Born on St. Thomas in what is now the U.S. Virgin Islands, Camille Pissarro was in many ways the linchpin of the French Impressionist movement, being the only person to take part in all eight Impressionist exhibitions between 1874 and 1886. Pissarro was keenly interested in the realities of French rural life, and many of his canvases portray peasants conversing, washing their feet, or carrying out everyday tasks. His style is distinguished by consummate handling of shades of green that creates the illusion of lush foliage.
