#OTD 8/14/1970 – President Nixon presented Sen. Allen Ellender (D-LA) proclaimed the Senator “Chef Supreme” in recognition of the bipartisan gumbo luncheon at the Capitol Building prepared and hosted by Sen. Ellender the previous month.
Senator Ellender was an enthusiastic amateur chef whose love for his state's cuisine helped bring Louisiana Creole and Cajun dishes like gumbo, jambalaya, and New Orleans pralines into the American mainstream.
