I am so sorry that I’ve been on a reblogging streak for Animorphs. Give it like a week or so and I’ll be back to full on obsessed with HTTYD/Disney/ATLA. It was the first series I read on my own and it was amazing. Re-reading it now has re-awakened an obsession I had as a kid. And it’s not hard to see why....the series is complex, well-written and doesn’t dumb things down even though it’s a tween series. You want scary? Forget Goosebumps, read Animorphs. It’s a long series (54 books in the main series and 11 or something books in the world building books like the Andalite Chronicles), and it’s totally worth it.
Why do I love Animorphs so much? And why should you read it? More below the cut...and spoiler-free
The series deals with accurate depictions of PTSD and the horrors of war (and that war isn’t just black/white). And you get to see the evolution of the Animorphs gang’s morals. Characters become more ruthless and take more risks as the series progresses because the stakes become higher (and one could argue that because they are more traumatized as well by everything they had already been though). They don’t always make the right choice and they don’t always win the day, which also makes it feel more realistic. The series deals a lot with morals too and some tough issues (like neglectful guardians in the case of Tobias, depression from Marco’s dad and how it affects his ability to be a caretaker for his son, slavery. survival, basic human species rights, etc)
The author KA Applegate has a wonderful writer’s voice and the series is well thought out from start to finish. I love the character building that the length of the series allows and I love the time and effort she took into the world building. I feel like I KNOW about the Andalites, the Yeerks, Hork Bajir, etc in the same way that George Lucas has made me KNOW all about the Sith and the Jedi.
And she made the stakes high, but realistic. I mean there’s tons of times that the Animorphs almost get trapped in morph or worse, almost get killed. The animorphs are given this immense power to acquire the DNA of any animal they touch and then morph into said animal. Once morphed they have a time limit of two-hours otherwise they will be trapped in the morph forever. And it’s a tween series, right? So nobody will get trapped and main characters won’t die, right? WRONG! KA Applegate traps one of the main characters in morph in the FIRST FUCKING BOOK and the Animorphs witness their new arch-enemy Visser 3 completely mutilate (not just kill, it’s graphic) one of their allies IN THE FIRST BOOK. You know shits real from then on. You wanted a story about an alien invasion, congrats you got a story about an alien invasion and all the horrors that come with it.
Each book is written in first person from the point of view of one of the main animorphs. So you get to hear from the perspectives of Jake, Rachel, Cassie, Marco, Tobias and Ax. Because the series has both male, female and alien (andalite, yeerk, Hork-Bajir) narrators for the different books, it really caters to everyone.
And because I know tumblr loves this shit: the series has TWO main characters that are POC (Marco-latino and Cassie-black) and Ax’s human morph is also a POC as well. So basically half of the Animorphs gang is POC. And Ax is fucking hilarious in human morph. Though I cannot blame him entirely because Sticky buns and cinnamon rolls are delicious.
So yeah, I fucking love Animorphs. Do NOT watch the TV series though. It’s awful and does NOT do the books justice. I personally have a good time turning the TV series into a drinking game, but other than that, the BOOKS are 40,0000 times better. Read them. You won’t be disappointed.
I should probably also have said that I never actually finished the series, reading it as a child. it has long been one of my life goals to return to the series and read it. so, yeah, I'm reallyfuckingexcited. two things pertaining to this: 1) I will be starting a side-blog in the coming months (more on this later). 2) no spoilers! I already know too much.
