Today I learned that Vardo is also a tiny town on the far north edge of Norway. The name comes from an old Norse word which means "wolf island". Vardø has a pretty tragic history, from witch trials where 90 people had their life taken away for suspected witchcraft, then deviation over job loss due to the fishing industry collapse, then continued devastation from the USA doing radar testing causing the villagers increased health issues... yet the town is still home to 2k people. All that said, the little towns motto is:"Cedant Tenebræ Soli", meaning "Darkness shall give way to the sun". I was having a rough morning when google maps mis-guided me to Vardø instead of Vardo... and curiosity led me to inspiration and renewal. Today I'm working on the huia, an extinct relative of the New Zealand saddleback. These birds exhibited the most extreme sexual dimorphism known in bill morphology, meaning they occupied different ecological feeding niches. In this image, the male presents the female with a huhu beetle larva in a courtship overture.
