fandom advent calendar! day five: someone who hates the "christmas season"
-ao3-
âDonât be such a Grinch, Tahani.â Eleanor says, arms crossed, stare hard and a knitted red-and-green monstrosity clenched in her hands.
âExcuse me?â Tahaniâs voice rises in pitch as she gasps in offense, hand going to her chest and drawing Eleanorâs eye to the low cut neckline of her dress.
âA Grinch. A Scrooge. A holiday curmudgeon. She who hates Christmas.â Eleanor lists off counting them down on her fingers theatrically as she does so.
âI know who Grinch is, thank you! And I am not that⌠that⌠ugly green creature.â Tahani says, arms flying around to emphasize her point. âI adore Christmas. My Christmas parties are the events of the year. I once raised 3 trillion dollars at my Winter Season Charity Gala. It was attended by my good friend Emma Thompson and-â
âThen you shouldnât have any problem wearing this in the name of holiday spirit and keeping our covers.â Eleanor smiles sharply and once more extends the sweater at Tahani. And Tahani once more leans back as if sheâs being offered lice.
Honestly saying the sweater looks like a Christmas tree threw up on it and made a womanâs portrait from the vomit would be a compliment, but if Eleanorâs being forced to wear one with a deranged clown in a Santa costume then sheâs taking everyone else down with her.
Eleanor is almost impressed with Vickiâs new play at torturing them.
Showing up at Eleanor and Chidiâs house, with big fat crocodile tears running down her face and crying about how no one else wanted to be wearing the holiday sweaters sheâd knitted for the occasion was pretty inspired. Michael was extra scornful, which sheâs noticed happens when he wishes heâd have come up with it himself in one of his 802 previous attempts.
So, unfortunately, what the âEleanor-who-thinks-sheâs-in-heaven-by-mistake-and-must-pretend-to-be-a-good-person-and-totally-doesnât-at-all-know-this-is-actually-the-bad-placeâ was supposed to do was grit her teeth and fold with a pained smile.
On the bright side maybe there will finally be something that doesnât make Tahani look like a fairy goddess and she can finally kill this unfortunate crush deader than a doornail.
â
Tahaniâs angrily eating gingersnap cookies across the room and she looks gorgeous even in the sweater from hell (literally). Of course she does, Eleanor grabs her fourth glass of champagne and swallows it in one long gulp.
She looks down at the Santa Clown smiling up at her with its big, creepy, blood red grin. âShut up! Iâm going to burn you later you know that right?â
â
A lot of the rest of the night is gonna be blank but what Eleanor will remember the next morning is gonna be this:
â
All of them in a circle, as they all do end up ritually burning their sweaters in Tahaniâs back yard. Even Chidi looking like he feels better after they go up in flames (his had the picture of two garish-looking red boots).
â
The satisfied smile on Tahaniâs face as her sisterâs likeness joins the bonfire being both terrifying and really hot.
â
The thought that Eleanor should totally tell her that.
â
âHey, TahaniâŚâ
â
Roasting marshmallows over the fire and trying to sing some dirty versions of traditional Christmas carols but ending up just giggling as soon as too many âforksâ join the lyrics.
â
âYouâre way, way, way hotter than um⌠that sweater face, with the- things.â
â
A kiss that tastes like burnt sugar and cranberry punch and gingerbread.
â
Flashes of smooth bronze skin and silky long hair. A playful bite at her neck. Her own mouth traveling down a naked chest.
â
Eleanor wakes up warm and safe and really, really naked.
âOh, bloody forking hell.â Curses a familiar British voice from behind her.
thank you so much for participating in my fandom advent calendar! i hope it has been a good month for you and that something awesome happens to you today! day 25: christmas day!
Ale woke up early Christmas morning. He extricated himself from the warmth of his boyfriendâs arms and pulled on the pajama pants heâd gotten from Magnus the night before. He placed a kiss on Magnusâ forehead and shuffled out of their room to make himself some tea.
Between him and their kitchen, however, was their entire family. Vampires, werewolves, warlocks, and shadowhunters sprawled across the living room on mattresses and couches. All of them sported festive seasonal pajamas, all courtesy of Magnus, a tradition he had been quite insistent on. They all were soundly asleep and creating a rather impossible maze for Alec to navigate to get to his tea.
Alec had to wonder what he did to deserve for this to be his life. He had an unbelievably wonderful boyfriend, a beautiful home with him which would regularly come alive with the presence of their joint family. It was often times overwhelming to him to think of all that had happened to him in such a short span of time.
But he knew he wouldnât trade a moment of it. Even the mistakes he had made, the things he had lost, in hindsight seemed so necessary to the growth heâd experienced. He couldnât see himself parting with any of the lessons he had learned, especially the hard ones. He felt wiser and stronger than he had been not even a year ago when he first met Clary Fairchild. Then, Alec had hated her, wanted her gone as soon as possible. Now, he knew he owed everything he has now to her. This Christmas morning wouldnât be the same without her lying back to back with his sister. Although they still rarely saw eye to eye, Alec found himself unsurprised he considered Raphael family now too. Even Simon was growing on him.
Warm hands wrapped around Alec from behind, soft lips planted a kiss on his back, pulling him from his musings.
âItâs too early for you to be up, angel,â Magnus murmured into his skin. âCome back to bed. Bedâs too cold without you.â
Alec hummed quietly in response, turning in Magnusâ embrace to kiss his boyfriend properly. It earned him a smile when they pulled apart.
âWhyâre you just standing out here anyway?â
âI was trying to get tea, but I gotâŚâ he gestured to all the peaceful looking faces around them, suddenly feeling a bit emotional. âDistracted.â
Magnus nodded and pulled him back into their room. With a flick of his wrist, he summoned Alecâs favorite tea. He stared into his own contimplatively for a few quiet moments.
âYou know,â he said softly. âI get it. You all are the best gift I could have ever received. I spent centuries of my life doing nothing to deserve any of you and Iâll spend the rest of it wondering why I got to have the time with you I have.â
Alec let that settle over him, ridiculous as it seemed that Magnus was the one unworthy of him and his half of their dysfunctional family.
âItâs just hard to believe that all this is mine,â Alec confessed. âMy family, my home, my life. I feel like I blinked and suddenly I had more than I could have ever asked for.â
âNo better time than the holidays to soak that all in. Count your blessings and all that Mundane stuff.â
They cuddled up on the widow seat, drinking tea and watching the sun rise, each lost in the thoughts of all they had gained and lost over the past several months. The light of dawn cast a soft glow over the glittering snow. More gentle kisses were pressed into cheeks, necks, shoulders, and foreheads.
Just as the cloudy sky began to turn a rosy shade of pink, they heard stirring in the living room.
âI suppose we should go greet our family,â Alec said, finishing off his tea.
âJust a minute more wonât hurt,â Magnus replied, placing a final kiss on his lips.
Alec couldnât argue. He kissed Magnus again, deeper this time, trying to express to him that no matter what things theyâd bought for each other and put under the massive tree in the lounge, no gift could ever come close to the privilege of loving Magnus.
âMerry Christmas, Alexander,â Magnus whispered.
Kai Raine took on a writing challenge from @lesdemonium. A prompt a day for 25 days, a fandom advent calendar. Weâll see how this goes.Â
Day 1: a greeting/introduction
âExplain to me again whatâs happening here,â Alec said, swirling his glass of wine in one hand.
He and Magnus were sitting on one side of a table for four in a high end restaurant waiting for Simon Lewis, of all people. The vampire was at the very bottom of the list of people Alec wanted to be trapped in a social setting with for several hours, and he was starting to curse Magnusâ irresistible persuasion tactics. But, Magnus had brought it up in the midst of an assault of hickies on the rune on his neck a few days ago and Alec had been too keen to get on with other things to actually listen to what his half-naked boyfriend was murmuring into his skin. Heâd only really caught something about âSimonâs new boyfriendâ and âa double date Friday night.â
âSimon has a new boyfriend,â Magnus said, bringing Alecâs wandering mind back to the present. âHe wants me to be the first to meet him apparently, even before Clary. Something about it being like a meet-the-parents, but not really cuz Iâm not his parent and then he rambled a whole bunch about how he wasnât implying I was old and something else about a stepfather. I tuned most of it out; he doesnât know how to shut up.â
Alec nodded and sipped his wine before asking, âYeah, but why am I here?â
âBecause I refuse to sacrifice date night,â Magnus answered, kissing Alecâs cheek and intertwining their hands.
Alec hummed gratefully as he brought Magnusâ hand to his lips. Establishing regular date nights had been Alecâs idea after all: a way of making time for the the things he cared about, as Magnus had once told him he needed to do. He was glad the ritual seemed just as important to Magnus as it was to him. The few hours every week where nothing but world-shattering emergencies was allowed to interrupt them did Alec more good than he cared to admit.Â
âOh,â he heard Magnus gasp, surprised. âWell, thatâs one way to do it.â
Alec followed Magnusâ line of sight and easily found what had startled him. Simon had arrived, and with him a man who looked uncannily like Jace Herondale. Alec thought at first that it was Jace, but he dismissed the notion almost immediately. Heâd left him and their sister in charge of the Institute while he went out. And besides, his brother was a lot of things, but bisexual certainly wasnât one of them. In fact, it was almost annoying sometimes, how straight Jace was.
But, as the pair came upon them, it became really hard to deny that the man with Simon was his parabatai. From the genuine horror on his face when his eyes caught Alecâs to the âoh shitâ look on Simonâs, it was clear that he was an unexpected part of this eveningâs equation, and that the shadowhunter was irrefutably Jace.
Alecâs emotions went cascading into madness with the realization. His wine glass dropped out of hand and crashed to the floor.
âJace?â he breathed, still not quite believing his eyes.
He nodded, destroying any last doubt Alec had. âI didnât know exactly how to introduce you to this part of me, but yeah. Iâm Simonâs boyfriend.â
And suddenly Alec was sure he would need something a lot stronger than wine to keep him from kicking his brotherâs ass in the middle of the restaurant.
fandom advent calendar day two: snow (or lack thereof)
Magnus Bane was centuries old. He did not pout. Especially not about trivial things, like the fact that it was December second, 50 degrees outside, and there was absolutely no chance of snow in the foreseeable forecast.
Stupid mundanes.
Heâd paid enough attention to things outside the shadowworld in the past century or so to know it was their fault the climate was changing. New York was supposed to be buried under at least a foot of snow right now and it wasnât. Magnus liked the snow; he liked the way the city looked covered in it. The view of the cityscape was always beautiful, but winter was always the best.
But instead of snow on his balcony, it was rain puddles.
Alecâs arms suddenly wrapped around him from behind. He leaned into his boyfriendâs embrace, letting it melt away at least some of his bad mood. No day could be considered bad when his angel with him. Even if he did wish they could be watching it snow from the safety and warmth of the loft. These days when both of them had the whole day off were rare, and he couldnât be blamed for wanting to spend it doing mundane things, like drinking hot cocoa wrapped in blankets and watching Elf on T.V.Â
Alec pressed a kiss into Magnusâ neck and muttered, âWhatâre you thinking about?â
âItâs so warm out for the time of year,â Magnus sighed, turning to kiss the side of Alecâs mouth.
Alec hummed in agreement. âGood for demon hunting.â
Magnus frowned at him. âI never thought about that. Winter coats arenât exactly conducive to the mobility needed to do your job, are they?â
Alec shook his head and Magnus suddenly took back every wish heâd made for snow this season. If it would put his Alexander in danger, he would gladly do without.
âFrom what Iâve seen,â Alec said, playing with the hem of Magnusâ shirt, âitâs not supposed to snow for at least a week. If only we knew someone with magic, like a wizard or a something, who had the power to change the weather.â
Duh.
Alec chuckled quietly in his ear before pressing a kiss beneath it. He loosened his grip on Magnusâ waist as if inviting him to do as heâd just suggested. And, for a moment, he considered it. But even if his nephilim wasnât out this afternoon, other shadowhunters he cared about were.
But, heâd be damned if anyone would try to tell him he couldnât have his cake and eat it too. He stepped out of Alecâs embrace and toward the balcony, rubbing his hands together and summoning his magic. With a quick upward flick of his arms, it began snowing inside his wards. He took a moment to admire his own handiwork before turning back to look at Alec, who was watching him with an intense expression.Â
So quietly Magnus almost missed it, Alec muttered, âItâs so hot when you show off like that.â
Magnus felt a smirk pulling at his lips. âOh please, Alexander. Thatâs hardly what i would consider a difficult spell.â
Alec just shook his head and smiled, meeting him halfway across the space between them. He pulled Magnus into his arms again and kissed him properly.
âSince weâve no place to go,â he mumbled. âMight as well let it snow.â

This is gonna be late but asgfgfbnslffl I wanted to write it.
xxx
Magnus had to admit, as skeptical as he was at first of Clary making all of them write letters to Santa during the cookie party, he was sincerely grateful for the advantage she had given him. With the letters stacked on his desk and a promise to send them out with the post tomorrow, Magnus had gained access to the ultimate shopping list for his whole family. Tomorrow, when Alec had gone off to work, Magnus could open them and give the shadowhunters, vampires, werewolves, and one very cute baby warlock the Christmas they all deserved. (Especially Simon, who had graciously participated in all of their Christmas-themed activities despite it currently being the middle of Hanukkah.) It had been an incredibly rough year for everyone; theyâd lost a lot and sacrificed even more. Magnus hoped he could bring some cheer to lull between seemingly endless wars.
The next morning, Magnus sat down in his study with a cup of tea and his reading glasses. He may or may not have also had a Santa hat on, though he saw himself more as a Sexy Claus than a Santa Claus. (Which had led to a full blown role-play in which Alec straddled his lap so he could âtell Sexy what he wanted for Christmasâ and whisper obscene things in Magnusâ ear, but that was nobodyâs business but their own.)
An hour later, he had a frustratingly non-material list. With the exception of Madzie and Max Lightwood, all of them had asked for such unquantifiable things. Simon wished his mother would make a full recovery from drinking. Maryse had wished to repair her relationship with her daughter. Izzy had asked for advice on how to tell Alec she was bisexual, which Magnus could give her but wasnât a gift. Jace wanted more free time so he and Clary could actually go on dates and have a real relationship. Claryâs was only a plea that no one else die on account of her, and Magnusâ heart broke for her. Raphael, whose letter was written more like a prayer, just asked peace and health for his sister. Luke asked for unity among the downworld. Maia wanted to pass her classes in college. And Alec⌠Alec said he wanted to be immortal so he could be Magnusâ forever; they were definitely going to have to talk about that.
Magnus sat back in his chair with a sigh and tossed both his glasses and the letters onto the desk. He was no closer to a substantial list than he had been when he started and exponentially more defeated. Even as a powerful High Warlock, he couldnât give any of them what they really wanted for Christmas. He had hoped that he would be able to lighten their loads this season and give them at least some of the joy they all truly deserved, but despair was starting to settle on him like a wet blanket. As usual, he found himself falling desperately short of being good enough for the people he loved.
It didnât occur to him that there was a letter missing until he got up to make himself a drink. He had also written a letter, at Claryâs insistence, and put it at the bottom of the stack for disposal after he was finished reading the others. It didnât take a detective to deduce that Alec had taken his with the intention of reading it and buying the whole list, same as Magnus was doing with the othersâ. Magnus smiled knowing Alec would be as frustrated as he was as Magnus hadnât written anything material on his list either. How could he, when he had all he could ever want sitting in his living room watching the Grinch and writing letters to a legend he was older than? Magnus was a selfish old man, but even he knew asking for more everything was overboard. So heâd only wished the Angels would allow him to keep these people for as long as possible.
Of course, a list of impossible wishes would never stop Sexy Claus from piling presents as high as the ceiling anyway. He was certain he knew these people well enough to shop for them without their letters to Santa. And that was exactly what he was going to do as soon as he dealt with the client that was ringing his doorbell.
(And if Alec found and read the letters later that very night while Magnus was making dinner, neither of them said a word about it.)
Or Alec has accidentally informed Izzy about her feeling for Clary, unfortunately she wasn't actually aware of them until then.

âI am so stupid.â Izzy whines, voice muffled by the pillow she holds over her face.
âYouâre not.â Alec says, exasperation clear in her brotherâs tone. She pulls up a corner of the pillow to glare at him.
âIâm in love with Clary. Iâve been in love with Clary since I donât know when and only noticed it now that sheâs actually dating Jace. Clearly Iâm not smart.â She says with a huff and puts the pillow back where it belongs. Over her head, to hide her from the universe. âApparently even you noticed before I did.â
âThanks.â Alec says dryly.
âYou know what I mean.â Izzy says and waves her arm vaguely around in his direction. âIâm the one whoâs good with feelings. And crushes. You needed Magnus to crash your wedding before youâd-â
âI was well aware of my crush on Magnus, Izzy.â Alec says, a slightly insulted tone to his words.
âGreat, my oblivious older brother has been more self aware than me. And I met Clary before you met Magnus.â
âBy like two days.â
âConsidering the fact youâre practically engaged already-â
âWeâre not engaged.â Alec splutters and she takes a quick peek because even now as she feels like her worldâs imploding a bit she canât help but take pleasure in her brotherâs embarrassed blushing.
âLike I said. Considering youâre practically engaged already while I needed you to mention this before the penny even dropped...â She trails off as her throat closes up, bantering with Alec had distracted her for a bit but now the aching feeling inside her chest returns without mercy.
She likes Clary, she's always known that. Thereâs always been something bright and shining about her that drew Izzy like moth to a flame, from the day she crashed into their lives and pulled them all out of the monotony theyâd been stuck in.Â
And yes, it might have shaken a lot of ugly things loose, - Valentine and Jonathan and their parentsâ Circle past - but Izzy still believes thatâs better than them still having remained waiting in the shadows.
And sheâs attracted to Clary. She knew that too, but Izzyâs attracted to lots of people so she hadnât thought it a problem. And if Alec hadnât tried to awkwardly make her feel better about her unrequited feelings she could have continued to be completely oblivious to them.
âI hate you.â She says, not meaning it at all but somehow feeling better having said it anyway. âWhy did you have to tell me?â
âLike you said, youâre usually the self aware one. I though you knew Iz, and honestly youâve been pretty-â
âObvious?â Izzy asks.
âYeah.â Alec says, apology in his voice.
And on reflection she has been. Averting eyes when Clary and Jace were dancing around each other, smiling at Clary like she put the sun in the sky, spending every moment both of them are free together; by talking, or training, or trying to catch Clary up with some new relevant detail of a Shadowhunterâs life that might have been ignored during the hectic months of war with Valentine.
She can see how Alec, so used to intentionally being a step apart and observing everything like the protective older brother and competent Head of the Institute he is, could have seen the signs and reached the correct conclusion. She just doesnât understand how she missed it herself.
A memory from the party right after Razielâs Rise hits her and she wishes she could be swallowed up by the blankets.
âI told her I always wished I had a sister.â She says, mortified.
âOh, Iz.â Alecâs voice is gentle and she has to fight off tears at how sympathetic he suddenly sounds. âDo you want me to go raid motherâs liquor cabinet?â
Izzy thinks about it only for a moment.Â
âOh by the Angel, yes.â
---
Itâs maybe five minutes later that thereâs a knock by the door. She doesnât bother to get up.
âCome in!â She calls to Alec, pillow still over her face.
As soon as she hears the door sliding open she starts talking.
âSo how do you think I should deal with this? Two bottleâs of momâs finest scotch and then a drunken letter Iâm gonna burn later starting with âDear Clary, I just figured out Iâm totally in love with you, please stop dating Jace?â. Angel, Iâm awful and I donât even know if sheâs into girls too.â
Thereâs a startled, decidedly not-Alec gasp by the open doorway and Izzy sits up so quickly the pillow topples off the bed.
Claryâs standing wide eyed halfway into her room and Izzy feels all the air leave her lungs.
âClary- I- that wasnât- I didnât-â Izzy clenches her mouth shut and stays frozen, sitting in her bed.
âYouâre in love with me?â Clary says, looking shocked.
âI didnât mean that. I mean I did, but itâs fine, I donât- I donât actually want you to break up with Jace for me.â Izzy says and flinches. âNot that I think you would. I just... I though you were Alec.â
The silence that follows is excruciating, and Izzy suddenly doesnât know what to do with her hands. Frustration sparks in her belly overtaking the terror as the loudest emotion inside her. Sheâs Isabelle Lightwood, sheâs always comfortable in her skin, confidence leaking out of her pores and right now she canât seem to finish a sentence or figure out what to do with her hands.
How did one innocent question from her older brother lead her to this? She was fine living on in her cloud of oblivion, oblivion didnât hurt like this.
âIâm not.â Clary says and then clears her throat still looking like Izzy had knocked all the wind from her.
âWhat?â Izzy asks, confused.
âIâm not dating Jace. Anymore. We broke up two weeks ago.â Clary says and Izzy tries her best to smother the hope trying to wriggle free in her chest.
âOh.â Izzy says. âSorry?â
âYou are?â She says, sounding unsure.
âAre you?â And Izzy needs to know because the fact Claryâs apparently not dating her brother after all doesnât necessarily mean she isnât still in love with him. And even if she isnât it doesnât mean she has feelings for Izzy.
âNot really, it was... too weird. I know heâs not actually my brother now, and believe me, Iâm relieved, but- but it was too weird for us.â
âBut before, you were both-â Izzy doesnât even know why sheâs not changing the subject.
âPining? Yeah, and we probably still would be if we hadnât tried to actually be together, but turns out when you remove the incest guilt the thing we were feeling guilty about wasnât that huge after all.â Clary says in a way that makes Izzy certain she had already talked through this with someone else. Probably Simon.
They fall into another lengthy silence. Staring at each other.
Claryâs beautiful. And this isnât news to Izzy but suddenly seeing her for the first time since being struck in the face by the truth of her feelings, itâs starker than ever. Fiery red curls fall out of Claryâs messy ponytail, framing her face attractively. Thereâs runes all over her shoulders and arms and Izzy realizes the familiar itch in her fingers is from wanting to trace every curved line.
âAre you?â Izzy says, interrupting the now charged silence.
âAm I what?â Asks Clary, an amused curl to her lips.
âInto girls too?â Izzyâs fingers clench the sheets under her hands, heart beating rapidly against her rib cage as she waits for the answer.
âYeah.â Clary smiles. And then her smile grows wider as she finally finishes stepping into her room. âIâm very, very bi. And also... um, I like you too.â
âLikeâ wasnât really the word that started this conversation, but thatâs okay. Honestly sheâs not really ready for the other âLâ word yet either, thereâs rather a difference between admitting it to Alec when he already knows, and she needs him to help her feel better about it being hopeless, and saying it on purpose to Clary when sheâs only just realized it herself.
But apparently they have time. Now that she knows itâs not hopeless after all.
---
Alecâs still trying to break his way into his motherâs hidden expensive liquor cabinet when his phone pings with a message from Izzy.
He reads it and smiles. It seems his sister wonât be needing any temporary heartache cures tonight.
âI want flurries. Make it happen.â Parker says matter-of-factly, not a hint of a joke on her face. And Alec loves her, if she asked heâd hack into NASA and change all mentions of the moon to her name - wouldnât even be hard actually, NASA really needs more funding for their cyber-security.
Hardison really feels rather bad for them.
The point here being that Alec would give Parker the world and sometimes he loves her most because she almost believes heâs magic. He thinks. Itâs sometimes hard to tell with Parker.
But she does look at him with the kind of look that makes warmth bloom in his chest and for a stupid grin to slip on his face. He kinda likes being like a magician for Parker.
But how the hell is he gonna make snow happen?
-
Sheâs spinning around in her green elf costume, arms wide, snow falling on her face and the biggest smile ever on her face. Her eyes are sparkling and bright as she marches back into the bar to grab his hands and pull him outside along her. When the cold air hits them she leans back, twisting on the heels of her shoes and guiding him along until theyâre both spinning like children. Sheâs giggling and then so is he, because her laugh is far too infectious.Â
Their family is undoubtedly watching them in fond amusement, but he canât bother to look away to check.
At the back of his head he reminds himself to cancel that emergency order he placed this morning for the four snow machines; needed by a fake movie production shooting a fake remake of Itâs a Wonderful Life - starring Dwayne Johnson, because if he was coming up with a story he was doing it right.Â
But it seems Santaâs got his back this Christmas.
