a few of my favorite old Italian words + old Hollywood starsÂ
7,18 x
so because i’m a doof who reblogged the “i’m not from the u.s.” questions post without tagging to let people know i was only reblogging for my non-u.s. followers and not for me i may have caused some confusion lmao but me and @ohthathurt cleared it up and i decided i’m still answering because these two questions had to do with language/dialect and, being black in america, i do technically also speak a different dialect than the standard (in addition to the standard) so.
18 - do you speak with a dialect of your native language? - yes, aave (african american vernacular english, also known as ebonics, a combo of ebony + phonics)Â
7 - three words from your native language that you like the most? - just gonna replace the word “language” here with “dialect” since that’s what more applies to me in this instance, but as y’all know i’m also super indecisive so this is probably gonna end up being a whole list (also some of these might be words everybody else knows/uses that just have slightly different meanings in the black community which i’ll prob give explanations for if the meaning’s not clear) but i would have to say my fave words/phrases are:Â
gurl bye/boy bye
swerve [bitch] - the bitch is optional lol
chill
nah
wild/extra/oc - oc stands for out of control btw, not sure if that’s dc-specific (as in washington, dc where I live and am from) or not but *shrugs*
crush - you ate or are about to eat something really fast cause you’re so damn hungry
finna - going to/about to do something (e.g. i’m finna go crush this kale salad lol; pretty sure this comes from a truncated version of the old southern phrase "fixing to go [do something]")
moe - pretty sure this one’s also dc-specific and there’s no good way to explain it, it’s just something used to refer to anything in general/end a sentence with, kind of like how son or young or cuz is used in other regions; i mostly use it in anger outrage (e.g. what you doing, moe??!! or chill, moe!), but it can really be used for anything (what’s up, moe or i need to go to sleep, moe lol)
you good - usually used to get someone to go away/leave you alone or shoo someone away which seems kind of paradoxical but it’s all in the way it’s said (e.g. you good, brah; nah, you good; might also include shooing hand motions or the side eye lol)
this my jam/that’s my jam - used mostly for music obvi but can also refer to pretty much anything you like (oh you got turkey pepperoni pizza? that’s my jam!)
the crew - a solid group of friends, basically a synonym to squad (which got way over used and ruined by white people but what else is new *long suffering sigh and eye roll*)
salty - still love this one, but also ^^see parenthesis above^^
[insert emotion/state of being here]boy - e.g. sadboy, madboy, tiredboy, wildboy…idk how to explain this it just makes things funnier
guh - another dc thing although it’s kind of old now and nobody really uses it anymore but it was basically synonymous with salty (e.g. oh her bf just broke up with her? she guh)
as a mug/like a mug - another dc thing (i think?) just a way of emphasizing things (e.g. he’s tall as a mug - not meant literally but just say he’s really tall or this/that is really whatever, etc.)
see, what had happened was… - great way to start a story lol (e.g. see, what had happened was…i started typing this list and then couldn’t stop and now i’m here with this ridiculously long post that nobody asked for, sorry @ohthathurt)
me @me:
i don’t know, nicki, i don’t know…send halp

Quotes from Knights of the Old Republic II: The Sith Lords (2004) that altered my brain chemistry:
You see the war, the true war, has never been one waged by droids, or warships or soliders. They are but crude matter, obstacles against which we test ourselves. The true war is waged in the hearts of all living things, against our natures, light or dark. That is what shapes the galaxy, not these creatures of man. You are the battleground. And if you fall, the death of the Republic will be such a quiet thing, a whisper that shall herald the darkness to come. [Kreia]
It is like a cloud, a mist that drifts from living creature to creature, set in motion by currents and eddies. It is the eye of the storm, te passions of all living things turned to energy, into a chorus. It is the rising swell at the end of life, the promise of new territories and new blood, the call of new mysteries in the dark. [Kreia on the Force]
I would die first, and glady, to preserve you, untouched, unharmed. Now that I have found you, I cannot sacrifice what I have found. [Visas Marr]
If you're ever fighting someone who has the power over your mind, whether light or dark, play pazaak. Start listing hyperspace routes. Recite engine sequencers. And when they try to use their powers on you, suddenly it's not as easy as they thought. Because you'll be right here with me, playing pazaak, where they can't reach you... [Atton]
Do you wonder where she wanders now, Mandalore? Why she gave you your orders, then abandoned you at the edge of the galaxy? [Kreia, to Mandalore]
Mira: When the galaxy takes something from me, I want the power to let go... and I want the power to heal the echo when it's gone. Exile: < One can live their whole life with such echoes, Mira. But I can teach you to accept them. > Mira: That sounds alright, from where I'm standing.
The difference between a fall and a sacrifice is sometimes difficult, but I feel that Revan understood that difference, more than anyone knew. The galaxy would have fallen if Revan had not gone to war. [Kreia]
Revan was power. It was like staring at the heart of the Force. [Kreia]
Vrook: You were deafened Kreia: At last...you could hear Kavar: You were broken Kreia: You were whole Zez-Kai Ell: You were blinded Kreia: And at last...you saw.
It has taken time for me to return here, I lost my way, but I've been stronger for the journey. What happens now shall not be done out of hate, or revenge, but for the sake of all life. And I ask you, finally, to forgive me. This body is a prison no longer. [Visas Marr]
Perhaps you were expecting some surprise, fro me to reveal a secret that had eluded you, somethng that would change your perspective of events, shake you to your core. There is no great revelation, no great secret. There is only you. [Kreia]
[ID: My mouth hasn't shut up about you since you kissed it. The idea that you may kiss it again is stuck in my brain, which hasn't stopped thinking about you since, well, before any kiss. And now the prospect of those kisses seems to wind me like when you slip on the stairs and one of the steps hits you in the middle of th back. The notion of them continuing for what is traditionally terrifying forever excited excites me to an unfamiliar degree.
Alex Turner's love letter to Alexa Chung]
Look, it’s spring. And last year’s loose dust has turned into this soft willingness. The wind-flowers have come up trembling, slowly the brackens are up-lifting their curvaceous and pale bodies. The thrushes have come home, none less than filled with mystery, sorrow, happiness, music, ambition.
And I am walking out into all of this with nowhere to go and no task undertaken but to turn the pages of this beautiful world over and over, in the world of my mind.
* * * Therefore, dark past, I’m about to do it. I’m about to forgive you
for everything.
- Mary Oliver, "A Settlement", from What Doe We Know, Poems and Prose Poems
🕊 I love coming back to this poem at the beginning of a new year. Although not Spring, I love the theme of starting anew and drawing a line over my past grief, forgiving it and sitting comfortably with it as I begin the next chapter in this beautiful world. Happy New Year.
