers separated by walls and stairs, leading up to the Castle—the tallest feature in that area.

There's a water moat surrounding the inner city and the Castle.

The Castle ground seems to be as big as the inner city.

Dig a little into 3H's lore and you would know that the Crest of House Blaiddyd came from the Grim Dragon.

But wtf does Grim even mean here???

So I went to check what the Japanese name for this dragon is, armed w my very crusty long-time-no-use Japanese & my mother tongue also having borrowed a sht ton of words from middle Chinese, which is extremely useful for grasping kanji :)))

惨 denotes a state of destruction & tragedy.

Our language has several common words w this element, like:

"thảm khốc" (disastrous & devastating), used in jap as 惨酷 sankoku or mugokoku;

"thảm sát" (massacre), used in jap as 惨殺 zansatsu;

"thảm hại" (pathetic)

"thảm kịch" (a tragic event)

Areadbhar's signature combat art Atrocity is 無惨 muzan in Japanese. Yep, the exact same kanji and reading as the villain of KnY :)))

I think you can get the general vibe here.

And thus, I have a little personal headcanon about the power from the blood of the Grim Dragon.

The Crest of Blaiddyd is far from the only one that raises combat art dmg. But it's the only one that x2 Attack, instead of +5 on Might (even the Crest of Flames only +5 Might), in exchange for x2 durability cost.

What if, the Crest doesn't just give you more strength, it's strength specifically to destroy, not only physically, but also mentally.

Dimitri loves as fiercely as he hates, to the detriment of both himself and others.

But a Crest does not define a person, and eventually our boy learnt that he could be more than just a weapon at others' will.

Random tidbits about Crests:

1) In some tarot sets, the major arcana Strength & Justice are swapped.

3H references this by giving Dimitri a big personal arc of "what does being just mean?" while also linking the Crest of Cichol to strength.

Legend has it that Saint Cichol bore this Crest. A symbol of strength and the land.

2) Dimitri's nickname of the "Tempest King" - 「嵐王」 - uses the same kanji as the Storm Dragon, who bore the Crest of the Beast.

On that note, Faeghast on ytb has a really cool theory that this Crest might somehow give better mental fortitude, considering Maurice & Edelgard are the only ones (semi-)conscious and can talk in their Demonic Beast form.

Also, I have no idea why the *Storm* Dragon for the Crest of the Beast, what is the association here (⁠￣⁠ヘ⁠￣⁠;)ゞ?

The Crest of Charon, which is hypothesized to bring heavy rain when the bearer least wants it (Lysithea & Catherine C-support), came from the Lightning Dragon instead.

3) Other dragons w funky name and their kanji

The "Crusher" Dragon was translated quite literally. 砕 really does just mean "to break sth into small jagged pieces"

If you are an InuYasha fan like me, this is the word used in 鉄砕牙Tetsusaiga - Thiết Toái Nha :)))

萌 is probably closer to "to sprout" than "to bloom", but "bloom" is not wrong either.

But taken more abstractly, 萌 means "nascent", "to begin to emerge", "to be near to revealing itself".

賢 is used a lot in Confucianism to mean "virtuous and wise". 賢い kashikoi means "smart".

I guess the "Craft" here is as in "crafty"?

This is another direct translation. 劫 or 劫波 is the phonetic translation of the Sanskrit word "kalpa" into Chinese, sometimes translated as "aeon" in English. It describes one complete loop of birth-death-rebirth. The timeframe could be unfathomably long like the creation & destruction of the cosmos, or one simple lifespan of a person.

I think you can see a connection to the circular shape of the Crest of Goneril, as well as to the arcana Wheel of Fortune.

裂 means "to tear", "to cut apart".

護 means "to protect", as opposed to the Shield Dragon (Crest of Fraldarius) using 盾, which is the literal noun "a shield".

The Flame Dragon shares its kanji with the Crest of Flames - 「炎の紋章」 - which slightly bugs me... But then again 炎 is just a really normal common word for "flame".

As I've said in part 1 of this Comparison series, Dimitri lacked the ulterior motives of Edelgard (preparing for war) & Claude (investigating the Church) so he simply told you the legend of Saint Seiros. Not that he didn't have a motive (avenging those who died in the Tragedy), he just had no intention of involving the Professor in his plan.
