Excerpt from Ch. 5 of my fic "In which Enjolras spurns Grantaire's affections and Ăponine gives him a piece of her mind... possibly prompting him to reconsider"
He didnât know whether it was normal for Gavroche to jump on Grantaireâs back in the middle of a tense scene and start howling. He didnât know whether it was normal for Azelma to huff in frustration over the developing romance and snidely comment that the female lead âhas better chemistry with her gay editor than with this guyâ. He didnât know whether it was normal for Ăponine to be watching the movie stretched out across the couch, with her head in Grantaireâs lap.
Enjolras found that he spent more time watching the interactions between the people on the couch than the people on the screen. As such, it almost took him by surprise when the credits music came on and Grantaire clicked the tv off.Â
âWell thatâs that,â Grantaire said. âI say eight out of ten.â
âSix and a half,â Ăponine contributed.
âThree,â said Azelma.
âSixteen over pi,â Gavroche quipped cheerfully.
Grantaire tweaked Gavrocheâs nose, then turned to Enjolras, smiling. âEnjolras?â
âOh. Um. Seven.â Immediately after speaking the random number, Enjolras chastised himself for his disingenuousness. âI beg your pardon. I confess Iâm not sure what to rate the movie.âÂ
Grantaire chuckled. âNo sweat, E. Consider yourself pardoned.âÂ
Gavroche clambered closer to Grantaire on the sofa and began tugging on his arm. âWhat now?â he asked eagerly. âJenga?â
âBonanza,â Ăponine said.Â
âBalderdash!â Azelma chirped.
Enjolras frowned â for he had no idea what any of these strange words meant.Â
âHang on,â Grantaire interjected. âBefore games â Zelma, why donât you show Enjolras the new dance shoes we bought with his gift card?â
Azelma smiled brightly. âSure!â She hopped off the couch and went to fetch the shoes.Â
Enjolras felt oddly flustered. The suggestion that Azelma show him her shoes made him feel as though he was being put in the spotlight. And while he was perfectly comfortable with the spotlight when delivering eloquent speeches or commanding the attention of a rally... in this family setting, he was quite out of his depth.Â
Azelma returned a moment later, proudly wearing a pair of black lace-up shoes with a slight heel. âTheyâve got suede soles for just the right amount of traction,â she told Enjolras. âIdeal for spinning and gliiiding...â She struck a pose on the last word and slid a couple feet across the floor. Then she grinned and extended both her hands to Grantaire. âCome on Grantaire, letâs demonstrate for him!â
Grantaire smiled and gently nudged Ăponine, who was still lying with her head on his lap. She sat up and Grantaire pushed himself off the couch. As he drew near to Azelma, he took her right hand in his and placed his other hand on her upper back. Then, the two were gliding and twirling about the room, to whoops and cheers from Ăponine and Gavroche. They appeared to switch dance styles a number of times, displaying everything in their repertoire. Enjolras didnât know anything about dance styles, but when the graceful floating of the Waltz became the energetic pulses and kicks of the Lindy Hop, he was astute enough to remark the change. It was truly delightful to watch, and Enjolras found himself smiling in spite of his initial discomfort.Â
Finally, Grantaire twirled Azelma into him and dropped her in a low dip.
Ăponine and Gavroche clapped enthusiastically â and then Gavroche turned to his older sister with an impish grin.
âOkay, Ăpâs turn!â he said, giving her a firm shove in the back so that she staggered forward.
Azelma promptly stepped away, making room for Ăponine. The latter looked rather stunned.
âWhat? I donât daââÂ
But she was cut off by Grantaire who, laughing, promptly swept her towards him and began whisking her about the room. She shrieked, and at first tried to tug away. But Grantaireâs hold was firm and he continued carrying her with him through every step, even as her resistance caused her to stumble dreadfully.
âRelax,â he said, smiling down at her with eyes that shone with fondness. âIf you just relax, it will be easy. Iâve got you.â Ăponine scowled up at him and opened her mouth to retort â but then he gave her right hand, which was clasped in his, an affectionate squeeze. âCome on,â he said. âTrust me.âÂ
She hesitated a moment â and then, the muscles in both her face and her body softened. Soon she was smiling as Grantaire moved her, much more easily now, through steps that she knew nothing of.Â
It was indeed much improved after she relaxed; there was much less staggering and jerkiness as Ăponine resisted Grantaireâs lead. Even so, however, it was not nearly as esthetically pleasing as watching Azelma and Grantaire dance. And yet... despite that inferiority, Enjolras found his chest tightening with emotion as he watched this pair, in a way that it had not while watching Grantaire dance with Azelma.
Whatever this was... whatever Ăponine and Grantaire had... he wanted it.Â
Enjolras scarcely admitted feelings of a yearning nature to himself. Perhaps even at that very moment, he was not truly admitting them to himself. All the same, they showed on his face... Which was why, when Grantaire finally dipped Ăponine to end the dance, his expression of simple joy faltered as he caught sight of Enjolras.
âUm...â Grantaire released Ăponine and tugged awkwardly at his ear, his eyes fixed on Enjolrasâs wistful face. âDo you... wanna try?â Uncertainly, he extended a hand towards Enjolras. Â
A hot flush rose promptly to Enjolrasâs face. His yearning expression vanished and was replaced with something much harder.
âNo thank you,â he said, and there was a chill in his voice that had not been there since heâd banned Grantaire from the ABC Meetings. He pulled his phone out of his pocket and made a show of checking the time. âI should head home,â he said stiffly. âThank you for inviting me to your movie night.â
And then, without further ceremony, Enjolras walked briskly to the door and exited.Â
Grantaire was left staring at the closed door, devastation all across his face. Ăponine was left staring up at Grantaire, wearing much the same expression.Â
âI...â Grantaire passed a shaky hand over his eyes. âI made him uncomfortable. I didnât mean... I wasnât hitting on him, I just...â
âFucking bastard.â Despite the aggressiveness of Ăponineâs words, her tone was more stricken than angry. In fact, tears thickened her voice and shone in her eyes as she spoke. âItâs not your fault, Taire.â She stepped closer towards him and hugged him fervidly. When she spoke again, her voice was low and bitter. âOnce an asshole, always an asshole, I guess.â
âDonât.â Grantaire pushed Ăponine away from him... something she couldnât recall him ever having done before. âHeâs not an asshole. I just made him uncomfortable.âÂ
âI should head out too,â he muttered, avoiding eye-contact with any of them. âGood night guys.â
------
âPonine? You wanna come to bed?â Azelma gazed in concern at her sister, who was sitting with her knees tucked up in the couch, staring glumly at the tv screen where Lorelei Gilmore and Luke Danes were bantering.
âNo thanks, Zelma.â
Azelma sighed and bowed her head. âPonine... I know you and Grantaire donât fight often. Still, Iâm sure that you two will make up just fine. Itâs not like you guys can live without each other.âÂ
Ăponine chuckled â a slight sob colouring the sound. She looked away from the tv screen to offer Azelma a grateful, if a little watery, smile. âThanks, Zelma. Have a good sleep, yeah? Iâll join you in a bit.â
Once Azelma was gone, Ăponine rested her forehead on her knees, abandoning any pretense of watching the show. She knew Azelma was right â she and Grantaire would be okay in the end. She just wished tonight hadnât happened. She wished Grantaire hadnât stalked out of the apartment angry with her, for the first time in their eight years of friendship... And even more, she wished she hadnât had to see Grantaire get his heart stomped on yet again... Ăponine had witnessed Grantaireâs heart being stomped on by Enjolras too many times to count â on a near daily basis, previously. But it was so much worse this time. It was so much worse after Grantaire had been pouring everything into being kind to Enjolras and just trying to make him happy... After Enjolras and Grantaire actually seemed to be getting on good terms... After she, Ăponine, had started to believe that sheâd misjudged Enjolras, and maybe he wasnât an asshole after all.Â
What Ăponine should be doing right now was comforting Grantaire. He should be curled up next to her on this couch and they should be bingeing Netflix while she rubbed soothing circles on his back.Â
Instead, she was watching their show by herself and he was at home, alone in his heartbreak and likely stewing in his anger towards her.Â
It was wrong. Everything about it was wrong. And she hated it.Â
Suddenly, Ăponine heard the front door open â and there stood Grantaire.Â
âHullo,â Grantaire said quietly, as she stared at him in shock.Â
She cried out and rocketed to her feet. Within an instant theyâd crossed the floor, meeting each other halfway. She collapsed into him and his arms engulfed her.Â
âIâm sorry, Taire,â she sobbed. Tears promptly soaked his shirt as she pressed her face into his collarbone.Â
Grantaire shook his head. âNo, Iâm sorry. That was awful of me to snap at you and storm out like that.âÂ
âIt was awful of me to talk trash about your crush. I know that wasnât the first time⊠Iâm so sorry, Iâll be better.âÂ
Grantaire dropped his face into her hair. âI forgive you, Ăp. I know itâs coming out of a place of caring about me.âÂ
âDoesnât make it okay.âÂ
âPerhaps not. But it does make it easy to forgive.âÂ
She whimpered gratefully. For a moment, she simply breathed him in. When at last she spoke again, her voice was cracked with emotion. âThank you for coming back.â
âCourse I came back, Ăp. Iâm just sorry it took me so long.âÂ
It had taken him a total of ninety minutes.Â
âI should have gone after you.â
Grantaire lifted and lowered a shoulder. âMaybe. Or maybe I shouldnât have left to begin with.â
âAre you okay? Enjolras ââÂ
âShhh. Don't worry. We don't need to talk about Enjolras right now.â
Ăponine hesitated, but then murmured acceptance and nuzzled her face in Grantaire's shirt.  âWill you stay tonight, Taire?âÂ
âSure, Ăp.â
-----
When Azelma woke the next morning, the first thing she did was roll over and check Ăponineâs bed. It was still empty. Azelmaâs face crumpled in concern. She pushed herself onto her feet and, wrapping her robe about her, headed out into the living room.Â
As she suspected, Ăponine was asleep on the couch. But she wasnât alone.Â
She was slumbering on Grantaireâs chest, his arms wrapped firmly around her. Her hair was a wild, frizzy, red disaster, covering most of her face and some of Grantaireâs. But Azelma could still see her sisterâs slack mouth â and she could see the puddle of drool that mouth had left on Grantaireâs shirt. All in all, it was a fairly unattractive sight⊠yet Azelmaâs heart leapt at it.Â
She couldnât help but hope, as she gazed at the entangled sleepers, that Ăponine and Grantaire had figured things out last night beyond simply resolving their dispute.

Ăponine hugged her knees to her chest, digging her sharp chin into them. Tear marks streaked her face.Â
Grantaire sighed and rubbed his friendâs back with his left hand (his right hand held the absinthe bottle they were sharing). âThereâs nothing wrong with you, Ăp.âÂ
âThen why the hell couldnât I make it work with Courf?âÂ
Grantaire raised the hand that held the bottle to his face, and rubbed his knuckles over his eyes in a wearied fashion. âI guess because he wasnât the one.âÂ
âĂp, Courf isnât gonna be the only guy in the world whoâs good to you and who likes you.âÂ
âReally?â Eponine scoffed bitterly. âBecause history would seem to indicate ââÂ
âFor cripesâ sake, you canât project doomsday prophecies onto the future of your entire love life based on Marius and Montparnasse. There are other men in the world.âÂ
âItâs not just Marius and Montparnasse!â Ăponine snapped. âTheyâre just the prototypes. Men are either the wholesome, wonderful type who would never look my way, or theyâre the asshole type who would. By some miracle Courf was neither of those â he was a non-asshole who actually expressed interest in me⊠And I flub it after two months!â
âYou didnât flub it, Ăp. You just didnât have any feelings for Courf.â
âBut WHY?!â
âEh?âÂ
âWhy didnât I have any feelings for Courf?!âÂ
Grantaire cast her an exasperated look. âCrowley Ăp, I donât know! You just didnât! What do you want me to do, write you a thesis on the laws of romantic attraction? You either have feelings for someone or you donât. Itâs not like you can control it.âÂ
âThatâs so dumb.â She spat the last word out with considerable venom. âIf someone likes me and is good to me â and I know that if I could only return their feelings I would be happy with them⊠Well then I should be able to choose that. I should be able to decide to return their feelings so I can claim that happiness. Itâs fucking stupid that something as vital as your own happiness could be outside of your control! Who the hell designed this system!âÂ
Grantaire sighed tiredly. âI donât believe in Intelligent Design.â
Ăponine set the absinthe bottle down and angled herself to face him. She squinted â glared? â at him intently.Â
âWhatâs wrong with you?â
Grantaire frowned. âHuh?âÂ
âYouâre normally a hell of a lot more supportive than this. Whatâs eating you?âÂ
Grantaire flinched. Then, slowly, a look of remorse crossed his features and he ducked his head.Â
âIâm sorry, Ăp. Youâre right, Iâm not being a very good friend. You can vent. Iâll stop being a jerk and actually listen.âÂ
Ăponine eyed him for a moment. Then, she scooted closer to him, dropped her head on his shoulder, and wriggled her arms underneath his so that she could wrap them around his middle.Â
âYou werenât being a jerk,â she said softly. âYou were just being slightly less of the outstanding best friend you normally are.âÂ
Grantaireâs mouth tweaked into a sad smile. âWell⊠Iâm sorry for being a slightly less outstanding best friend to you, Ep.â
âI forgive you. Your track record isnât too shabby.âÂ
Grantaireâs smile shed some of its sadness. He closed his eyes and lowered his head to the side, til it rested on top of Ăponineâs.Â
âIs it Enjolras?â Ăponine asked.Â
Grantaire shrugged the shoulder that didnât have Ăponineâs head on it. âYeah.â (It was always Enjolras.) âBut we donât have to talk about that right now. You wanted to talk about Courf.â
âItâs okay, I was done. We can talk about Enjolras.âÂ
Grantaire was silent for a moment.Â
Two moments.Â
Then, he shifted himself under Ăponineâs weight and turned, tugging her into his chest for a full frontal hug.Â
âLetâs not talk about either of them, okay?â he murmured into her hair. âWanna watch something dumb?âÂ
Ăponine chuckled. When she pulled away from him, her eyes and mouth were smiling.Â
âYeah,â she said. âDumb like actually dumb, or dumb like amazing dumb?â
âDumb like amazing dumb.âÂ
She nodded astutely. âHigh school musical?âÂ
âOne or two?â
âThree.âÂ
Grantaire cocked an eyebrow. Ăponine held her poker face for a couple more seconds, then burst into laughter.Â
âIâm joking, obviously. Two.â
Grantaire smiled and flicked her in the forehead.Â

Preview:
âCake?âÂ
Enjolras, who had been watching the affectionate horseplay that had broken out between Grantaire and Gavroche, started and whipped around. Ăponine was stiffly holding out a piece of cake to him, set on a plastic flower-shaped plate. Her face was twisted in a rather grimace-like smile.
âOh.â Enjolras gingerly took the plate. âThank you.âÂ
Her duty done, Ăponine turned and took to washing the pile of dishes that had been stacked up by the sink.
âMay I help?â Enjolras offered.Â
Ăponine grunted. âNo thanks. Eat your cake.âÂ
Enjolras hesitated a moment â it felt wrong standing here idly watching Eponine work. But as she continued scrubbing the plates without so much glancing in his direction, he eventually bowed his head and took a bite of cake.Â
A moment later, a tousled-looking Grantaire appeared in the kitchen doorway.Â
âHey guys. Allâs well in here?â His gaze settled on Enjolrasâs slice of cake and he beamed. âItâs good, isnât it? I told you.âÂ
Enjolras nodded. âIndeed.â
Grantaire reached around Ăponine and grabbed the hand towel that hung by her elbow. Enjolras observed as the man seamlessly inserted himself into Ăponineâs dishwashing routine, drying every item she washed and putting it away in the appropriate place.
âSo, Enjolras, have you and Combeferre settled the thing you were debating last meeting?â Grantaire asked as he rearranged the stack of plates in the cupboard above Ăponineâs head (he moved the larger plates to the bottom so that they fit together more neatly).Â
âAh. The matter of the supposed counterargument to consequentialism?â
âYeah. Something about a doctor killing someone who comes in for a nose job to donate their organs to three dying people...âÂ
âIndeed. Weâve not settled it between us, no, but Combeferre is wrong. Itâs perfectly consistent for a consequentialist to reject that repugnant conclusion. The farther removed consequences that would result from having a society where doctors can sacrifice their patients are, nonetheless, consequences â and undesirable ones at that. That thought experiment, while widely employed to refute consequentialism, is ultimately unsuccessful in doing so.â Â
Grantaireâs mouth tweaked into a lopsided, admiring grin. Ăponine, on the other hand, rolled her eyes in a thoroughly unimpressed fashion. This did not escape the attention of either Enjolras or Grantaire, and the latter kicked his friend in the ankle. Ăponine looked up to meet Grantaireâs unhappy gaze. Then, she ducked her head penitently.Â
âIâm gonna go get the gift opening started,â Ăponine mumbled, and quit the kitchen.
Grantaire and Enjolras were left alone, the former frowning after Eponineâs retreating back and the latter staring uncomfortably at the floor. Finally, Enjolras cleared his throat.Â
âGrantaire,â he began. âIf Ăponine would rather I not be here, I can ââÂ
âNo. No, E.â Grantaire shook his head vehemently. Then he sighed and dropped his drying cloth on the dish rack. âLook... Iâm sorry about Ăp. Sheâs trying. This is just new to her. But sheâll come around.âÂ
Enjolras blinked, then stared. This?  What was âthisâ? Was âthisâ hanging out with Ăponine and Grantaire in her apartment? Was âthisâ a thing now? Â
Grantaire stepped towards Enjolras. Enjolras started and almost backed away â but Grantaire only placed a hand on his shoulder and squeezed it.
âCome on,â he said kindly. âLetâs go watch Azelma open her gifts.âÂ
-----
Enjolras watched as Grantaire fastened the new necklace Azelma had received around her neck, fluffing her hair when he was done.Â
âStylish!â he exclaimed. Then, turning to her friend, âGood taste Rachelle!âÂ
Ăponine clucked her tongue in appreciation. âZelma, that would go so well with your green dress, hey?â She too thanked Rachelle, and then she was passing along the next gift.Â
Enjolras shifted his feet awkwardly. He wished Grantaire was the one passing out the gifts right now... That would be easier. He considered navigating around the gaggle of teenagers to get to Grantaire, but decided he couldnât do so without looking like a fool. So, when Ăponine stepped back again to watch Azelma open the next gift, Enjolras drew closer to her and coughed lightly.
âĂponine.âÂ
She turned to him. Enjolras observed that she flinched ever so slightly, and he felt a wave of guilt. He shouldnât have come here. It was clear he was ruining this special day for Ăponine. He would just give her his gift now and take the first opportunity to leave.
Enjolras straightened his shoulders and held out an envelope to Ăponine.Â
Ăponineâs eyes flicked down to it, then widened in surprise. The envelope was addressed to Azelma.Â
âOh.â Eponine lifted her head again to meet Enjolrasâs gaze. He wasnât certain, but he thought she looked a little abashed. âThank youâŠâ she said, and her voice was softer than Enjolras had heard it yet.Â
When Azelma and Grantaire had finished cooing over her last gift, Ăponine walked up to her sister. Dropping the envelope in her hand, she said something too quietly for Enjolras to hear. Azelma cast a surprised look in his direction. Then, her eyes crinkled in a smile. Behind Azelmaâs shoulder, Grantaire too was smiling â it was a smile that overflowed with warmth and seemed to make his entire face shine.
âItâs a gift card to Duckfeet Dancewear,â Azelma announced, once she had opened the envelope. âEnjolras, how did you know I dance?âÂ
âYour sister mentioned it,â Enjolras replied. âShe said Grantaire was teaching you. Iâm sorry, Iâm aware gift cards are dull presents, but I didnât know ââÂ
âNo.â Azelma shook her head, still smiling kindly. âThank you. Itâs perfect.âÂ
-----
Grantaire and Ăponine stood in front of Enjolras as he slipped his shoes on and retrieved his jacket from the closet. Grantaire was grinning at Enjolras he leaned against Ăponine, his elbow perched on her shoulder. As for Ăponine, her face was twisted in a rather strained, discomfited expression that solidified Enjolrasâs resolve to hurry his departure.
âThank you very much for having me here tonight,â he said, his voice carefully measured. He nodded first to Grantaire, then to Ăponine.Â
âOur pleasure, E.â Grantaire chirped. âWas fun having you around. Come on over anytime, yeah?âÂ
Enjolras flinched. Then, he frowned. âGrantaire, with all due respectâŠâ He had intended to finish by saying that that wasnât Grantaireâs invitation to make. However, at that moment his mind flashed back to Grantaire effortlessly putting away Eponineâs dishes, play-wrestling with Gavroche, fastening the necklace for Azelma⊠and he wondered whether that would even be a correct statement.
Suddenly, Enjolrasâs reverie was broken by Ăponine stepping towards him. She looked distressed, and Enjolras again felt remorse at having intruded against her will. But then, she extended her hand to him to shake.Â
âThank you so much for bringing Azelma a gift,â she said quietly. âThat was really nice of you.â
Enjolrasâs eyes widened ever so slightly. âBut of course. You neednât thank me for that. It was her birthday party after all.âÂ
Ăponine smiled at him â a small, rueful smile that nonetheless seemed to soften her aspect. There was a momentâs silence, in which Eponine and Enjolras simply stood looking at each other. Then Grantaire cleared his throat.
âYouâre supposed to shake her hand, E.â His voice was loaded with amusement â perhaps even joy.
Enjolras started. With a somewhat spasmodic gesture, he reached forward and clasped Ăponineâs proffered hand.
âĂ plus tard,* Ăponine.âÂ
Her grip tightened on his hand, and her words somehow seemed laced with significance as she responded: âĂ bientĂŽt,** Enjolras.âÂ
------
As soon as the door closed behind Enjolras, Grantaireâs arm flashed towards Ăponine and hooked her waist. With a flourish that could only have come from his dance training, he spun her into him and enveloped her in a hug.Â
âIâm proud of you.â

My piece for @themiserablesmonth, prompt âSmileâ
Summary:
âTwo birds with one stone,â Grantaire said, holding his hand out to Enjolras. âPermets-tu?â
Enjolras clasped his hand... and smiled.
Grantaire had waited so long for that smile. The hope of that smile was the reason he was here, standing before the armed soldiers, offering his life for a Revolution he didnât believe in.
It had been long in coming... Grantaire had had to endure countless cold looks of indifference, countless sharp words of disdain, prior to the arrival of this smile. But now here it was.
The smile pulled lightly at Enjolrasâs handsome, kissable lips. It softened his usually hard blue eyes.
It was everything Grantaire had been living for. Everything he would now die for.

On the last morning of Grantaireâs stay with Gavroche, he woke to the sound of a familiar voice â the most familiar voice â murmuring his name.Â
âTaire...âÂ
He felt the light brush of hair against his face and neck. It summoned him pleasantly back to wakefulness.
Stirring, Grantaire blinked open his eyes. He was greeted by the sight of Ăponine, bending over him. Her red hair hung loose, curtaining a face that shone with happiness.
âHello there,â she said, her eyes sparkling as she smiled.Â
Grantaire jolted upwards and latched both arms around her back. When he fell back onto the bed, she fell with him, laughing into his neck.Â
âI missed you,â he half-breathed, half-choked into her hair. He felt his heart had forced its way up his throat and was coming out with his words.Â
âI missed you too,â she chuckled. Then she pulled herself off of him and scowled. âBut why are you sleeping in my bed? I told you Zelmaâs is the better one!â
âI like yours,â Grantaire replied.
âI didnât get it ready for you though! I told you I didnât change the sheets.â
âMhm.âÂ
Ăponine sighed and let it go. âTell me how Gav was. He had this guilty look on his face when Zelma woke him. Whatâs the worst of it? Do I need to have any meetings with teachers?âÂ
Grantaire hesitated. His eyes travelled uncertainly over Ăponine's face. Catching this motion, Ăponine's forehead pinched in concern.
âWhat?â she pressed. âTell me.âÂ
âGav was fine,â Grantaire said at last. âI mean, he stirred things up a little. But Iâm... Iâm figuring it out.âÂ
Ăponineâs face scrunched up anxiously. âWhat did he do? How can I help?âÂ
Grantaire shook his head. âDonât worry about it, Ăp. Truly. Itâs in my court.âÂ
Eponine tried to protest â but Grantaire pulled her head down onto his chest again and she fell silent. She always fell silent when he did that. That was why he chose to do it right then... Or part of the reason anyway.
Ăponineâs hair smelled like the shampoo Grantaire had put down on his shopping list three days back.
He realized that he didnât know what Enjolrasâs hair smelled like. He didnât know... and in this moment, he didnât too much care.Â
âI love you, Ăp.â The words whisked from Grantaireâs mouth before he could choose to say them. For a moment he froze, stiffening slightly under Ăponine. For a moment, he forgot that âI love youâ was something he and Ăponine said to each other on a regular basis â the most natural, unsuspicious thing in the world.Â
He remembered this fact when Ăponine simply sighed contentedly and burrowed in closer to him.
âI know, Taire. I love you too.â
Grantaire felt his muscles relax. He had nothing to fear... Nothing was wrong. Nothing was out of order. Whatever can of worms Gavroche had opened wasnât a can of worms at all... It was just him and Ăp.Â

âWay to go, E,â Grantaire said, clapping him on the back. âFor someone whoâs not used to playing games, you sure have a knack for it.âÂ
Gavroche groaned and shoved his unused letters to the side. âLetâs play Jenga,â he said. âThese stupid word games put the intellectuals at an unfair advantage.â He jerked his head towards Enjolras and Combeferre, pouting.Â
âI dunno that that would change much with Jenga, Gav,â Grantaire said, chuckling. âFerre over here has studied everything under the sun. I wouldnât be surprised if he could pull out some fancy physics intel that would allow him to slaughter you in that game.âÂ
âNo way!â Gav protested. âIâm master of Jenga!âÂ
âAlright,â Ăponine said, reaching across and gathering the letter tiles back into the banana bag. âWhile weâre bickering over what game to play next and whoâs master of it â anyone want refills on popcorn?âÂ
A few agreeable murmurs echoed around the table, and Ăponine made to stand up. But Grantaire placed a hand on her shoulder and gently pressed her back into her seat.
âI can get it, Ăp.â Grantaire knew Ăponine had had a particularly exhausting day at school â and amazing as she was being this evening, he also knew that hosting was always a significant demand on her energy. He wished to ease the burden where he could. Standing up, Grantaire dropped a quick kiss to the top of Ăponineâs head, then turned and walked into the kitchen.Â
Combeferre, catching the affectionate gesture, cocked an eyebrow. He looked at Enjolras to see if he had observed the kiss as well. But Enjolras either had seen nothing, or did not read anything into it. Azelma and Gavroche, on the other hand, exchanged a knowing look, which did not go unnoticed by Combeferre. He took note as Gavroche rolled his eyes and Azelma let out a small, despondent sigh. This was not done with the air of them having seen anything new â rather, it seemed to be with the longsuffering attitude that comes from dealing with the same old frustration day in and day out.Â
Combeferre intentionally observed Grantaire and Ăponine more closely throughout the rest of the evening. He watched how Grantaire lazily threw his arm around her shoulder after sitting back down. He watched how she snuggled comfortably against him on the couch once the party had gravitated over there. He watched how, during a lag in their hosting duties when Gavroche had naturally adopted the role of entertainer, they turned to discussing domestic matters like a middle-aged married couple. Everything from coordinating Gavroche and Azelmaâs extra-curricular schedules to drawing up a grocery list to arranging for Grantaire to look after Gavroche while Ăponine took Azelma on a road trip (some birthday present, from what Combeferre gathered).Â
Combeferre watched... and eventually concluded that Enjolras didnât need to worry too much about breaking Grantaireâs heart after all.Â
-----
It was the day of Ăponine and Azelmaâs departure for the road trip to West End. Grantaire was helping them load their bags into his car.Â
âAre you sure you have everything?â He asked Ăponine one more time. âWhat about maxi pads? I know youâre not due, but Iâve heard travelling can affect womenâs cycles.âÂ
Ăponine snorted and punched Grantaire affectionately in the shoulder. âYouâre worse than a stereotypical mother,â she quipped. âAnd yes, we packed maxi pads. Zelmaâs on hers.â
From the passenger seat of the car, Azelma wailed. âPonine! So embarrassing!â
âOh donât be so emotional, Zelma. Itâs just Taire.â Â
Behind Grantaire, Gavroche was wrinkling his nose in utter disgust.
âOkay,â Ăponine said, turning to Grantaire again. âDonât forget, youâre using Zelmaâs bed. Itâs the comfiest, and I havenât changed the sheets on mine. And donât forget Gav has soccer after school tomorrow, til 5 pm. Oh, and the yogurt on the top shelf of the fridge is expiring soon, so maybe eat that today, yeah?â
Grantaire nodded. âGot it. And youâll call me at your first rest stop?âÂ
She smiled. âIâll call you.âÂ
With that, she stepped forward, and Grantaire engulfed her in a hug. Ăponine was only going to be gone for three days â but Grantaire already felt the ache of her absence.Â
Gavroche, on the other hand, couldnât wait for them to leave and for him to get Grantaire to himself. As such, on the fourth second of Grantaire and Ăponineâs hug, the boy huffed and impatiently stamped his foot.
âAlright, alright!â he said peevishly. âYou gonna mozy on out of here sis, or what? No need to take all day!âÂ
Ăponine released Grantaire and then pulled Gavroche into a hug too, ruffling his hair. âDonât give Taire any trouble, you here?âÂ
âTrouble? Me?â He smirked. âWherever did you get such an outlandish idea?âÂ
Ăponine rolled her eyes and flicked Gavroche in the forehead. âAlright,â she said, grinning one more time at Grantaire. âWeâre off.âÂ
And then they were.Â
Grantaire stood, staring after the receding car. But Gavroche wasted no time in breaking the moment.Â
âRight then,â the boy said, turning to Grantaire and grinning impishly. âNow that weâre rid of the broads, whatâs next? You bring any alcohol?â
Grantaire scoffed, reluctantly taking his eyes away from the car. âNot a chance, kiddo,â he said, giving Gavrocheâs nose a tweak.
âCome on, I know you drink it when Zelma and I arenât around! How bout sharing for once? I wonât tell Ponine.â
âNopety, nope, nope. But if you tie your shoes properly, Iâll take you to get a slurpee.âÂ
Gavroche beamed and quickly bent down to do up his laces.Â
They walked to the corner store and Grantaire purchased a pair of slurpees. After drinking those, they returned home and had a boxing lesson. Gavrocheâs face lit up like a firefly whenever Grantaire commented on his improved technique or shortened reaction time.Â
When at length the sun was going down and sweat was plastering both of their hair to their foreheads, Gavroche finally suggested a wrap.Â
âMovie time?â he said, panting as he grinned up at his teacher.
âSure thing. After showers.â
Gavroche showered first. During Grantaireâs turn, he found himself shaking the near empty shampoo bottle over his hand and smacking the bottom firmly in an attempt to dislodge the sparse remnants. He made a mental note to himself to check under Eponineâs sink after his shower to see if this was her last bottle. Finding that indeed it was, he retrieved his phone and added âepâs shampooâ to his ongoing shopping list.
Returning to the living room, he found Gavroche cross-legged in front of the TV, evidently already settled on a movie. Dark Knight.Â
Grantaire squinted at the screen. Then he turned a skeptical look to Gavroche. âIt says itâs rated R.â
Gavroche smirked. âHow very fitting for a movie night with R!âÂ
Grantaire rolled his eyes, smiling. Then he sobered again. âSeriously though, Gav, how about something more age-appropriate?â
âIâve already watched this, so no harm. The rating is just for violence and stuff.âÂ
Grantaire pursed his lips. âWhere did you watch it?âÂ
âAt a friendâs house.âÂ
âWas Ăponine aware?â
Gavroche cast him a mildly annoyed look. âNo.âÂ
âHm. Well, then I still donât think we should be watching it while she asked me to look after you.âÂ
Gavroche heaved an exasperated sigh. âYou are so whipped,â he groaned. âAnd it makes you very not fun sometimes.âÂ
Grantaire arched an eyebrow, then chuckled lightly. âGav, fyi the term âwhippedâ is typically used to talk about couples.â
Gav turned a condescending look on him. He didnât offer any verbal response, but that look clearly said something along the lines of âI canât believe youâre being such an idiot.âÂ
Grantaire frowned, perplexed. âI mean romantic couples,â he offered, for clarification.Â
Gavroche rolled his eyes â then picked up the remote and began flicking through the movies again. âOkay,â he said after a few seconds. âLame 90âs Batman with Nicole Kidman it is. PG-13. Happy?âÂ
Grantaire was a little bothered by their confusing interaction over the word âwhippedâ, but he shook it off and nodded his assent to Gavrocheâs choice. They proceeded to watch the movie. It was pretty lame, but Grantaire still managed to get into it, and had actually forgotten to be bothered... until they reached the part where the villain was insisting Batman choose between saving Nicole Kidman and saving Robin. At that point, Gavroche paused the movie and shifted around to face Grantaire.Â
âOkay R,â he said with a kind of supercilious sagacity. âLet me ask you something. Youâre still madly in love with Enjolras, right?âÂ
Now however, Gavroche was either allowing himself to speak more freely in Ăponineâs absence, or he had some distinct purpose for asking this question which overrode the taboo. Whichever it was, Grantaire took the question in good humour, and simply nodded.Â
âRight.âÂ
âMhm. So letâs say Two-Face over there ââ Gavroche jerked his head to the tv screen â âhad you in a bind and made you choose between saving Enjolrasâs life and saving Ponineâs. What would you do?âÂ
Grantaire blinked. Then frowned. âWhat kind of horrible question is that?âÂ
âA hypothetical one aimed at shedding light on your stupidity. Go on. Who would you choose?â Gavroche folded his arms expectantly. Then, after a momentâs consideration, he added: âAnd yes, we both know weâre going to turn this movie back on and good olâ Batmanâs gonna pull a fast one and save both. But scratch that from our hypothetical options. Ăponine or Enjolras, R?â
Grantaire pushed out an irritated sound through his nose. âI donât see the point of this exercise⊠But Iâd choose Ep, obviously. Iâm not a terrible best friend.âÂ
âMhm. âSâwhat I thought.â Gavroche smirked at Grantaire â but his smirk eventually faded as the latter just blinked back at him, non-plussed. Gavroche groaned and smacked a hand to his forehead. âJiminy Cricket, do I have to draw you a picture or something?â
âGav, I donât know what the heck youâre ââ
âOkay.â Gavroche waved a hand dismissively. âLetâs try again. Youâre shipwrecked on a deserted island and you can only have one person with you for company. One person , R, to spend the rest of your life with, exclusively. Who do you choose?â
âGav, why on earth ââ
âJust answer the question, R.â
Grantaireâs forehead was furrowed in a deep frown as he regarded the boy grilling him. He felt dreadfully uncomfortable. But Gavroche was like his eldest sister â tenacious. The only way to get this bizarre game of his to end, was to play it through. So Grantaire lifted his chin and answered, a little hoarsely:Â
âĂp.â
Grantaire nodded in satisfaction. âGood. If that isnât enough to get through your thick skull⊠Then blimey, I give up.â With that, he lifted the clicker again and pressed play.
Grantaire was sweating. He stuck his fists in his pits and clamped his arms down on them. âEp is my best friend, Gav,â he said, over the movie. His voice still came out rather cracked.Â
âMhm.â Gavrocheâs eyes didnât leave the screen. âYour best friend whom youâd rather spend your life with exclusively than with Enjolras, the supposed love of your life. Or did you forget that he was an option in the deserted island scenario?â
Yes. Enjolras was glorious and Grantaire was besotted with him.Â
But Enjolras wasnât Ăponine. Enjolras didnât spend countless evenings cuddled against Grantaire on the sofa, laughing over an episode of Gilmore girls theyâd already seen a dozen times. Enjolras didnât hold back his bangs while he vomited into a toilet out of heartsickness. Enjolras didnât put in heroic effort to befriend Grantaireâs crush, whom he hated, just because Grantaire asked him to.Â
And Enjolras wasnât familiar to Grantaire in every way, shape, and form... Grantaire didnât know Enjolrasâs living habits inside and out, from how he organized his dishes to what kind of shampoo he used. Grantaire didnât mentally keep track of the times of the month in which Enjolras was hormonal and moody, so that he could be sure to support him in all the right ways.
In short â Enjolras and Grantaire werenât bonded together so closely that if someone ever tried to separate them from each other, that person would have to manually untangle all their entrails, veins, and arteries.Â
Ăponine and Grantaire were.
Grantaire passed a slightly shaky hand across his forehead, mopping away the perspiration that had beaded there. âWhatever, Gav,â he said. He tried to sound indifferent â but the tremor in his voice betrayed him.

Posted Ch. 5 of In which Enjolras spurns Grantaire's affections and Ăponine gives him a piece of her mind... possibly prompting him to reconsider
Sneakpeek:
In fact, tears thickened her voice and shone in her eyes as she spoke. âItâs not your fault, Taire.â She stepped closer towards him and hugged him, burying her face fervidly in his chest.
