“maybe  it's  silly,”  he  starts,  looking  at  the  table  in  front  of  him.  “being  twenty-six  and  making  an  ornament  …  but  i  think  my  brother  would  really  like  it.  HE'S  KIND  OF  SENTIMENTAL  LIKE  THAT.  he's  kept  every  ornament  i've  ever  made.  and  i'll  get  him,  like,  a  real  gift  after  this  …  it's  not  like  this  is  the  only  thing  he's  getting  !  are  you  going  to  make  one  ?”

“how  much  do  you  think  the  electric  bill  for  this  is  ?  must  be  CRAZY  HIGH,”  he  jokes,  shoving  his  hands  in  his  pockets  as  he  eyes  the  tree  in  front  of  them.  “you're  a  cider  point  native  …  you  come  to  this  thing  every  year  ?”

hiding  away  during  an  event  is  on  par  for  brett,  but  pulling  the  girl  he's  usually  hiding  from  is  not.  she's  not  hard  to  miss  –  he'd  recognize  her  loud  cackle  anywhere.  he's  not  sure  what's  possessed  him  to  do  so,  but  he  can't  help  but  look  her  up  and  down  once  she  settles  into  her  spot.  "YOU  LOOK  …  NICE,"  is  what  he  settles  on  before  pushing  a  strand  of  hair  behind  her  ear.  “i  have  something  for  you.”

“do  you  think  they'll  let  us  make  an  unlimited  number  of  ornaments  ?  i  have  too  many  people  i  want  to  make  them  for  …  how  would  i  narrow  down  just  who  deserves  one  ?!”

she  feels  a  sense  of  giddy  as  she  stands  and  waits  for  the  tree  to  light  up.  “eee  !  this  is  my  third  christmas  festival  here  and  this  is  always  my  favorite  part,”  she  muses  to  the  person  next  to  her.  “like  …  it  feels  like  christmas  can officially  begin.”

theodora  lee  has  never  found  it  necessary  to  rush  through  life,  so  she  takes  her  time  putting  her  gingerbread  house  together.  perhaps  more  time  than  most,  but  it's  very  important  to  her  that  the  gumdrop  pattern  is  pleasing  to  the  eye.  “what  do  you  think  of  the  blue  and  purple  mints  leading  up  to  the  door  ?”

“okay,  i  definitely  think  we  should  get  something  MATCHING  !  the  snowflakes  are  so  cute,  don't  you  think  ?!”

“ugh,  i  don't  like  any  of  these.”  not  that  she  would  let  anyone  paint  her  face  anyway.  maeve  knows  that  she  would  currently  be  considered  a  grinch,  but  she  swears  she  wasn't  born  this  way.  “you  think  they'd  let  me  borrow  the  paint  and  paint  your  face  ?”
