This intriguing old building formerly housed the “Sick and Indigent Roomkeeper’s Society” has 228 years of history. Founded by Samuel Rosborough in 1790 the society is Dublin’s oldest surviving charity serving the poor of Dublin since 1790 and is a famous Dublin landmark. • The society was set up to relieve the needs of the poor, sick and destitute of Dublin city and county, and it does so “without distinction of religion, race or politics”. There was no system of public welfare nor any general policy on the part of the government to address the problem of poverty. It was left to parishes, private individuals and institutions to ease poverty through voluntary work against potatoes, bread, meal...etc. On 15 March 1790, a group of men met to form a society "to be called the Charitable Society for the Relief of Sick and Indigent Roomkeepers of all Religious Persuasions in the City of Dublin." • The Society attracted regular subscriptions of 2 pence a week and some substantial donations, investments and charity sermons, which were a compelling feature of Dublin social life in those days. Monies then distributed to people in need. • Today, it said that though its operations have been adapted and modified, the type of poverty which the society’s founders, Samuel Rosborough and his associates, identified and tried to address in 1790 – poverty due to illness, unemployment, addiction and other unforeseen circumstances – “continues to be a priority for the Society”. • 📸: The Society's original building in its Georgian site outside Dublin Castle in Palace Street has had a new lick of pink paint.
