“Evolution is just a theory!”

1. So are the Germ Theory of Disease and the Theory of Gravity.

Are you telling me that viruses, bacteria, and gravity aren’t confirmed facts?

2. That’s not what “theory” means in science. 

You’re thinking of a hypothesis.

In science, a theory is a model used to explain how/why an observed fact of nature is the way it is. 

Unlike a hypothesis, a theory has been tested and explored extensively and no evidence has been found to contradict it. Just as importantly, a theory has predictive power.

For example, the fossil of tiktaalik could not have been found if what we think we know about evolution and the history of the Earth and its climate were way off the mark.

Scientists used what we know on those subjects to make a prediction that, if what we know of evolution is correct, then we should find a fish/fish-like creature with fins in the process of becoming legs (e.g. fins that would allow it to push itself on land not unlike modern mudskippers) at X time in Earth’s history, which in turn means we should find it around X layer of rock at X part of the world. 

Based on what we know of Earth’s past climate, we know that the most favourable environment for such a creature to have existed would be what is now the Canadian Arctic Archipelago.

So they went there and did some digging at the layer they’d predicted they should find something at and lo and behold, tiktaalik was uncovered.

3. Evolution is a fact. How it works is what’s debatable.

Evolution is the change in allele frequencies in a group. Basically, that’s science-speak for “offspring are not an exact copy of their parent(s), and those small changes add up into big changes over time”.

You can’t argue that that’s not true. 

Even identical twins aren’t 100% identical.

My friends and I, of course, took this as an opportunity to straight up teach fundamentalists' kids about evolutionary theory and all the things that are wrong with young earth creationism.

We called it something like 'Ark Adventures: the Truth About Creation, Evolution, and God's Plan for the Universe' and the parents didn't suspect a thing as we had reputable scientists teach their kids about dinosaurs, human ancestors, and geological time.

“people like me” believe in observable, peer-reviewed scientific data published in credible paleoanthropological resources lol not a book that’s been re-written thousands of times to promote man-made agendas.

“people like me” know that there are roughly 20 different species of early humans that came between chimpanzees and current homo sapiens.

“people like me” know that those early humans started to evolve and come around approx 8 million years ago. modern homo sapiens have only been around for about 300,000 years. and that’s all before we even left Africa.

you know how “people like me” know this? because we follow facts, not fiction. everything I stated has been physically discovered, studied, and peer-reviewed 1mil times over.

there is no “fact” in religion.

I’ve never been one to put people down for their beliefs, but don’t come at me dumb and not expect me to spit some VERIFIABLE truth at ya. play stupid games, win stupid prizes lol
