Adam was in the dream, too; he traced the tangled pattern of the ink with his finger. He said, “Scio quid hoc est.” As we traced it father and father down on the bare skin of Ronan’s back, Ronan himself disappeared entirely, and the tattoo got smaller and smaller. It was a Celtic knot the size of a wafer, and then Adam, who had become Kavinsky, said, “Scio quid estis vos.” He put the tattoo in his mouth and swallowed it.

Ronan woke with a start, ashamed and euphoric.

The euphoria wore off long before the shame did.

*drops a bucket of ice water on my head* so anyways.... this is gay af. Alright, Alright lets just take a moment to scream about the the trk parallel *SCRAMS* Okay so clearly erotic. Adam says ‘I know what this is’ which I think has more too do with magic stuff then gay stuff. Kavinsky says his patent ‘I know what you are’ which is both magic and gay stuff. I wonder if Ronan was ever really attracted to K or if it was just the excitement of someone understanding him. either way the dream STARTED as Adam, Adam TOUCHING him and ended with K. He never stood a chance. 

He wondered if Kavinsky was gay. He wondered if he should go to the Fourth of July party. He wondered where Adam had gone. (ch. 54) (Ronan POV)

IS KAVINSKY GAY? GEE I WONDER. ALSO WHAT’S ADAM UP TOO. ffs. You are about to meet a hit man can you please get it the hell together. I facepalm every damn time at this. 

But now, he knew all at once what he was hurrying for. They were restoring the ley line for Cabeswater. They were restoring it now because Ronan was going to need it. Tonight. Hurry. (ch. 58) (Adam POV)

THIS CONNECTION THING GIVES ME SO MUCH LIFE YOU DON’T UNDERSTAND. 

“You didn’t say you don’t swing that way”

Ronan was silent. Thunder growled under his feet. “No, I didn’t.” (ch. 61) (Ronan POV)

*RUNS SCREAMING INTO THE NIGHT* I’LL NEVER GET TIRED OF THIS. I KNOW IT’S NOT TECHNICALLY A PYNCH SCENE BUT STILL. VERY IMPORTANT. God, him just confirming it was so wonderful. The entire scene is so great. I still can’t believe K thought Ronan was in love with Gansey though. HAVE YOU NOT LAID EYES ON ADAM PARRISH. The best part about this is that it just settles something in Ronan. He doesn’t lie and that includes himself. 

Ronan head a scream, far away. It was from outside his dream. Sleep was collapsing around him.

“Hurry,” Persephone advised.

Adam looked up at Ronan. “I know it was you,” He said. “I figured it out. The rent.”

He held Ronan’s gaze for just a moment longer, until something inside Ronan unwound and he almost said something. (ch. 61)

I high key want to die. Adam knew and said nothing. He knew and he let it go. He didn’t get angry or upset or anything. He looked at Ronan. The goddamn world is burning and he just LOOKS at him for a minute longer then he should. And that look makes Ronan want to spill his heart out. ‘something inside Ronan unwound and he ALMOST said something.’ That’s it. Just like that the world flipped over and their relationship was on a new path. 

Ronan’s second secret was Adam Parrish. Adam was different since making the bargain with Cabeswater. Stronger, stranger, farther away. It was hard not to stare at the odd and elegant lines of his face. (Epilogue) (Ronan POV)

I love that once Ronan decided ‘yeah, Adam Parrish is hot as fuck and I want a piece’ he just ran away with waxing lyrics about him. The sad part though is that he decides he’s just NEVER going to tell him how he feels. :/

“What’s the next step, then?” Gansey asked warily. It was hard to tell if he was wary of Adam or wary of the cavern.

Adam said, “Make it safer.”

He glanced at Ronan, eyebrows furrowed, as if sensing Ronan’s eyes on him. Ronan looked away. (Epilogue)

Ah. And so our torture begins. This is like, the perfect segue to BLLB. Ronan being obvious and Adam noticing but not saying anything about it. Losers. 

-and he was the boy with the most beautifully interesting car and the most savagely handsome of friends, Ronan Lynch. (ch. 15) (Adam POV)

Adam has a lot going on like, you know, seeing dead people and freaking out is maybe girlfriend but it’s nice of him to take a sec to hate-admire Gansey and to let us know Ronan is still hot. 

Ronan leapt out of the car and slammed the door. The thing about Ronan Lynch, Adam had discovered, was that he wouldn’t- or couldn’t- express himself with words. So every emotion had to be spelled out in some other way. A fist, a fire, a bottle. Now Cabeswater was missing and the Pig was hobbled, and he needed to go have a silent shouting fit with his body. In the back window, Adam saw Ronan pick up a rock from the side of the road and hurl it into the creeper. (ch. 16) (Adam POV)

CAN WE TALK ABOUT THIS AND THE TRK??? oh. I guess not. well, for those of you who have read it *waves hands* *points aggressively* Ronan Lynch talks with his body. HIS. BODY. and Adam freakin’ Parrish knows it. God, this takes Unsubtle Ronan Lynch to another level. No wonder Adam knew in BLLB. Also can we talk about that it was only a few months ago that Adam was saying he didn’t understand Ronan at all? And now he’s telling us he knows just how Ronan ‘talks’. Amazing. *whispers* p.s. a fist, a fire, a bottle? haha jokes on you Parrish. 

Some time later, after Noah had discreetly disappeared, Declan’s Volvo glided up, as quiet as the Pig was loud. Ronan said, “Move up, move up” to Blue until she scooted the passenger seat far enough for him to clamber behind it into the backseat. He hurriedly sprawled back in the seat, throwing one jean-covered leg over the top of Adam’s and laying his head in a posture of thoughtless abandon. By the time Declan arrived at the driver’s side window, Ronan looked as if he had been asleep for days.

“Lucky I was able to get away,” Declan said. He peered into the car, eyes passing over Blue and snagging on Ronan in the backseat. His gaze followed his brother’s leg to where it rested on top of Adam’s, and his expression tightened. (ch. 16)

I think about this scene all the time. All. The. Time. I have... questions?? First I want to point out how Unchill my son is. what a freakin’ noddle. Okay now my questions: Ronan is actually pretty careful about touching anyone in general (excluding Matthew of course) so why throw his leg over Adam’s? Isn’t that kind of pointed? Wouldn’t it seem strange to the other as well as Declan? Also, why was Declan so focused on that? Why did his expression thighten? Does that mean he know’s Ronan is gay? HOW??? RONAN WONT EVEN HAVE THAT CONVERSATION WITH HIMSELF?! AND WHY WOULD IT BOTHER DECLAN IF HE WAS? AND WHY IS RONAN TRYING TO SHOVE THAT IN DECLAN’S FACE IF HE CAN’T EVEN SHOVE IT IN HIS OWN FACE? who has answers? give them to me please. 

Oh and why does Adam not do or say anything? Doesn’t shove Ronan off doesn’t shoot him a questioning look, doesn’t ask why or what is going on. hmmm

Because Adam was the horror now. The teeth were something else, Adam was something else, he was a creature, close enough to touch. To think about it was to become immobilized with the horror of watching Adam be consumed from the inside out. Ronan couldn’t even tell where the mask was now; there was only Adam, the monster, a toothful king. (ch.17) (Ronan POV)

Ronan’s dreams terrify me because of how dark his subconscious presents things. It translates his fear of Adam giving himself up to Cabeswater like this. :(

Adam seized Ronan’s neck, fingers hooked in his skin. Ronan could not kill him, no matter how much Orphan Girl begged. It was Adam. (ch. 17)

RONAN!!!!!! I DON’T EVEN HAVE TO EXPLAIN THIS MY GOD. 

Surely he would wake up soon and find himself again exiled in Monmouth Manufacturing or in the backseat of his car or lying on the floor beside Adam’s bed at St. Agnes. (ch. 19) (Ronan POV)

Hey guys, remember the first time you read this and the record player in your head scratched because WAIT ONE GOSH DARN MINUTE THERE PARTNER. I want to know the first night it happened. Did Ronan go to the church to sleep per usual only to realize Adam now lived there and he took himself to his door? Or did he go to Adam’s door FIRST. OR DID GANSEY ADAM FIND HIM. hmm. 

[Ronan trashing the Barns]

“Were you just going to stand there?”

“Yeah,” replied Adam.

“Decent of you,” Gansey said.

There was no heat in Adam’s reply. “I can’t kill his demons.” (ch. 20) (Ronan POV)

:( First there was no way Adam was going to jump in there. Violence is not  something he can take on voluntarily. I just really like that statement in general. It feels like foreshadowing almost. It’s saying that Adam can’t heal Ronan and vice versa because they each got to go it alone. These demons leave inside them. Inside Ronan’s head. Inside Adam’s heart. 

“You brilliant bastard!” Gansey said. “You’ve done it. What did you do?”

“Got tired of sweating is what I did. Let’s look under this damn lake and get back into air-conditioning. Oh, don’t even, Parrish.”

Adam, on the other end of the boat, looked extremely unimpressed with Ronan’s lack of heat tolerance. “I didn’t say anything.”

“Whatever, man,” Ronan replied. “I know that face. You were born in hell, you’re use to it.” (ch. 24) (Gansey POV)

I BET YOU DO KNOW THAT FACE RONAN JUST NOT AS WELL AS THOSE HANDS AMMIRGHT. Sweet, beautiful banter. I love Ronan Lynch Delicate Flower so much. 

It was a comfortable enough arrangement; Adam and Ronan weren’t in a fight  at the moment, and both of them were too startled by the day’s events to start a new one. (ch. 36) (Adam POV)

So. We all know this chapter. Lets start from the top. Ronan drives Adam home after they all met at Fox Way to talk about Whelk and how he has a thing for killing raven boys. (what an asshat) Comfortable silences are really important to me. Also, I like that Ronan drove him even though Gansey really could have. 

He tightened his fingers around the strap of his bag, but he didn’t get out.

“Man, you don’t have to get out here,” Ronan sad.

Adam didn’t comment on that; it wasn’t helpful. Instead he asked, “Don’t you have homework to do?” (ch. 36)

I left out the the part where Ronan smirks at Adam for changing the subject. I honestly could have just copy+paste the whole damn chapter in this post but I reigned myself in. Anyway, I love Ronan Lynch. I love that he gives Adam an out without any pressure what so ever. I love that he makes this ONE comment and when Adam rejects it, he doesn’t fight him on it. I love that Ronan understands Adam has to do things in a very specific way. I love how he doesn’t always understand Adam but he gets how he works. 

Still Adam didn’t get out. He didn’t like the agitation of his father’s silhouette. But, it was unwise to loiter in the car-especially this car, an undeniably Aglionby car- flaunting his friendships.

(Ronan makes distracting comment/joke about Whelk)

There was quiet, and then Ronan said, “I better go feed the bird.”

But he looked down at the gearshift instead, eyes unfocused.

(have chat about Gansey almost dying/comfort) (ch. 36)

I shoved a pillow in my mouth because I couldn’t handle this whole damn scene. Adam hesitating hurts, it hurts for all the reasons we get later in the chapter and it hurts because he feels safe in that damn car. The ‘flaunting his friendships’ line always hits me as a double meaning. Also, I cry over the parallel of this moment with the TWO we get in TRK (the ‘wrong demon scene’ and the epilogue scene. i should do a post on this) Next part is how Ronan tries to gently get Adam to leave the car but it’s with no real effort. Best of all, a lot of the conversation in the car is Adam avoiding going in the house but it’s also Ronan needing to talk. We don’t get Ronan’s POV in this book but the most soft/intimate you get to see him is in this scene. Alone with Adam, voicing his fear of Gansey almost getting shot and dying. A fear they share. I know I didn’t place the dialogue here (i kinda regret it now but oh well) but I love how Adam ends up comforting Ronan and when Ronan seems to feel better that gives him a sort of settled feeling that allows him to open the door. 

“See you tomorrow. Thanks, again.”

Ronan looked away from the house, out across the black field. His hand worked on the steering wheel; something was frustrating him, but with Ronan, there was no telling if it was still Whelk or something else entirely.

“No problem, man. See you tomorrow.” (ch. 36)

*drags hands down face* Who understands Adam Parrish more than Ronan Lynch? No one. the restraint this took. I appreciate his not getting all Gansey on him. Adam was too tired for that. 

“To do this,” Ronan Lynch snarled, smashing his fist into the side of Robert Parrish’s face. Beyond him, the BMW sat, the driver’s side door hanging open, headlights illuminating clouds of dust in the darkness. Ronan, said Adam. Or maybe he only thought it. (ch. 36)

Okay so. A LOT GOING ON HERE. I know a lot of people sort of see this as a grand romantic gesture or something but to me it’s more of a character focus on Ronan. He’d do this for any of the people he loved, the people closes to him. Can you imagine if he saw someone hit Gansey? Matthew?? His anger had him race down road and jump out of the car the second Adam hit the floor. He protects the people he cares about. He fights for the people he cares about. Here it happens to be Adam. 

Adam’s vision shifted and cleared, shifted and cleared. He could make out Ronan, dimly. Appalled, he asked, “Is he being cuffed?”

This can’t happen. He can’t go to jail because of me. (ch. 36)

Protection my friends, goes both ways. I can write a NOVEL on Adam deciding to press charges against his dad. I won’t do that here but I assure you, I could on and on about it. I was honestly shocked when Adam pressed charges because I understand his situation. Even if he and we know that Ronan doesn’t care about Anglionby, doesn’t care about his future or himself really, Adam couldn’t let himself be the reason Ronan goes to jail. I think the thought of Ronan being affected by his situation, being collateral damage as it were, was that final push. 

“If Ronan had gotten arrested for punching Adam’s dad, he would’ve been out of Aglionby no matter what happened. No way they’d let an assault charge ride. But Adam pressed charges so Ronan would get off the hook…”

“She asked, “Okay, wait, so why is Ronan at the library?”

“Cramming,” Noah said. “For an exam on Monday.”

It was the nicest things Blue had ever heard of Ronan doing. (ch. 39) (Blue POV)

Blue has known them HOW LONG and she can tell what a grand gesture this is??? Ronan doesn’t even care about school, not one tiny bit but he does this to show Adam that he gets what a big deal this is, that he’s doing the right thing. I can’t.  

Adam and Ronan came in then. Ronan was bent double with a duffel bag and backpack on his back, and Adam carried a dented Froot Loops box with a Transformer poking out of the top. (ch. 39)

I mean......... someone is feeling guilty? eager? so weak?? All of the above probably. I will laugh forever over Ronan carrying everything Adam owns like a pack mule. It’s just so funny when you think about how lazy Ronan can be? Also why is that transformer in a froot loops box like what is the story there I need to know. 

Ronan, still weighed down with the luggage, headed across the floor toward Noah’s room, saying “Ha. Ha. Ha” in time with his footsteps. It was the kind of laughing that came from being the only person laughing. (ch. 39)

*shakes head* he was signed, sealed and delivered. It’s sweet and no one freakin’ notices and I just really really need to know what the hell they talked about in there. They kinda have a lot of off screen moments in book one and I wonder if that was done purposely. 

Adam said, “I don’t care about the risk.”

Ronan picked his teeth. “Me neither.”

“You have nothing to lose,” Gansey said, pointing at Adam. He looked at Ronan. “And you don’t care if you live or die. That makes you both bad judges.” (ch. 39)

RIGHTY-O DICK III!! As sad as that statement actually IS it is a perfect description of them at this time. It shows how similar they are and makes their character/relationship development all the more sweeter. They could NOT have started anything this early on, couldn’t even give those feelings much thought with everything else that was happening so instead we get to see compatibility, friendship, understanding and trust way before we see heart eyes and things on fire. That’s what makes the transition so easy to miss. At some point down the line, they start to heal part of themselves and it mirrors back and fourth until one day you have weird sex dreams about eating tattoos and two gods in a church, one with hungry eyes. 

Adam, with probable help from Ronan, moved from Monmouth Manufacturing to a room belonging to St. Agnes Church, a subtle distance that affected both boys in different ways. (ch. 48) (Blue POV)

The last pynch scene in this book! So questions: Did Ronan and Adam discuss him moving out before or after the sacrifice? I feel like its a really important question. Next, we know how this affected Ronan (the two objects of Ronan’s worship in one place) and I know there is a lot of speculation on how it affected Adam and not to burst any bubbles but I think that’s pretty clear too. He was really truly on his own and cut off from his family. :(( I know I am such a bummer. Okay I’ll end on a bittersweet note. Adam’s constant fighting with Gansey leads to a more solid relationship with Ronan, trusting him to have his back, to not put pressure on him, to not play peacemaker. After Ronan fights his dad it just shifts everything between them. He lets Ronan help him because he feels they are on equal ground. And we all know how Adam loves equality.
