Have you ever dated someone that held control of your body?

I don’t mean physically and I’m not talking about assault.

I mean someone who finds out you got your nose pierced and doesn’t speak to you until you take it out and let the hole close.

I mean someone who makes you go home and change because “your dress is too short” even though you felt really beautiful when you put it on that morning, which was unusual for you.

I am happily married to another man now, and it’s not often that I waste my time thinking about this guy that dumped me because I lost weight and I became too confident for him to handle. 

As I write this, though, it is all dawning on me. 

I wanted to have my nose pierced. 

I wanted to wear dresses that made me feel beautiful.

I deserve to feel confident. 

I thank my lucky stars every day that that guy dumped me. Because he did, I had time to work on me. 

I got my nose pierced on what would have been our anniversary.

I wore what made me feel good.

I let my real personality show.

I met the love of my life. He loved me for me. He encourages me to be more confident; to wear what I like; to realize that my body is mine, and if I want to pierce it or tattoo it or anything else it is ultimately my decision. 

He makes me happy. I hope you all take this to heart: you deserve to feel happy, confident, and totally in control of your body. If he/she/they make you feel anything less, move on.

Because the right one is out there. Or maybe not. Maybe the right one for you right now is you. And that’s okay.
