Sadhu Om:

Even while they appear to be many different things, the world, the soul and God are in reality nothing but the one Self alone. It is wrong to think that they will become Self only after their diverse forms have disappeared. In truth, only Self, the substance or reality of those diverse forms, is real, while the forms themselves are ever unreal.

Why fear death?

Death cannot mean non-being. Why do you love sleep, but not death?

Maharshi: Contemplation wards off all other thoughts. You should merge yourself in the source. At times we merge in the source unconsciously, as in sleep, death, swoon, etc.

What is contemplation? It is merging into the source consciously. Then the fear of death, of swoon, etc. will disappear, because you are able to merge into the source consciously.

Why fear death? Death cannot mean non-being. Why do you love sleep, but not death?

Do you not think now? Are you not existing now? Did you not exist in your sleep?

Even a child says that it slept well and happily. It admits its existence in sleep, unconsciously though.

So, consciousness is our true nature. We cannot remain unconscious. We however say that we were unconscious in our sleep because we refer to qualified consciousness.

The world, the body, etc., are so embedded in us that this relative consciousness is taken to be the Self.

Does anyone say in his sleep that he is unconscious? He says so now. This is the state of relative consciousness. Therefore he speaks of relative consciousness and not of abstract consciousness.

The consciousness is beyond relative consciousness or unconsciousness.

Mind wants a fixed theory to satisfy itself with. Really, however, no theory is necessary for the man who seriously strives to approach God or his true Self. *

Everyone is the Self and indeed, is infinite. Yet each person mistakes his body for his Self. In order to know anything, illumination is necessary. This can only be of the nature of Light; however, it lights up both physical light and physical darkness. That is to say, that it lies beyond apparent light and darkness. It is itself neither, but it is said to be light because it illumines both. It is infinite and is Consciousness. Consciousness is the Self of which everyone is aware. No one is ever away from the Self and therefore everyone is in fact Self-realised; only – and this is the great mystery – people do not know this and want to realise the Self. Realisation consists only in getting rid of the false idea that one is not realised. It is not anything new to be acquired. It must already exist or it would not be eternal and only what is eternal is worth striving for.

Once the false notion ‘I am the body’ or ‘I am not realised’ has been removed, Supreme Consciousness or the Self alone remains and in people’s present state of knowledge they call this ‘Realisation.’ But the truth is that Realisation is eternal and already exists, here and now. (2)

Consciousness is pure knowledge. The mind arises out of it and is made up of thoughts. (3) 

The essence of the mind is only awareness or consciousness. However, when the ego overclouds it, it functions as reasoning, thinking or perceiving. 

The universal mind, not being limited by the ego, has nothing outside itself and is therefore only aware. 

This is what the Bible means by ‘I AM THAT I AM.’ (4)

Since the greatness of the nature of oneness is that the seer alone is the seen, one’s own reality - SELF - is the greatest thing [mahat]. The silent radiant first person which shines, after the ego, the first person who is the seer, has been completely destroyed, alone is SELF, the supreme consciousness.

Sadhu Om: 

All the objects that are seen are nothing but an expansion of the ego, the false first person who sees them. Therefore the reality of both the seer [the ego] and the seen [the entire vast universe] is only one. That reality is nothing but Self, one’s own existence-consciousness, which is the real first person that remains shining as radiant Self-awareness in the state of Silence in which the ego, the false first person, has been completely destroyed. Therefore, since the ego or seer is nothing but an unreal, petty and atom-like reflection of Self, one’s own reality, Self alone is the greatest of all things.

Self is not a void, because it shines and knows itself by its own light of consciousness as the clear and abundant knowledge ‘I am’

Though the absolute reality, which is our essential self-conscious being, is devoid of all relative knowledge – all knowledge of duality or otherness – it is not an absolute void, because it is not devoid of true knowledge, which is the absolute clarity of perfectly non-dual self-consciousness. Therefore rather than describing the absolute reality as a state of sunya, ‘emptiness’ or ‘void’, it is more accurate to describe it as the state of purna, ‘fullness’, ‘wholeness’ or ‘completeness’, because it is the absolute fullness of true knowledge. The same truth that Sri Ramana expresses in verse 12 of Ulladu Narpadu is expressed by him even more succinctly in verse 27 of Upadesa Undiyar: 

The knowledge which is devoid of both knowledge and ignorance [about objects], alone is [true] knowledge. This [true knowledge] is the [only existing] reality, [because in truth] there is nothing to know [other than ourself].
