This story is truly one of the most unique fics I have ever read! It is an absolute masterclass in temporal storytelling where one point of view moves forward in time while the other moves backwards...
In this fic Ilya and Shane spend four months playing hockey in Switzerland during an NHL lockout, suddenly sharing not only a hockey team but also a house, routines, a life. And then abruptly need to return to their separate realities.
Already while reading I knew that I absolutely wanted to bind this story and immediately envisioned a Switzerland-focused cover design. Which was further inspired by the Swiss flag mug that Shane remembers as one of the things he collected while living in Zürich.
And then luckily I stumbled across the absolutely gorgeous and special art that @isolabellz created for the fic - look at those Zürich skyline vibes and the whole NYE scene comic, I mean.... Thank you so, so much for letting me use your pieces!
I really like that not having a Cricut or the option to print on canvas always challenges me to get creative with my covers - this time I chose to use stickers for the title which mirror the block font of the typeset and the cutout made it possible to still show the art on the cover.
Anon author, wherever you are - thank you for this absolute masterpiece that will stay with me for a long time!! [and also thank you for inspiring me to get out of my binding hibernation and motivating me to make my second ever typeset]
As always, bound for personal use only - keep fanfiction free!

Only five distinct ones this year, due to the move. But! I tried two new styles. I gave the chevron endband a go (bottom left) and also did a couple of true double cores (two on the bottom right). I think those ones turned out pretty well. I used a 0.5 mm plastic cord for the secondary core, which made it about the same size as the wrapped threads. I think it kept the end result from overwhelming the book.
Happy holidays & a wonderful new year to everyone!
Prowl was the second born creation of the King. He had always known that he was going to bond to secure an alliance for Praxus.
It was a role that was easier to accept before he had fallen in love with his best friend, a mech he never should have met in the first place.
Fandom: Transformers
Relationship: Jazz/Prowl
Rating: Explicit
Bodice ripper JazzProwl!! Very spicy with a large focus on non-penetrative interface with a plot that snuck in and made me want to kick Sentinel's ass. Need I say anything else to get some more love and attention onto this fic?
Usual spiel about construction and typesetting below with more pics.
I decided to go with a very simple white and blue color scheme, one, because it just felt very classy, and two, because it felt very bride-ish, which is Prowl's role in the story.
Tried out a new material for this bind: Neenah Paper's kivar 7 in the kidskin texture. It's very... interesting to work with? It's almost like a slightly more supple cardstock and fought me while gluing it down. It's definitely very durable though! I was able to wipe off some glue I accidentally got off the cover very easily which give me confidence it should stay that unblemished white for a while to come.
For the endpapers I made paste paper using the pearlescent paint I used for the edges.
There was a bit of a learning curve to using pearlescent paint on the edges of the book. I think maybe the pigment just isn't as fine as it is with my metallic paints because the shimmer would just hop right off if I waited after painting for the edges to completely dry before opening. Instead I had to paint, wait a minute for it to not be completely wet, and then fan the pages open. Worth it though for how pretty the edges look in the light!
The headbands were made by wrapping the cover material around hemp cord.
For typesetting, I used three fonts: Rosarivo for the body, WeddingDay Personal Use for the title page and dropcaps, and Wingdings for the little diamond used for line breaks.
For the chapter openings, I really loved how the fic opened up in Prowl's crystal garden and so I wanted to have some sort of gem/mineral for each opening based off of either it being mentioned in that chapter, vibes, or what the gem allegedly means. I actually made a little list while I was working, but ya know, past Froggie is not always the most coherent so it may not make the most sense. I'll just copy and paste it below. As a bonus it also acts as image credits!
Ch5: https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Hematite_(Cavradi_Gorge,Switzerland)_4.jpg (grounding, protection, stability which prowl needs)
Ch6: https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Tourmaline%26_aquamarine_J1.jpg (tourmaline found in garden; aqua allegedly calm, centered, relaxed but alert state with balanced energy.
Ch7: https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Pearl-freshwater_hg.jpg (not a gem, but first chapter with Prowl in Pearlex finish)
Ch9: https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Dumortierite-quartz_(Brazil)4.jpg (gain insight, jazz gives prowl info on suitors)
Ch10: https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Jaspe_Orbiculaire_de_Madagascar_1.jpg (malachite can be very toxic if not handled with care. Prime is toxic af here, plus kind of meaty texture is offputting like the end of chapter)
Ch11: https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Scol%C3%A9cite.jpg (peace and harmony, which prowl needs, but also spiky and a little imposing, like the situation they're in)
Ch12: https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Labrador(spektrolit)-_Ylamaa,_Finlandia..jpg (lazutherite not a real crystal, so chose a gem with a similar name)
Ch14: https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Aragonite-_Pantoja,_Toledo,_Castile-La_Mancha,_Spain.jpg (came up when I looked up stones for new beginnings)
I finally finished binding Nature and Nurture by @earlgreytea68, such a beautiful Johnlock fic that I’ve loved for years.
This was honestly a tricky one. I wanted to do something delicate and nature-inspired, so I made a little window on the cover with translucent paper to hold some dried flowers... which turned out beautiful eventually, but not before I messed it up three times and accidentally sliced into the back of the text block 😅 Worth it though.
The design is inspired by the GORGEOUS bind by wilddaisies_bindery on ig and also some bookmarks i made ages ago and that look so pretty with this bind.
The title, author, and AO3 logo are all handwritten with paint markers, and I used sea photographs from Canva as endpapers.
I’m so happy with how it turned out and I'm so glad to finally give this fic a physical form after loving it for years.
Thank you so much to the author for letting me bind this beauty and I hope you like how it turned out!

This AMAZING FIC OF ALL FICS is one of the reasons I had been pushing for YEARS to get into my uni bookbinding course in 2018! Me and @smoresmew fangirled SO HARD reading this fic back in the day! It needed to be in physical form so that we could beholden it Simba style like the Holy Grail of Fandom it is!!!😂
Atlas by distractedKat is a MUST read on any Star Trek Day for sure!!!
Forty books later, I've made another set of this fanfic by @theaguanzon, which does the best job of capturing how it felt to be 13 and reading Star Wars books in the 2000s. This set is a collaboration between myself and @selunchen, who did an amazing job illustrating the covers!
(The covers are inspired by an iconic Star Wars teaser poster. Do you know which one?)
This bind incorporates all the new techniques I've picked up over 2.5 years in this hobby. I foiled the line art on veg tan goat leather from Siegel, and there are Crepaldi endpapers and bookmark charms from @afterblossom.
The maps are based on Legends maps designed by Dan Wallace, Jason Fry, Chris Barbieri, and James Luceno. I revamped the typeset and painted the edges with a galaxy splatter pattern, and this bind is also rounded and backed.
This year as part of @renegadeguild’s event for FanFic Writers Appreciation Day (FFWAD), I had the honor of binding @isnt-it-pretty‘s fic “Fingernails The Colour of Rust” with art by @pigeon-noises! Both of them received a bound copy of the work, shown below :)
You can view Pigeon’s beautiful art Here and Here!
An Archive of Our Own, a project of the
Organization for Transformative Works
This project was super fun and I learned a lot along the way, more photos and description below the cut :)
This project saw a lot of late nights battling the printer, but equally as many nights excitedly experimenting with fonts and designs and layouts. The end design featured lineart tracings of the in-game Scarab and Nilopata Lotus materials, and in total is 312 pages long (284 of which are the fic itself). Making the case was by far the most challenging part of this process - using a foil quill was especially fun to learn, I owe so much to the Renegade binderary presenters. Unfortunately, the dust jacket would not print to size so it’s a bit small, but overall I think the books came out really great!
Thank you again to @isnt-it-pretty and @pigeon-noises, your works are so beautiful and I’m so grateful to have been able to make these books for you!
