Welcome to Puglia, which has been conquered by just about everyone, from the Byzantine Greeks to the Romans, the Arabs and the Bourbons. The heel of Italy's Boot has a microclimate that ensures sunny weather for much of the year; certainly from April to October it is at least warm enough to wander around without a jacket. 'Il solleone', the so-called lion sun, and a fertile land allow Puglia to grow intensely flavoured olives, fruit and vegetables in abundance. As such, it produces much of Europe's pasta, presses most of Italy's olive oil, catches the bulk of the country's fish and makes plenty of good, strong wine—enough, in fact, to be the sixth biggest wine-making region in the world. Wonderful white-washed towns and villages are abound, too: Locorotondo, Martina Franca, Putignano and the instagramable Alberobello to name but a few. To see the Itria Valley at its most glorious, I'd recommend strolling along the 'belvedere' in Locorotondo where you'll see Martina Franca in the distance.
