Υφος (1995)
Tagline: "A first year film student, obsessed with being "original", daydreams away the harsh reality of being compared to other filmmakers."
This was my final film project in 1st year university. I debuted this film to my class sometime in May 1995, so I'm uploading it here for it's 25th anniversary! This wasn't the first time I had acted, but the stress of directing myself...along with others... well... I really bit off more than I could chew, and it shows. I believe my supporting cast were great in their acting parts, which is why i'm sharing the full version here. Please consider when watching:
1) The picture & sound is horrible. I tried my best to clean it up in this 2020 version, re-digitizing, shot by shot, from the original Video8 tapes. But it has tons of problems that I can't be bothered to fix. Most of it unfixable.
2) The story is very pretentious. My intention was to inspire others! Lol. That didn't work. I mean, look at that god damn title! What an asshole.
3) This was Kate Kelton's (Haven, Harold & Kumar) debut acting role! Love you Kate! So proud of you and always will be. Yes, i'm buttering you up in case you didn't want me to post this. Jk you know you are the best.
4) Yes, people who were the same age as me (at the time) were supposed to be playing someone much older. Those were the limitations of being a student, and convincing someone to take said film student seriously.
5) I might have accidentally killed our film teacher after he watched it. He thought that we were making fun of him after seeing Brock's "Professor" role. Sure, I was kind of making fun of film theory, and a lot of the movies we watched in class (With references to abstract films, "Plastics" scene was paying homage to "The Graduate", Eisenstein and German expressionism, etc). But boy, he ripped us new a-holes after he saw this film. Totally misunderstanding the point of the story. (After we showed this in class, he never returned to finish the year. Some say he had a nervous breakdown. To this day, I still don't know what happened to him.) I just wanted to make a Woody Allen movie with my friends. Did I know it would come with the stigma of people blending real life vs. fiction elements? I just wasn't prepared for that backlash.
6) Shingles doesn't care! Special shout out to Brock, James, Dave Kyte and Benvenuti for taking on those roles. Extra special shout out to Henry Tyminski (who played Norman in the film) for helping me out so much while making this, and all my other shorter films that year. Also a super duper shout out to Andrée Cazabon (who played Alice), who was always there whenever i needed her, and humoured me, even when i had no idea what i was doing.
