Forgot to post the sketch for this one, so you get a pic of the final inks! Last of the extinct birds coloring pages, of Archeopteryx, oldest of the feathered creatures I've illustrated for this project. While not technically "birds" (last I checked--this is not my area of expertise!), Archeopteryx exhibited asymmetrical remiges, (aka wing feathers), indicating that they were likely used for flight. Archeopteryx has been a representative of evolution in the public sphere, as it exhibits characteristics of both theropod dinosaurs and birds. I did my best to try to keep them accurate. While I'm sure I messed up somewhere, at least they're a far cry from the Jurrassic Park-y looking monsters of reconstructions I found when researching them! #extinct #extinctbirds #kindaanyway #bird #dinosaur #reconstruction #bartelsintern #coloring #art #illustration #ink (at Cornell Lab of Ornithology)
Today I'm working on the huia, an extinct relative of the New Zealand saddleback. These birds exhibited the most extreme sexual dimorphism known in bill morphology, meaning they occupied different ecological feeding niches. In this image, the male presents the female with a huhu beetle larva in a courtship overture. She's playing coy, but you can tell she likes him. #bird #extinctbirds #huia #sketch #art #illustration #wip #coloring #themoreyouknow #birdfacts #bartelsintern #everythingisastory (at Cornell Lab of Ornithology)
More extinct birds for coloring pages--a mother moa and her chick out on a walk. Flailing posture of the baby moa inspired by the goofy spirit of emu chicks. #moa #extinction #extinctbirds #sketch #birds #art #bartelsintern #illustration #coloring (at Cornell Lab of Ornithology)

I'm still here and quite busy!! Here's a coloring page of a broody female dodo, who doesn't quite like the look of you, a hungry mid-17th-century sailor. #coloring #ink #bartelsintern #dodo #extinction #bird #extinctbirds (at Cornell Lab of Ornithology)
