amore mio
ENGLISH (italian words explained below) You sat by the window, sunlight spilling through the slightly open window. A book rested open in your lap, though your eyes hadn’t moved across the page in some time.
Your attention was elsewhere, drawn instead to your son.
Federico sat on the carpet, playing with his toys, giggling to himself occasionally.
It was the kind of sound that softened everything in you, the kind you never grew tired of hearing.
Then, the door creaked open.
Your heart gave that familiar little skip, the one it always did when he came home.
Luca stepped inside, brim of his hat casting a shadow over his face before his hazel eyes swept the room and landed on you.
“Amore mio…” he said, his voice low, warm, and unmistakably affectionate.
You rose from the sofa, your book forgotten. “Amore…” you greeted him, a soft smile forming. “Come stai?”
You crossed the room to him, Luca’s arms came around your waist immediately, pulling you close as if it was the most natural thing in the world.
You pressed two gentle kisses to his cheeks.
Luca’s expression softened at the touch, “Better now that I’m home with you,” he murmured.
He took your hands, turning them over and pressing a slow kiss to each palm.
His hazel eyes lingered on your face like he was memorising every detail all over again.
“You look beautiful today,” he said quietly. “As always.”
A faint laugh left you, soft and unguarded. “Oh, amore… you flatter me.”
You leaned in and kissed him, brief, tender.
From the floor, Federico suddenly babbled, finally managing a bright excited, “Papa!”
Your attention shifted instantly. Smiling, you bent down and lifted him into your arms before carrying him over to Luca.
Luca’s entire expression changed the moment he saw his son, something softer, almost boyish, breaking through. He ruffled Federico’s hair gently.
“Ciao, Fede.”
He took him easily from your arms, settling the boy onto his hip. Federico clung to him without hesitation, already content.
“He’s growing fast,” Luca said, glancing at you as he adjusted his grip. “He’ll be a man before we know it.”
“Oh Dio mio, don’t say that…” you sighed, brushing your fingers through Federico’s soft dark hair. “I wish he could stay small like this forever.”
Luca let out a quiet chuckle. “You know that’s not how it works, mia bella.”
He bounced Federico lightly, making a face that drew a delighted little giggle from the boy. “But I agree. He’s the most adorable little devil.”
You smiled at that, leaning in to press a kiss to Luca’s cheek again. “He got his face from his lovely father…”
“How was business today, amore?” you asked, gently guiding him toward the couch.
“Today was… tiring,” he admitted, rolling his shoulders. “Many meetings. Many deals. Nothing we cannot handle, of course.”
“Would you like some wine, love?” Without waiting for an answer, you were already drifting toward the alcohol cabinet.
Luca lowered himself onto the sofa with a quiet exhale, the tension of the day easing slightly now that he was home.
Now that he was with you. Federico squirmed in his lap, still full of restless energy.
At your offer, he gave a small nod. “Sì, grazie, carina.”
His eyes followed you as you moved. You poured him a small glass of wine, just enough to take the edge off, and carried it back to him.
“I was thinking we could have aperitivo outside in the garden today,” you said, settling beside him on the couch. “The weather is so nice.”
Federico, perched comfortably in Luca’s lap, suddenly perked up. “Oggi… I take passeggiata… in park…” he tried, words tumbling out.
Luca’s expression softened immediately. He took the wine from you and gave a quiet hum of approval. “That sounds wonderful, cara mia.”
Then he looked down at Federico, pride flickering through his tired features. “You went for a long walk in the park with your mother? Bravo, figlio mio.”
Federico straightened at the praise, like it had given him new authority. He pushed himself upright on the couch, standing between you both with sudden determination.
“Calcio!” he announced loudly, as if it were a command rather than a request.
Your breath left you in a soft huff as you brushed a hand over his hair. “Love, in a bit. Let your poor father sit for a moment.”
Luca let out a low chuckle, shaking his head. “You hear that? The little capo is already giving orders.” He ruffled Federico’s hair again, but the boy only planted his hands on his hips.
“Alright, alright,” Luca sighed, though there was no real defeat in it. “Five minutes, and we play calcio in the garden.”
He leaned over and pressed a kiss to your temple.
A soft smile touched your lips as you watched your son already vibrating with excitement.
“Amore,” you said gently, “go get your shoes and then we’ll go outside, hm?”
“Si!” Federico shouted instantly, scrambling off the couch and running down the hallway.
The house fell into a rare, brief quiet.
You leaned into Luca with a small, satisfied chuckle. “Ciao, amore…”
Luca slipped an arm around your shoulders, pulling you in without hesitation. His lips brushed the top of your head, slow and affectionate.
“Ciao, bella mia,” he murmured, eyes still lingering on the hallway where Federico had disappeared. “Sometimes I wonder how we ended up with a little tyrant like him.”
You shifted, resting your legs over his as your head settled comfortably against his shoulder. “Oh, amore,” you teased softly, kissing along his jaw. “I think your genes just won in a few aspects…”
Luca smirked, one brow lifting at your words. “Oh, so you’re blaming me for his stubbornness now, tesoro?”
His hand toyed lazily with the fabric of your dress, his attention split between you and the distant sound of Federico stumbling around the other room.
You hummed, nodding slightly. “I do think so… and I wouldn’t have it any other way.”
Leaning in, you let your lips hover over his, close enough to feel him, not quite enough to give him what he wanted.
Luca’s hand lingered at your waist and tightened, pulling you just that little bit closer as he closed the distance between you.
The kiss was slow, deeper. The kind that never stayed innocent for long.
When you finally pulled away, Luca exhaled against your lips, a low mutter slipping out.
“Mannaggia, woman…” he murmured, voice roughened with restraint. “You can’t tease me like that and expect us to make it outside for calcio.”
Your fingers caught lightly at his collar, keeping him close just a moment longer.
“Hm,” you whispered, a faint smile playing at your lips. “I think you like it that way.”
Before he could answer, Federico’s voice rang out from the other room.
“Mama! Non trovo the shoe!!!”
You sighed softly, releasing Luca with reluctant ease. “Arrivo!” you called back immediately.
You pressed one last quick kiss to Luca’s lips, brief, almost absentminded, before slipping away toward your son.
Luca watched you go, an amused half-smile tugging at his mouth as he took another slow sip of wine.
Then, with a quiet exhale, he stood.
He followed you into the other room, where Federico was struggling dramatically with his shoe.
Luca crouched without hesitation.
“Here, Fede,” he said, voice gentler now. “Let me help.”
His hands worked quickly, putting the shoes on and tying the laces. Federico watched him closely.
You stepped past them both a moment later. “I’ll prepare aperitivo in the meantime…” you said, leaning down to kiss Federico’s head, then Luca’s lips, before slipping into the kitchen.
Luca lingered for a second after you left, eyes following you before he straightened again.
Then he turned to Federico.
“Come on,” he said, picking up the football.
Outside, the world narrowed to the garden, the sun, and the sound of his son’s laughter as Luca kicked the ball lightly forward. Federico chased after it with relentless enthusiasm.
After a while you had finally prepared everything, the table outside ready.
“Amore!” you called out, setting down plates of parmigiano bites, prosciutto, mortadella, tomatoes, and fresh bread. “Venite!”
Luca glanced up immediately, “Ah,” he said, giving the ball one final, easy kick before jogging over with Federico. “Perfect timing.”
Federico climbed into his chair without hesitation, already reaching for a slice of prosciutto.
“Looks delicious, cara mia,” Luca said warmly, leaning in to press a kiss to your cheek before sitting down.
You smiled, softening. “Grazie, amore…”
Federico was already mid-bite when you nudged a plate closer. “Remember, amore,” you told him gently, “you can’t have only prosciutto…”
Luca let out a quiet chuckle beside you, watching the two of you with that familiar look in his eyes, like he was exactly where he was meant to be.
The boy’s obsession with prosciutto was unmistakably inherited from Luca.
“Let him be,” he said with a soft chuckle, helping himself to a piece of cheese. “He’s taking after his old man.”
He leaned back slightly, “Besides, a few pieces of prosciutto never hurt anyone.”
You rolled your eyes at him, amusement tugging at your mouth. “If you say so, old man…”
You drizzled olive oil over your tomatoes, adding a pinch of salt.
Luca gasped dramatically, hand pressing to his chest, “Careful, tesoro. You may be my wife, but I still expect a bit of respect from you.”
Before you could respond, his hand slid to your side, pinching your waist lightly and teasingly. His eyes sparked with that familiar teasing glint.
“And I’ll show you just how ‘old’ I am later tonight,” he murmured lowly, leaning in just enough for only you to hear.
“Luca…” you warned softly, though there was no real heat behind it.
He only snickered, completely unbothered. “What? He’s four, cara mia. He doesn’t know what I’m talking about.”
Federico, meanwhile, was entirely absorbed in stuffing bread into his mouth.
Luca turned toward him with a sigh. “Slow down, figlio. You’ll choke yourself at that rate.”
Without missing a beat, you handed Federico a glass of water. He took it with both hands, drank dramatically, then let out a satisfied “Ah!” before giggling to himself.
You smiled softly at him, wiping your fingers before taking a sip of wine and returning to your plate.
Luca leaned back in his chair, refilling his glass. “You know,” he said after a beat, “sometimes I forget how exhausting children are.”
Then his gaze shifted to Federico again, softer now. “But then I look at him… and all that exhaustion is worth it.”
Your expression softened instantly. “He is our little Fede…” you said warmly, handing your son a piece of mortadella. “Did you hear? Celia from down the street is having another baby.”
Luca took another bite of prosciutto, chewing thoughtfully. “Another baby, hm? That’s the third one for them now, isn’t it?”
“Si…” you sighed, watching Federico carefully as he ate. “Dio mio… three. Is it not a bit too much?”
“Some people like big families.”
His eyes followed your movements as you gently cleaned Federico’s mouth, the domesticity of it settling over him like something almost foreign, and yet deeply right.
“Personally,” he added with a faint smile, ruffling Federico’s hair, “I think I’ve had enough trouble keeping up with you and this little capo.”
A quiet pause fell between you three.
Then you hesitated, tilting your head slightly. “So you want no more?” you asked, your voice softer now, curious.
Luca set his glass down a little slower this time, eyes narrowing just slightly as he studied you.
“Are you hinting at something, cara?” he asked.
His gaze lingered on yours, as if trying to read what you weren’t saying out loud.
You only shrugged, far too casually. “Boh… I was only asking about your intentions.”
And then, without even looking at him properly, you reached over and stole a piece of prosciutto from his plate.
Luca’s eyebrow lifted instantly.
“My intentions,” he repeated slowly, leaning back in his chair. His eyes stayed on you.
“Well… if you’re asking if I want more kids…” A pause. “I suppose it’s not off the table.”
You tilted your head, entirely too innocent. “Fede is so alone, don’t you think?”
Luca narrowed his eyes.
“Ah,” he said quietly, leaning forward just a fraction. “So now you’re the one bringing this up.”
His voice dropped lower, more intimate. “Careful with that tone, amore mia… sounds like you’re already planning something.”
There was something in your eyes then, soft, warm, dangerous in its own quiet way.
That same look you’d had years ago, when everything between you had first changed.
When Federico hadn’t existed yet.
And Luca saw it.
But before either of you could say anything more, Federico’s voice cut through the moment.
“Papa! Posso ancora prosciutto!”
Luca let out a long, suffering groan, tipping his head back. “Dio santo… this boy has the appetite of a lupo.”
“You already ate half the plate. Now ask properly, or no more prosciutto tonight.” he said firmly, though there was no real bite to it.
Federico froze.
Then the pout arrived.
Big eyes. Trembling lip. The full performance.
“Mama…” he sniffled dramatically, arms stretching toward you like you were his only salvation.
Luca’s jaw tightened immediately.
“Don’t you dare,” he muttered under his breath, not even looking at you now, because he already knew you were seconds away from folding.
Federico sniffled louder.
You looked between them both, clearly trapped in a domestic hostage situation of your own making.
“Amore… just ask nicely,” you tried gently, but your voice already wavered with defeat.
That was it.
You sighed, and lifted Federico into your lap.
The boy immediately melted into you with a satisfied little grin, burying his face against your shoulder.
Luca stared at the scene for a long moment.
“Madonna santa,” Luca muttered, dragging a hand down his face “You’re lucky your mother is soft.”
You sighed immediately, already shifting Federico more comfortably in your lap. “Luca, amore… he is just a little boy…”
Still, your hand moved gently over your son’s head, smoothing his hair as you offered him another piece of prosciutto.
Luca let out a huff of false annoyance. “He knows exactly what he’s doing.”
But even as he complained, his eyes stayed on the two of you.
It was soft.
You huffed lightly at him. “Of course he doesn’t. Isn’t that right, piccolo? You’re just hungry…”
You leaned down and pressed a kiss to Federico’s head, and he immediately leaned further into you like it was his rightful place.
Luca scoffed, leaning back in his chair with a slow shake of his head. But still… he couldn’t shake the small smile resting on his lips.

ITALIAN
“Come stai?”
“Come sempre.”
“Sta crescendo in fretta,” disse Luca, guardandoti.
“Oh Dio mio, non dirlo…” sospirasti, accarezzando i suoi capelli scuri. “Vorrei che restasse sempre così piccolo.”
Luca rise piano.
I suoi occhi ti seguirono mentre ti muovevi.
Sospirasti piano, accarezzandogli i capelli. “Amore, tra poco. Lascia riposare un attimo il papà…”
Luca rise piano, scuotendo la testa. “Hai sentito?
“Cinque minuti, poi giochiamo a calcio in giardino.”
“Secondo me ti piace così.”
“Mamma! Non trovo la scarpa!!!”
Sospirasti piano, lasciando Luca. “Arrivo!” rispondesti subito.
Sospirasti e prendesti Federico sulle tue ginocchia.
Sospirasti piano, sistemando Federico meglio. “Luca, amore…
“Certo che no. Non è vero, piccolo? Hai solo fame…”
─── ꒰ 🚬 ꒱ ───
