#OTD 8/11/1969 – The White House released a statement from President Nixon on plans to reimagine the Office of Economic Opportunity (OEO) with an emphasis on research and development of social programs. #OTD 8/6/1971 – President Nixon signed the Second Annual Report of the Council on Environmental Quality (CEQ). The CEQ was created by the National Environmental Policy Act of 1969. It is a group within the Executive Office of the President whose purpose is to coordinate “the federal government’s efforts to improve, preserve, and protect America’s public health and environment.” (Image: WHPO-6966-08A)

#OTD 8/4/1971 – President Nixon, First Lady Pat Nixon, daughter Tricia Nixon Cox, and son-in-law Edward Cox went to an evening performance of the musical “No, No, Nanette” starring Ruby Keeler at the 46th Street Theatre in New York City. The President signed autographs during the intermission, met the cast after the performance, and stopped to shake hands with some of the crowd outside the theatre. (Images: WHPO-6934-19A & 20A)

#OTD 8/3/1972 – President Nixon met retired professional athlete Ollie Matson and his family in the Oval Office. The occasion of the visit to the White House was for the President to congratulate Mr. Matson on his nomination for membership in the Pro Football Hall of Fame. He is also in the College Football Hall of Fame. In addition to his career in football, Matson won two Olympic medals for track and field events in the 1952 Olympic Games held in Helsinki, Finland. #OTD 7/30/1973 – President Nixon met in the Oval Office with Prime Minister of Australia Edward Gough Whitlam. At the height of a constitutional crisis in 1975, Whitlam became the only prime minister to be dismissed from office by a governor-general of Australia. (Image: WHPO-E1276-08)
