#Nixon50 #OTD 1/24/1970 President Nixon awarded conductor and musician Eugene Ormandy with the Presidential Medal of Freedom at the Philadelphia Academy of Music. Born Jenő Blau in 1899, Eugene Ormandy was born in Budapest, Hungary. He was a child protégé who performed his first violin concerts at seven years old. Ormandy immigrated to the United States in 1921. His 44-year career with the Philadelphia Orchestra began in 1936.
