Since they both originally come from Wurmple, what kind of relationship do Dustox and Beautifly have in the wild? Do they tend to be friendly, or is there any sort of animosity?
Dustox and Beautifly do not interact very often, and are actually one of my favorite examples of niche partitioning within an evolutionary family! Essentially, in order to maximize the uptake of resources by the Wurmple line, the species developed two evolutionary paths: one that is nocturnal and the other that is diurnal in nature. This means that the offspring of any given Dustox or Beautifly have an increased chance of survival to adulthood within the same geographic habitat, because they do not compete for resources with their siblings that follow the opposite evolutionary path than them. This is specifically called temporal niche partitioning.

Against all odds, I submitted a defense-draft of my dissertation to my committee.
Next week, I defend!

Idk I just wanted to do something cute. Convergent evolution has always been one of my favorite concepts in evolutionary bio--how wildly different species reach the same (often extreme) solutions to the same problems.

[ID: A somewhat cartoonish drawing of a fruit bat and a pterosaur flying together. The bat has a reddish brown body with a black snout and dark wings. The pterosaur has a narrow head crest and many needle-like teeth, some of which stick out of its mouth. It is mostly black, with yellow stripes on its wings, a yellow band around its neck, and a yellow and orange head. The two smile at each other, with the bat flying slightly higher. The bat is at the end of one branch of a bright green phylogenetic tree, while the pterosaur is on one branch of a purple phylogenetic tree. In the background is a blue sky with clouds. End ID.]
