The Butterfly effect: A property of chaotic systems (such as the atmosphere) by which small changes in initial conditions can lead to large-scale and unpredictable variation in the future state of the system.
The Multiverse theory: The theory that there are infinite universes and with each decision thatâs made, thereâs another universe where youâve made the other decision
In one universe, a rejection ended with a lifelong friendship with three men and falling in love with two others you met over the phone. Now, what went on in the universe where the rejection never happened?
When you made what felt like your first typical best friend in your freshman year of high school, this isnât what you expected.
You were standing in the lunch room, a distance away from the table that you were desperately trying to build up the courage to walk to, more specifically, the black-haired man with his back towards you.
Your friend, amongst a heavy session of truth or dare, had dared you to ask out one of the most desired men in the school; a student that came to South Korea a year ago, Chinese student Zhang Yixing.
It probably wouldnât have been nearly as awkward if it wasnât for the fact that youâd never spoken a word to him.
After pepping yourself up for a few minutes, you forced your feet to carry you before your brain could panic.
There was, however, nothing to stop you from panicking the moment you got there, your thought process going haywire the moment you saw the blonde of the table look at you, the brunette too busy on his phone and the noirette still didnât see you due to you being behind him.
âUh...Xing...â the blonde said, getting Yixingâs attention before pointing at you.
The man turned and the moment his eyes landed on you, all plans for what you were going to say started to get jumble. To try and gain your thoughts back, you started rehearsing what you were going to do in your head
âAsk to go somewhere else, then âwill you go out with meâ, ask to go somewhere else, then âwill you go out with meâ, ask to go somewhere else, then-â
âCan I help you?â
âWill you go out with me?â
Crap.
Things at the table went silent and you were suddenly very hyperaware of all three menâs eyes being on you.
All you could see though was the wide eyes of the man the question was directed at. âWhat?â
You swallowed, wringing at the hem of your uniform blazer. âI-Iâm sorry, can we talk somewhere else?â you practically squeaked.
He looked at the other two before back to you. âSure,â he said with a smile, getting up and following you into the hallway.
Upon walking to an empty area and realizing youâre actually alone, your throat got dry again.
The tall man turned to you. âSo...?â
You swallowed, hoping it would help eliminate the frog in the desert of your throat. âI...I was dared to ask you out by my friend. Iâm sorry if youâre uncomfortable, I can just tell her you said no and we can forget this ever happened.â
He hummed and looked at you before smiling sweetly. âSure.â
Assuming he meant to your suggestion, you bowed a bit. âOkay thank you, Iâm sorry for wasting your time...â you said, turning on your heel to leave.
A hand on your wrist prevented you from going far. âNo, as in Iâll go out with you.â
You swear your heart stopped. âH-Huh?â
He smiled, hand moving from your wrist to your hand. âComing up to me and asking me out must have taken a lot of courage. As far as I know, nobodyâs all that serious about me and I donât have my eyes on anyone else so as long as youâre up for it, Iâd be okay with giving it a shot.â
You werenât sure how to respond, nodding without thinking.
Yixingâs smile grew wider as he held your hand, leading you back into the cafeteria. As soon as he did, he grabbed a chair as he passed by it, pulling it next to his at the table and sitting down, motioning you to sit next to him.
The two others at the table seemed baffled. âUm...whatâs going on? Who is she?â asked the blonde.
The noirette turned his attention to him, smile still wide. âThis is my girlfriend...â he trailed off, both of you realizing you were dating but he didnât even know your name.
âY/Nâ
He nodded and looked back to the mn he was addressing. âY/N. Sheâll probably be around more often so hopefully everyone can get along.â
They went from confused to incredulous. âHyung are you serious?â the brunette asked.
Yixing didnât seem to get their worry, just simply smiling. âI am, Dae. Why?â
The two exchanged looks before looking to you. âAlright, if youâre sure...â the blonde mumbled.
You spent the rest of your lunch getting more and more comfortable with not only your new boyfriend but also his friends. Yixing, wanting to be a good boyfriend, decided to walk you to your class before departing to his own.
As soon as you walked in, you could feel eyes on you, the pair you found yourself focusing on being the wide ones of your best friend.
The moment you walked over to her, she was down your throat. âWhat the hell happened???â
You shrugged, sitting down. âHe said yes.â
Her eyes were practically bugging out at this point. âWait so...youâre dating Yixing now?â she asked incredulously.
You nodded, giving her a large smile, feeling pretty in-disbelief about it yourself. âYep, and his friends are absolute sweethearts. They were worried about me joining at first but when lunch was over, it was Jongdae that asked if I was gonna sit with them again tomorrow.â
The girl instantly started cooing. âI canât believe I finally have an in. I can come sit with you and make Minseok fall in love with me! We could double date!â she said excitedly.
Your smile fell. âUh...well Iâd probably have to ask about that first part. Iâm not sure about the second part though..â
She huffed. âCome on Y/N, what kind of friend doesnât help her best friend get a boyfriend?â she whined.Â
Disgust filled you. âIt makes me a good friend to them. Minseok is a person and deserves to be treated as more than just an accessory you want to own,â you said, getting up and walking to another seat.
The next day at lunch, you took your seat next to your boyfriend, the three greeting you cheerfully.Â
Yixing turned to you. âBy the way, you mentioned you had a friend that caused you to ask me out. Maybe she could sit with us at some point.Â
You cringed a bit at the mention of her, remembering how sheâd spent the whole night texting you about how you didnât see Yixing as anything more than she saw Minseok and that if that made her shallow, youâre just as shallow. It obviously wasn't true, but it definitely helped you see her true colors. âNo, Iâm not sure Iâll be talking to her anymore, she turned out to not be what I thought.â you hummed.
Jongdae pouted. âThatâs no fun. Thatâs okay though, you seem like youâre too nice for someone less than what youâre hoping for.â
Minseok smiled. âhopefully we can offer something like that for you.â
You nodded, looking between the three. âI think youâll do just fine.â
