⁣ Samsung Galaxy Note 10+⁣ Taken on 08/07/2020.⁣ ⁣ Étroubles, the tiny capital of 'la Valle del Gran San Bernardo' ('the Great Saint Bernard Valley'), is listed as one of Italy's prettiest villages.⁣ ⁣ The Latin name of the village was 'Stipulae' (straw), referring to the straw left on the ground after the wheat harvest. Up until the 1960s it was possible to admire billowing expanses of wheat and rye fields dotted with red poppies and blue cornflowers. The name 'Étroubles' may come from the Aosta Valley patois word (a French–Provençal dialect) 'etrobla', meaning 'fields covered with straw'.⁣ ⁣ The sight of the cobbled streets, the drinking troughs where the fresh water of Monte Vélan flows, the refurbished houses made with the stones coming from the area and roofs made of lose (slabs of stone) in keeping with local architectural tradition, makes Étroubles not only a place of history, but of charm and beauty.⁣ ⁣ What I love most about Étroubles is how the village (and the mountains for that matter) manages to survive without degenerating and giving way to invasive tourism. Also, the green spaces, meadows and the alpine pastures are all well kept, and there are always flowers to be seen hanging from the balconies. ⁣ Canon EOS 250D | 20mm | 1/15s | f/8 | ISO 100 {Photo 1}⁣ Canon EOS 250D | 18mm | 1/25s | f/8 | ISO 100 {Photo 2}⁣ Both taken on 08/07/2020.⁣ ⁣ The small medieval village of Étroubles is located at an altitude of 1270 metres in the beautiful Alpine setting of 'la Valle del San Gran Bernardo' ('the Great Saint Bernard Valley') surrounded by forests and green pastures.⁣ ⁣ The hamlet was already known in Roman times as 'Restopolis', since it is located on the ancient 'Via delle Gallie', the consular road to the 'Alpis Poenina', which is today's Gran San Bernardo pass.⁣ ⁣ Even today, Étroubles is an important center since it is set on the Via Francigena, the important route that in the Middle Ages connected the British Isles to Rome and Jerusalem, used by many pilgrims.⁣ ⁣ The best time to visit Étroubles, in my opinion, is either in the winter when the village is covered in snow and the streets and windows are lit with lanterns and candles, much like a traditional Italian 'presepe' or nativity scene — or in summer when the flowers are hanging outside the wooden houses ready to welcome visitors old and new.⁣ ⁣ This arch doorway was so welcoming that I felt the urge to have a quick look inside and, wow, it was something special indeed. No wonder the village is classified as one of the most beautiful in the Aosta Valley — the other being Bard.⁣ ⁣ 𝗛𝗼𝘄 𝘁𝗼 𝗴𝗲𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗲:⁣ ⁣ Étroubles is reached by bus ('SAVDA') from Aosta Monday to Saturday.
