Moving to a completely new city is not easy at all. And even though most Koreans are friendly towards foreigners, there are also bad people out there who would take advantage of your unawareness just to make a quick buck.
Signing a rental lease is a considerably big transaction so before you seal everything off with a signature, it is important to observe your new house closely. In today's post, I'm going to go over 7 most basic things you need to pay attention to when it comes to picking out your new home. Let's see what those 7 things are, shall we?
1. Check to see if the drains smell.
If the drains, especially those in the bathroom, smell badly, it means the drainpipes are too old and the debris has already piled up too much to resolve in a day or two 😖 My suggestion is to skip this house and move on to another one.
2. Check to see if there's any insect egg or larva.
Insects, especially cockroaches, enter one's house through the drainpipes so if you see any insect egg or larva, it means the house is more or less infested with those hideous things.
3. Check to see if there's any mart or convenient store nearby.
If there's no convenient store or mart nearby, or if it takes too long to go from your place to neither of those two (over 10 minutes), then you'd better look for another house.
4. Rooftop house over semi-basement house.
Both of these two are not the best options, but if you find yourself having no other choice, it is always better to go with rooftop house. Semi-basement houses have bad ventilation, usually grow mold because of the humidity indoor. Semi-basement houses are hot in the weather and mercilessly cold in the winter.
5. Check to see if the house is well furnished.
University students don't have a lot of money to afford home appliances on their own. So instead of wasting your money 💸 on new stuffs, invest your money in a better furnished house.
6. Check to see if the water pressure is strong.
Weak water pressure makes everything a struggle. When you go on a room tour, remember to turn on all the faucets (kitchen and bathroom) and flush the water at least once to see if the water pressure is fine.
7. Make sure you are given all the documents 🧾
Usually, the real estate agency will provide you all the documents you need, including the contract, information of the agency, documents regarding the building (or the land) you will be living in, etc. If the agency or the landlord refuses to give your these documents, it is best to walk away from this deal.
