Presenting the "Gigachad" of Escaflowne, Miguel La Variel is one of the team of youths called "the Dragonslayers" who pilot Alseides Guymelefs for Zaibach. Possibly the bravest male character in Escaflowne, Miguel is often depicted as Dilandau's long-suffering paramour in fan fiction and fan art.
Art credit to Fayrinn on Tumblr for the picture of Miguel, there weren't any suitable official pics of him for this project. My composition features the "Strawberry Thief" print by William Morris along with other digital edits.

@fayrinfernoās comments: (Radās original Ebr commentary)
Haha, @radical-rad1986, unfortunately, I could not participate, but your notes made me wanna rewatch myself. Just a few notes here and there where I could catch what was meant without watching.
:D Yeah I was hoping for more people but it was abruptly planned too; glad for the people who could participate!Ā
Yes the arrow tip seems to be an energist, no idea why, also do not ask me why some energists are soft (like the one you can put your hand through on Esca) and some are apparently hard enough to be used against dragonscale. Maybe the āenergist oreā is soft and the product, energist, is hard?
SO MANY UNANSWERED QUESTIONS! It might have something to do with the reaction of energist coming in contact with the guymelefās holder-thing??? I just found it interesting that the arrow appeared to be entergist-tipped!
Itās MOERO! A rude command form of moeru, to burn :D (laughs in student Japanese at the thought of Dilandau screaming āMOETE KUDASAI!ā maniacally)
Ah so I did spell it wrong!
Dryden says: āThere is [a way]⦠on Ispano made guymelefā¦ā and he just activates the mechanism. Allen asks what he just did and he said he ācalled them (the Ispano)ā. So no, no phoning home. There also was a way of putting it differently (the subs got it right), but it seems like the dub tried to give Dryden some extra swag or sth???
That makes SO MUCh more sense! I guess the Ocean Group just thoughĀ āphone homeā sounded cool.... >.>
Hitomiās grandma is most probably not Kanzaki, Yuri is the mother of Hitomiās mom. I believe Hitomiās parents are married, which would make Hitomiās dad (and his side of the family) Kanzaki.
Yeah Iām sure sheās not a Kanzaki but as we have no other last names... it has a pleasant ring to it too.
I believe Esca is older than Naruto, but the inspiration from some historical Japanese fighting gear is possible for both.
Yeah I was reaching but it was funny!! :DDD
I thought the same, Freid worships what most of Gaea considers demons. It seemed Atlanteans and Freid were on good terms when they placed the power spot there? But the other nations didnāt know them and started fearing them. I also think that the rest of known nations do not hate them like, attacking them on sight or whatever. They just think of them as too powerful and dangerous and do not want to fall under their influence. Maybe they pity Freid for being āenslavedā by Atlanteans, but they do not shun them for their beliefs. As I said once before, the countries seem to be chill with religions other than their own.
Oh I totally love that the nations of Gaea seem to not have anti-relglion crap going on, even if they do have racism with the beastmen, at least in some places a little bit. I donāt see it but I swear that the Compendiumās Chronology had Freid being founded early-ish and being anĀ āoldā country. Like it built up around the Power Spot. Maybe Iām making it up or remembering someoneās headcanon. Maybe Atlantis and Atlanteans are more a myth/forgotten and Draconians are more real, if rare? But yeah itās prolly more Fanelila thatās afraid of the Daconians, NOT to belittle them/it but they are a little behind on the times... And yeah, if Freid isnāt a ranting/weird country and veryĀ functional, whoās to bring on the religion debate?
Aww the Fanel family flying courses!
:DDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDD
And Iām happy someone adopted my āMaMaā lol.
Oh I thought that was Konstantyaās! Whoop my bad!
@fayrinn ( @fayrinferno ?Ā I forget which is your main account, so Iām covering my bases.Ā ^^)
Haha, Iām grabbing straws at Gaddesā background, but he is fun. Military background? Care to elaborate?
Well, Iāll admit I donāt have a solid headcanon for him, myself, haha.Ā But I always kind of liked the idea that he was one of the very few of the Castelo/Crusade crew besides Allen (perhaps the only other one besides Allen?) who had some formal military experience, and again, one of the very few (if not the only one) who didnāt have a criminal history of some sort.Ā (Though I can see him being involved in some very low-key stuff, like gambling and whatnot.)
I also headcanon that he comes from a big family, and is somewhere in the middle, age-wise.Ā Not the youngest, as he seems to be good at shouting orders and keeping the rest of the guys in shape (experience from when heād have to keep his younger siblings in line, donātcha know ;D), but also not the oldest, as he probably would have inherited something (if only the family business or something like that), and thus wouldnāt have had to go seek his own fortune in the army.Ā (Or rather, his own steady job with decent pay in the army, haha.)Ā He definitely has at least one older sister (probably the oldest of all the children, actually), and probably a mother thatās a force to be reckoned with, too, judging by how he seems to be totes cool and just generally nonpatronizing when it comes to women.Ā Unlike some characters, *cough*Allen*cough* ;pĀ Basically, I just see him as coming from a very decent, working-class family.

On the topic of Folken's hair; I fanwanked he is some sort of albino or lacks pigmentation (a genetic strain caused by his mixed heritage?). My mind just connected the dots of him being pale, having red eyes and his hair being a really bright version of his parents'. Yes, they are all black haired, but then Varie's hair is accented by green, Van's (and I guess Goau's) by blue. Personally, I think he takes more after Varie. It just bothers me that all the known albinos would meet on Vione FSR .
YES, FANWANK WITH ME.
Speaking for myself, I settled on the headcanon that his hair is actually white, and the blue/green tint is simply anime/animation convention to help distinguish him from Dilandau.Ā That explanation still requires the weirdness of his heritage to come into play, but, like, at least white is a color hair can naturally be, you know?Ā But the albino theory is interestingā¦Ā I did always find it curious that his skin was so pale, given that Van appears to have a rather swarthy complexion though maybe he just doesnāt have a lot of time for sunbathing in Zaibach, pfft.
On a kind of related note, I once came across an old fansite that had some alternative character designs from one of the art books, and apparently at one point, Folken was planned to be blond and tan.Ā (Gaddes, tooāthough he obviously got to keep the swarthiness, hah.)
