oc asks that reveal more than you think (AGL 31) #9, 21, 25
You didnât specify so letâs do uhhh Evahl
9. Do they empathize with non-sentient things (dolls, plants, booksâŚ)?
Iâd say no. Besides his necklace, inanimate objects are just things and tools for him.
21. What would it take for them to break up with someone? What would be the last straw?
Hereâs the thing about Evahl: itâd take a LOT. Like a lot a lot. Chances are Evahl isnât going to be doing the breaking up because as long as he still feels kind of attached to the person, heâs not going to end it. Heâll even take the abuse that comes with it and like. Not great? Heâs definitely one of those people who can fall easily into an abusive relationship. The only reason he MIGHT break up with someone is if heâs just plain not interested in them anymore.
25. Safety or possibility?
Well, staying with Matiloâs family for as long as he did was safety, but finally taking off was possibility. He definitely errs on the side of safety, though, because like. It took Matilo prodding him to leave before he actually did that, and now heâs kind of neglecting his goals because heâs afraid of the bad that could come with it.

The crew could still see the flock of Wings dancing in the sunset sky as they settled on the island to stay for a day or two. It wasnât his flock, but Evahl could see the heartbreak in Sheiâs eyes as theyâd bid farewell to the Wings. It was a sharp contrast to the joy theyâd held when he been the first one to spot them, so hopeful that they were his family, then hopeful that they had a Weaver.
But they hadnât, and Sheiâs wings were still clipped.
Evahl could understand Shei wanted to be alone but he couldnât shake the feeling that maybe he shouldnât be alone. Leaving Tilem and the Marked to doze by the fire, Evahl headed up the nearby slope to check on him. He found him sitting crosslegged at the edge of the grassy cliff.
He wished he was surprised that Shei had a knife on hand, positioned above the Mark on his leg. His eyes were squeezed shut, and though his hands shook a bit, he didnât bring down the point.
âDonât do it,â Evahl said. âYou canât go and hurt yourself over this, Shei.â
Shei tensed up and readjusted his grip, his breaths becoming fast and shallow. Evahl didnât like the look of his resolve. Quick as a snake, he grabbed Sheiâs arm. After a bit of a scuffle, Evahl pulled the blade from his fingers and threw it out of reach.
âI just want to fly again!â Shei signed, tears streaming down his face. âI donât need a leg for...â
He stopped to wipe away his tears, only to dissolve into sobs. Much to Evahlâs surprise, Shei slumped into him, whimpering and crying. He almost felt bad to enjoy the closeness when Shei was in the middle of falling apart.
âYa said your flockâs got a Weaver,â Evahl said, leaning into a pile of rocks and taking Shei with him. âWeâll just find âem and youâll get your Mark off. You just gotta wait. No need tâhurt yaself.â
Shei sat up abruptly. âBut then I stay and become the leader.â
Despite the mood, Evahlâs heart soared. âYou donât wanna be the leader?â Sheiâs shoulders went lax and he hung his head. âDo you wanna say with us?â
âI canât.â
âSays who?â Shei stared at him blankly. âIf you donât wanna be the leader...donât.â
âBut itâs my destiny,â he said. âWaweweâs woven this for me. I have to.â
âI, well, uh, well what if...what if it isnât?â he challenged. âWhat do you know about Waweâs plan anyways?â
Shei sighed. âItâs obvious, thatâs how I know. Where else is my fate going to take me? Mattâs gone, so I have to lead the flock instead.â
âBut I think the obvious thing can be, just, yâknow, whatâcha want. Thatâs the obvious thing, donâtâcha think?â
âAnd what am I going to do staying with the crew?!â Sheiâs sharp movements put his anger into his signs, making Evahl shrink away. âWeâre a bunch of criminals and outcasts! Whereâs the destiny in that?! How can that ever be what Wawewe wants?â
Shei grabbed Evahlâs necklace, gave it a shake, then dropped it. âThis is your destiny, but youâre trying to ignore it. I canât do that, though. My flock--â
Evahl took his arms, pulling him nose to nose. âThen come with me! You getâcha wings back and weâre faster than the ship, you in the air, me in the water. You can be a part of my fate!â
âThatâs not the way in front of me,â Shei said, pushing Evahl away and sliding onto the grass. âWawewe has a plan for me, and youâre not a part of it. Just like she has a plan for you, and Iâm not a part of that either. Weâre just ships passing by in opposite directions.â
âAnd you think thatâs a part of her plan?â Evahl snapped. âJoining the damn crew, making friends, then never seeing âem again, is that it?!â
âShe led me to you so you could help me get home.â
âThen why send you to the fucking zoo in the first place?â
âI donât know!â Shei covered his eyes, letting out a whimper. âI donât know what she wants.â
âThen why...â Evahl growled. âNever mind. Youâre just gonna take me in circles. You coulda just said you donât wanna stay with us.â
He turned away so he wouldnât have to see what Shei was saying. Shei whistled at him, then put a hand on his shoulder, but Evahl shrugged him off with a warning snarl. Finally, he left.
Evahl buried his face in his arms to hide his damp eyes from the rising moon.
For Evahl! 3. Whoâs on speed dial? 7. Whatâs the best advice theyâve ever received? 9. Whatâs one physical detail theyâd change about themselves? 21. Your character is charged with a crime they did commit. What was the crime? 28. Your character is burdened with an inconvenient superpower. What is it? 35. Whatâs the one thing theyâve always wanted to do? Why havenât they done it yet? 46. What controversial belief or view does your character hold? Why? Do they hide it?
3. Whoâs on speed dial?Â
In a modern, human AU, Evahl would have Shei on speed dial and he would keep trying to call him and Shei would text him back like. Are you an idiot???? I canât speak??? But Evahl hates texting his fingers are too big and he misspells everything so itâs easy to forget.
He also has Tilem and Matilo on speed dial, Tilem so he can call her up when his feelings are hurt and Matilo because those two will gossip for hours on the phone itâs ridiculous. Like four in the morning calling each other because one of them heard that Katie and Julie just broke up ridiculous.
7. Whatâs the best advice theyâve ever received?Â
Prolly from Matilo, who basically just told Evahl to do whatever the hell he wants and not to be bound by something as silly as fate. Later on heâs gonna get some good advice from Tilem too, but first those two have to get over their issues with each other haha.
9. Whatâs one physical detail theyâd change about themselves?
Mm, Iâm not sure? Because Evahlâs not actually all that put out by his vitiligo, heâs kinda proud that it sets him apart, that heâs ânot like the other Serpents.â He might wish he had legs from time to time, though, just for ease of access and so he could be just a bit smaller. Being the biggest damn thing on the ship tends to make him the number one target.
21. Your character is charged with a crime they did commit. What was the crime?Â
Besides being an escaped slave? Probably something like public indecency. Iâm still on the fence on whether Evahl would ever straight up eat a human, but maybe that?
28. Your character is burdened with an inconvenient superpower. What is it?
Most superpowers have a bit of inconvenience to them, Iâd think. In the context of this world, though, I think the ability to see branching timelines would be HELLA inconvenient, because youâre suddenly being faced with the things that could have been, and fate and Waweweâs power starts to seem a little more flimsy. Really, itâs just asking for a crisis, and itâs definitely not one that Evahl needs.
35. Whatâs the one thing theyâve always wanted to do? Why havenât they done it yet?Â
Find his parents! But heâs kinda holding himself back partially because he wants to stay with the Marked and he doesnât think she and Tilem would be down for looking for MORE Serpents and also I guess just. Heâs scared that heâs wrong about them. Heâs scared that they really DIDNâT want him, or that maybe the necklace wasnât even theirs and heâs got his hopes up for nothing.
46. What controversial belief or view does your character hold? Why? Do they hide it?
Evahlâs somewhat of the opinion that fate shouldnât matter as much and, as far as controversial opinions go in this world, thatâs about the most controversial you can freaking get. He doesnât really voice it because thereâs a lot of evidence supporting that fate is a thing and he doesnât really know how to argue that maybe it doesnât have to be. Basically, he doesnât have the words to get his feelings across and counter the usual arguments, so he decides itâs easier to avoid that would-be fight altogether.
âHalf the time I get too embarrassed to say anything.â from the sentence starters! <3
Featuring Evahl being a mess and Shei being oblivious! Kinda took liberties with the wording of the prompt, but I swear itâs in there.

Evahl was avoiding him again, but in that way where he was trying not to seem obvious about it. Except on a ship this small, it was pretty fucking obvious.
Shei wondered what it was this time. Maybe because heâd kept fumbling words during their reading practice, and he was ashamed? Embarrassed because heâd fallen into some barrels when Shei had whistled for him earlier? Heâd been a bit clumsy lately, but Shei didnât see the problem. He always felt clumsy and uncoordinated when he was on the ground instead of the air, but he wasnât about to waste time being embarrassed about it.
He whistled for Evahl when he spotted the Serpent draped over the front of the ship, tail dragging in the water as he sunbathed. He scrambled into a sitting position as Shei walked over, trying to make himself look busy.
âBad time, Snack!â he laughed. ââBout to go fishing.â
âBullshit,â Shei signed, a flat look on his face.
Evahl sputtered. âYou donât know that.â
âYou were just sunbathing.â
âYeah, uh, yeah, building up. Energy. Didja know Serpents are part plant? Need that there sunlight, châknow?â
He raised an eyebrow. âIs that why your kind live in the dark?â
âYâŚYessssâŚ?â He grinned.
Shei rolled his eyes. âIf youâre embarrassed about earlier, donât be.â
Evahlâs face blanked. âEarlier?â
He nodded. âThe reading. I taught my brother how to read too and he messed up way more than you.â
âOh.â Evahl folded his arms across his chest, sinking back down to the floor of the ship. âYeah, uh. Yeah, yâknow, you go and git yourself in a knot over one thing and suddenly youâre just too damn embarrassed to git anyâa the damn words out, châknow?â
Shei smiled and shrugged. âSure, kinda.â
Evahl bared his top teeth at him. âYeah, yeah, you go anâ sign allâa damn time, âcourse you donât have problems with it.â
Shei hesitated, tapping the backs of his fingers against his palms. âI did use to talk as a kid, actually.â
He cocked his head. âOh yeah? You have a cute voice?â
âDunno, I was just a kid. Probably?â
âHuh. So whyâd ya stop?â
He shrugged. âI think I got freaked out because my parents kept telling me not to tell each other and the flock certain things, so I justâŚâ
âStopped talking altogether,â Evahl finished, his expression settling into something a little more terse. âThey made ya afraidâa talking?â
âSeems like that, doesnât it?â
âWhole lot shittier than being too embarrassed to talk.â
âI donât remember much about it. Itâs no big deal. Speaking by hand has its perks anyways.â
âSure does. Iâll learn it someday.â
âWhy donât you master reading first?â
Evahl scoffed. âYeah, yeah, whatever. Got a pretty okay teacher, so Iâll get there.â He grinned and leaned in. âYouâd be perfect if ya didnât smell so damn good, always distracting me.â
âYouâre the one who usually makes the distractions,â he retorted.
âOh sure. Just be careful, why donâtâcha, or Iâll go anâ eat you up in my sleep by accident. Wouldnât that be a damn shame?â
âYouâd miss me too much.â
Evahl seemed to choke on his laugh. âHa, yeah, you, uh, you keep telling yaself that, Snack.â He wheezed a little, covering his mouth with his hand. âFuck, I oughta, hh, fish? Ya, gotta fish now. Gotta bring in supper! Talk to ya later, Snack!â
Heâd splashed into the water before Shei could protest, leaving him looking over the edge just in time to see Evahlâs patchy tail disappear beneath the ship. Confused by his abrupt departure, he couldnât help but feel like maybe theyâd gone right back to square one.
Me: Iâm not going to write angst I donât know the characters well enough
Me: -writes this anyways-
âShh, shhâŚâ
âJust get âem fucking offâa me!â
Shei placed a hand over Evahlâs mouth, bidding quiet fromhim. Â The Serpent relaxed into his hand, but he was still moving around, making it that much harder to pull away the chainswrapped around him.
This run-in with the armies of Wawenui had been the mostdisastrous yet.  The Marked had beencapturedâŚor rather sheâd given herself up, giving the rest of them a chance toget Evahl away. Heâd been caught up in one of Wawenuiâs traps, and it was only the distraction of the Markâs capture that allowed them to get him away.
Shei felt bad that he wasnât as upset about the Markedâscapture as Tilem and Evahl were. Â AndMatilo, well, they still didnât know the rest of the crew that well, so atleast they had an excuse.
âWhy arenât they offâa me?!â Evahl snapped.
This time Matilo slid their hand over his cheek. Â âWeâre doing our best, Evahl, but youâremoving and that ainât making it easy on us.â
Shei glared at Matiloâs hand, sitting on Evahl like areplacement. Â He knew they werenât reallya replacement. Â What would they even bereplacing? Â He huffed at himself andmoved further down Evahlâs body, looking for a place where he might be able toloosen his bindings.
âQuieter,â Tilem hissed. Sheâd flattened herself to the crate she was sitting on, ears down. Â âI hear something.â
They obeyed, only cutting the silence with the rustle ofchains. Â Shei ran his fingers over themetal bindings, wincing whenever a wave of water hit the boat. Â Any sound felt like a threat right now.
He raised his head when he heard something whistling throughthe air.
The cannonball slammed into the side of the ship, rocking ithard enough that Matilo was pitched against the side and Shei was thrown to thedeck. Â His head swam with the rush ofpanic, sounds of confused yells and cracking woodâcracking wood? Â He got himself up on elbows just in time tosee Evahl crash through the deck with a terrified shout.
Next Shei knew he was standing by the hole Evahl had made. Â Heâd crashed through the bottom of the shipand begun to sink. Â He didnât even rememberstanding up and neither did he realize his split second decision to tear offhis shirt and dive into the water until he felt the shock of it on his skin.
For a second, it was peace. The chaos above wasnât too far but it was so muffled that it might aswell have been across the Basin. Â Sheiswam down, but he couldnât swim faster than Evahl was sinking.
The Serpent hit the bottom before Shei caught up. Through the stirred up sand he ran his handsover the chains to find a break, no easy task with the way Evahl wasstruggling.  Finally he grabbed Evahlâsface, forcing him to look him in the eye. Evahl features were the picture of fear, but they went lax as Shei ran athumb over his cheek, silently begging him to calm down, let him help.  At that, Evahl went still, and he could work.
Shei had one advantage: a respiratory system that could takea beating, as it was made to handle the rush of air in flight and in dive. Â He could hold his breath for a long time butit didnât seem to be enough. Â He couldfind a place to loosen the chains. Â His lungswere starting to scream for air.
Instead he searched the sandy bottom, rippled by waveactivity, for something to use. Â He wasstarting to feel lightheaded when he found a bayonet. Â Unfortunately he found the point, sending upa cloud of blood, but he wouldnât let a little pain stop him.
He chose a link near Evahlâs shoulder, one that hadnât beenwelded shut properly, and wedged the tip into the seam of the link to beginprying it apart. Â His vision narrowed toa tunnel, muscles screaming at him to slow down and stop, but it was startingto give.
The bayonet became useless, and the seam was wide open, butthe links were too tight to pull it out. Shei smacked his hand on it in frustration, slumping into Evahl now thathis strength had run dry. Â He wasnâtconscious enough to realize that Evahl had started struggling again, not evenwhen a strong arm wrapped around his middle.
Then he hit air. Â Hesucked in a huge breath, coughing and gasping, painful but so, so sweet.
Evahl was all over him, pushing his hair out of his eyes, water away from his face. Â âYouâre okay, snack, youâre gonna be okay, just breathe, you got water in ya? Â Didja get water in ya?â Â Shei managed a shake of his head. Â Evahl yanked him into a tight hug, hand onthe back of his head. Â âOh fuck. Â Wawe was watching up, Shei. Â She was looking out for our dumb asses thistime.â
It was the nicest hug heâd ever gotten, which was weirdbecause heâd gotten a lot of hugs that didnât involve cold, slimy man eatersand near death experiences. Â He wrappedhis arms around Evahlâs head and held on for dear life.
It was tempting to forget what was going on around them, butthe sound of a ship fire couldnât be ignored. He opened his eyes, squinting in the bright light of the flames theirship had gone up in. Â The Markedâs sloopwas gone, and he didnât even want to think about what had happened to the restof their crew.

Okay so I have somewhat polished that drabble I did about Shei and Evahl and Iâm starting to feel more comfortable with their relationship and how they interact and just their voice in general (I tried another drabble with Evahl and the Marked before and I just couldnât get their voices -_-)
Anyways here is about 2000 words about Evahl breaking Shei out of the zoo he was stuck in, all because he took one look at this skinny asshole and fell madly in love with him.
Tag List: @unpickingthetangles @bewarethemarbar @mbscully @ravenpuffwriter @eggybirch @i-rove-rock-n-roll @transmansharkboy @rusty-sky-cat @terminal0eternity @kaligulas @i-doled @pyrrhicdreamer @gettingitwrite If you want to be added or removed, let me know!
The zoo wasnât bad. It wasnât great but it wasnât, well, it wasnât terrible. Â It was a whole lot less pressure, Shei thought, to be watched by passersby than be hounded and berated by his flock and family about the matters of leadership. He knew he was unfit for it. Â They didnât need to rub it in.
Though he at least wished he had more room in here. Â He wished it wasnât so artificial. Â He wished he could do more than flutter up onto the rocks and ledges dotting the exhibit. But the burning Mark that encircled his ankle kept his wings clipped, ensuring that he would never fly properly again.
That thought felt like bile burning down his throat, curdling in his stomach like a bad fish. Â He looked at the Mark now, illuminated in the moonlight as he lay across the rocks in the centre of the exhibit. Â It was scarred up from his scratching, but the Weaver whoâd spun it had woven it deep. Â Short of losing a leg, the Mark was with him for life.
He couldnât be a leader if he couldnât fly, could he?  Unless the Flockâs Weaver knew how to undo Marks.  But then that would mean he would have to be leader.  Leader or flight, leader or flightâŚ
Shei sat bolt upright when a horn blasted from elsewhere in the zoo. Â Heâd only ever heard it during the one or two drills theyâd run during the months heâd spent here, but never in the dead of night. Â What was happening?
He stood up on his tip toes to try to see past the rails of his exhibit, but all he could catch were the flitting shadows of some of the pirates running past. Â He couldnât quite make out what they were yelling about either. With a growl of frustration, he paced the length of his rock.
Someone close by shrieked and fell into the exhibit, going still and quiet too fast to be alive. Shei scanned the ledge again. Still nothing.
His eyes roamed the exhibit, settling on a tumble of rocks near the wall. Â It was the only place he could plausibly get out, but he would struggle to pull himself over once he got up, enough time for someone to come along and beat him back down. Â Maybe amid the chaos, he had a chance.
Without a chance to hesitate, he took a running start and leapt up the rocks, wings up to catch as much wind as possible. Â He leapt, arms outstretched for the wall. Â He collided awkwardly with it, scraping his knees, but it was worth the injury when he managed to hook his fingers over the lip. Â With powerful beats of his wings to give him a boost, he got his elbows over the edge.
His luck ran out, though, as he looked up into the dark eyes of the reason the alarm was blaring. Â The Serpentâs teeth were bared and glinting in the pale moonlight. Â Shei stared at it, unable get the thought to his arms to let go and get the hell away from it.
Fortunately, it wasnât eating him. Â Just staring. Shei tried to take back his mind from the fear, but the Serpent unfroze first. Â It grabbed one of Sheiâs arms and pulled him over the ledge, throwing him over its shoulder. Â Stunned, Shei didnât even think to struggle, and didnât think he could get enough of a grip to struggle what with how cool and slimy its skin was.
At least he wasnât being eaten. Â He didnât know why he wasnât being eaten. Â That was all Serpents did, eat and kill, generally all in one sitting. Why wasnât he being eaten? Â Unless it was just taking him some place safe to eat him, thatâs what it was. Â Itâd broken into the zoo looking for a snack and he was the snack.
That was a thought good enough to spurn him into action, squirming and flapping his wings. Â And he nearly got away, too, but the Serpent tightened its grip, reining him back. Â It even took a second to adjust its grip around his wings (he cringed, waiting for the crunch of bone, but it was shockingly gentle with him).
âStop wrigglinâ, yâlil hen, Iâm tryna save ya,â it snapped.
Serpents could speak?! And did it say it was saving him? Â What did that mean?
At first he thought knew why, when he looked down at the Mark on the back of the Serpentâs shoulder. Â Had someone sent it to come get him? Â Was that why itâd been staring at him so intensely earlier?
No, it was deactivated, no longer hot to the touch, probably disrupted by whatever had put that nasty scar through it. Â If no one was giving it orders, then why was it here? Â What was it doing?
Didnât matter, though, he had other things piling on his plate. Â He spotted one of the pirates who owned the zoo when they rounded the corner behind them, readying their musket. Â Shei tapped the Serpentâs face, getting it to turn and see the pirate.
âPut down that Wing, you damn pest!â the pirate yelled. Â âThat ainât yours!â
The Serpent snorted. Â With a swing of its tail, it slammed the pirate into the rail edging a different exhibit. Â A shot went off before they toppled over, making Shei flinch. Â Fortunately, it hadnât hit him, and the Serpent was moving again so it couldnât have hit it either.
Shei craned his neck, realizing they were headed to the back of the zoo. It was quieter back here, but there was no way out. Â But then again, it was a Serpent.
He yelped when he was plopped on the ground in front of the beast. Â It squinted at him, like it was trying to figure out something about him. Â When it leaned in, big sharp teeth a little too close for comfort, Shei turned to run. The Serpent caught him and yanked him back.
âNo, down there, hen,â it sneered, pointing into the exhibit they were standing beside.
Shei followed his finger into the waterlogged cage, home to a couple of water puppies, to the very back. Â The bars over the pipe where the exhibit river escaped had been bent out of shape. It certainly didnât look big enough for the blubbery Serpent to have squeezed through, though.
âCâmon, hen, git down there,â the Serpent snapped, giving him a light shove. âIâm lettinâ ya use them damn wings for something, so go on anâ use âem.â
He knew it was a bad idea as soon as he climbed onto the rail. Â He hadnât glided down from a distance like this yet, and he sorely misjudged how damn hard it was to brake when he had less feathers to do it with. Â The bliss of flight was quickly replaced by the sting of a clumsy crash landing.
He flapped his wings to try to dry them off after tumbling into the stream. The Serpent caught up, eyeing him with a sniff. Â âThought youâd be better at that.â
âI canât fly!â he signed, quick movements as sharp as the look he gave.
He raised a wing to show the Serpent his clipped feathers, but it gave him a blank look. Â What was he even doing? Â Of course it wouldnât understand it was a Serpent for crying out loud. Â And even if it was smart, what would it know about wings?
âGood thing you donât need ta fly ta get outta here,â it said. Â âGit in the pipe.â
Shei flapped his wings a couple more times in a last attempt to dry them off before folding them. Â Wet feathers on bare skin made him shiver, reminding him that he didnât have any clothes. Heâd gotten a little too used to nudity while at the zoo.
âSo yâainât deaf,â the Serpent said, squeezing into the pipe after him, âbutâcha ainât talking none either. Â You gotâcha throat messed up or something?â
He whistled a no, since it was too dark for a shake of the head.
âHuh. Â Weird. It from a Mark?â
The questions were getting him paranoid, fingers twitching. Â âNope.â
âButâcha can talk, then, but donâtâŚ?â
Shei slammed his fist into the wall of the pipe, about as close to a shut up as he could get.
The Serpent grumbled. Â âAâight, there, just curious.â
After some time, they emerged at the other end of the pipe (the bars here were also bent out of shape) onto a private cove. Â There was a sloop at the coveâs entrance. Â Was it the Serpentâs or did it belong to someone else?
Shei turned to the Serpent as it was pulling its fat body through the bars. âWhy did you get me out?â
It frowned at him.  âUhâŚâ
Shei wrinkled his nose. Â âIs it because Iâm royalty? Â Who sent you?â
âYeah, that,â it said quickly.  âRoyalty. We, uh, got hired toâŚsave you.â
âBy who?â he demanded.
It shrugged. Â âI ainât the captain.â
He rolled his eyes. Â âGuess that should have been obvious.â
Wrong move. Â He fell backwards and scrambled away when the Serpent lunged at him. Â He threw his arms up, eyes shut, and goosebumps running the length of his arms when he felt the Serpentâs hot breath on him.
âWhat?â it snarled. Â âCus Iâm a Serp, is that right? Â Well?!â Shei peered through his arms, but all he could see were teeth. Â âWe ainât all stupid people eaters, just like you Wings ainât all flighty, wishy washy bastards.â
Shei nodded vigorously. Â The Serpent backed off a little.
âIâm Evahl, by the way,â he said.
âIâm Shei,â he signed, then spelled it out. Â Halfway through, the Serpent was already shaking his head.
âNever learned how to spell,â he said. Â âThink before you comment on that, by the way.â
Shei tapped his fingers into his palm, thinking. Â âThe beginning of shoe, and the end of stay.â
âSoâŚShei?â  He nodded. Evahl grinned.  âCute name, hen.â
He scowled. Â âDonât call me hen.â
âFeathers?â he suggested, to which Shei crossed his arms. Â âDrumstick? Â Chicken wing? Snack?â Â He licked his lips. Â âHow about dinner?â
Shei shot him a withering look. Â âThis is all a trick to eat me, isnât it?â
âIf I wanted ta eatâcha, snack, donâtâcha think Iâdâve done it by now?â He was looming again. Â âCanât help looking delicious, though, can ya?â
This was the weirdest Serpent heâd ever met. Â Not that heâd ever met any, besides brief glimpses at dead bodies. He even looked weird. Â All the Serpents heâd seen were dark through and through, but this oneâs skin was interrupted by almost white patches. Â They were on his hands and fingers, around his eyes and armpits, and seemed to stretch outwards from his middle, both in the front and the back.
Then he spotted the gunshot wound in Evahlâs side, oozing thick, greenish blue blood. Â He waved his hands, pointing it out to him. Â The Serpent appraised it with mild interest.
âThought something was stinging,â he said, grabbing a handful of fat around the wound. Â âShit, bulletâs still in there. Â Thatâs a pain.â
âShouldnât you be more concerned?â Shei said.
âI would be if I was all skin and bone like you,â he retorted, still poking at the wound. Â âOr was a Wing. Â You things are damn fragile compared to Serps. Â This is gonna sting in the water. Â Ah well, letâs go.â
He slid over to the water, but Shei stopped at the edge, thinking about waterlogged wings and cloying liquid. Â About drowning. Â Heâd had enough of that after the storm.
âWhat are you waiting for?â Evahl said from the water.
âI donât like water.â
âI thought Wings dived to get food!â  Shei shrugged.  âYouâre shitting me.  And you canât damn well flyâŚfine.  Get on my back.â
âSo you can help me drown?â he retorted.
âI havenât killed you yet, have I?!â Â Shei glared. Â âYou know if I kill you youâre just going to haunt me until Iâve fulfilled your fate, right? This is a win-win for you.â
âThereâs no win about dying.â
âIâm just saying I donât want your annoying ass in my face for the rest of my life.â Â Shei crossed his arms. Â âJust git over here. Â I ainât gonna drown ya.â
It wasnât like he could get off the cove any other way. Â And he certainly didnât want to be sitting on a beach naked either. Â The pirates would find him eventually. Â He gave in and slumped over to Evahl, crawling onto his back and hooking his arms around his neck to be taken to the ship.
