Gavin Newsom says state will reject Louisianaās ask, citing laws protecting providers from out-of-state prosecution
Carter Sherman at The Guardian:
California will defy Louisianaās request to extradite a doctor indicted for mailing abortion pills into the southern state,Ā Gavin Newsom, Californiaās governor, said on Wednesday. āLouisianaās request is denied,ā Newsom, a Democrat, said in a statement. āWe will not allow extremist politicians from other states to reach intoĀ CaliforniaĀ and try to punish doctors based on allegations that they provided reproductive health care services. Not today. Not ever.ā Louisianaās attorney general, Republican Liz Murrill,Ā announced on WednesdayĀ that her state would seek the extradition of the doctor, Remy Coeytaux. In records released by Murrillās office, law enforcement officials allege that Coeytaux, who is based in California, mailed pills to a woman in Louisiana in October 2023 through Aid Access, an organization that mails abortion pills throughout the US, in defiance of Louisianaās near-total ban on abortion.
Aid Access providers operate under the protection of āshield lawsā, which aim to guard abortion providers from out-of-state extradition and prosecution. A handful of blue states, including California, passed shield laws following the 2022 overturning of Roe v Wade ā a development that has infuriated abortion opponents, who argue that shield laws are illegal. āItās appalling to see the California governor and attorney general openly admitting that they will protect an individual from being held accountable for illegal, medically unethical and dangerous conduct that led to a woman being coerced into terminating the life of her unborn child,ā Murrill said in a statement. [...] Louisiana has also previously sought the extradition of a New York-based doctor, Margaret Carpenter, over allegations that she mailed an abortion pill to Louisiana. Like California, New York has a shield law protecting abortion providers. Kathy Hochul, New Yorkās Democratic governor, refused the extradition order.
California says no to Louisianaās extradition request to Dr. RĆ©my Coeytaux for mailing abortion pills into the state of Louisiana.

Honduran President Xiomara Castro announced on August 28 that she ordered the suspension of the extradition agreement between her country and the United States. The move was in response to comments made by the U.S. Ambassador to Honduras, Laura Dogu, regarding different high-ranking Honduran officials who had traveled to Venezuela.
The Honduran head of stateĀ wrote in a post, āThe interference and interventionism of the United States, as well as its intention to direct the politics of Honduras through its Embassy and other representatives, is intolerable. They attack, disregard and violate with impunity the principles and practices of international law, which promote respect for the sovereignty and self-determination of peoples, non-intervention and universal peace. Enough. Based on our Constitution and international treaties, I have ordered Chancellor Enrique Reina to denounce the extradition treaty with the United States.ā
No disrespect to any Indonesians reading this, but I suspect the reason heās living there isnāt quite because he thinks itās the greatest country in the world and the only place he can be happy.

Montenegrin police have arrested Roman Ziemian, co-founder of the fraudulent crypto scheme FutureNet, which caused losses estimated at $21 million. Ziemian, living under a false identity in Podgorica, is wanted by South Korea and Poland for fraud, theft, and money laundering. He faces life imprisonment in South Korea. The High Court in Podgorica will decide on his extradition. FutureNet, launched in 2018, was marketed as a multi-level marketing business but has since been exposed as a financial pyramid scheme.

Do states have extradition treaties? Like, if someone is convicted of a crime in New York, and they flee to Florida, does Florida have to give them back? Can New York come down and take them, or does Florida have to give them permission? Is an arrest warrant in one state valid in every other? If the answer is yes, it very soon could become no because methinks republicans convicted of crimes in blue states are gonna start seeking refuge in red states, and then the Supreme Court will overturn whatever precedent they want to in order to protect them.
