post-canon bokuroo; involving a ring β‘
note: this will read like a threadfic but if you want to read the deleted scene only (where they actually have a moment together), see the reblogs, i will paste it in a reblog after this! enjoyyy
struck with the thought and image of pro-volleyball player bokuto; a simple man, flashy and bright in his personality but not in accessories, he never wears accessories except for the occasional bracelet (those thread ones that are simply tied around his wrists) and simple in colour too, and usually only because his stylist asks him to.
that same bokuto who suddenly starts appearing with an obvious chain around his neck, but no one can see what's attached to it because there's just always something that covers it up. the item seems to fall under his shirts and whenever he does ads that doesn't involve a shirt, he doesn't wear it (probably bc those ads involve water). everyone's curious about it, wondering what it is that he brings on his person without fail every time he's seen in public.
journalists try to ask him when he does interviews, but it's hard because it's such a random, in hindsight not so important question as compared to all the other questions that can be asked. but when someone finally remembers to prepare it in their list, bokuto beams bright and says β "it's a ring!!!!"
the interviewer's so stunned bc they for some reason had expected a coy or sneaky response, but bokuto's just grinning and proudly lifting his fingers to rub at the β ring, and yeah okay that is definitely a ring with how the round shape becomes obvious, pressed between bokuto's thumb and forefinger. unfortunately they do not get to follow up with "what kind of ring is it???" so the interview ends and the whole nation starts to speculate where that ring is from and what it represents.
people are torn between it being a marriage ring ("but he's not married!?!?"), an engagement ring ("but he's never been confirmed to be in any relationship!"), a family heirloom ("but he only just started wearing it...") or just. a ring he suddenly wanted to wear just because. more than that though people are soooo curious about what that goddamn ring looks like. maybe then they would have a better idea of what it represents. it's not only until that summer that people finally, finally get a glimpse.
on a particularly hot day, the msby jackals were having a mini-interview on an upcoming match they were having; it's air-conditioned but so stuffy still. halfway through, as meian was answering a question and explaining how much they've trained, bokuto β sitting somewhere to the side with hinata and atsumu β not even in the centre, does a little muffled exhale before he's just. removing his jacket. (because it's so hot and stuffy)
once again the chain he's wearing catches attention with the way it glints in the light and then he's just leaning down from his seat to grab the water bottle by his chair leg and! the ring! it finally slips out from under his shirt and there's a collective gasp from the journalists on the floor.
meian pauses, confused. atsumu holds his breath, already knowing what's coming. bokuto innocently looks up from the sudden tense silence, slowly bringing the bottle to his lips and drinking from it. and the ring is just. there. resting on his chest, simple silver with no visible designs. at least not from what everyone can see, being so far away.
a journalist breaks protocol, crushing the list in their hand and out of their own morbid personal curiosity, directs the next question at an unsuspecting bokuto: "pardon my intrusiveness... but many have been wondering, what does that ring mean to you, bokuto-senshuu?"
everyone slackens their jaws. bokuto's surprised, but he once again brings his hand up to lift the ring between his thumb and forefinger, and it's obviously affectionate the way he holds it. "ohhh, this?" he says. unaware as to how thousands in front of their tvs watching the conference live have stopped breathing. "hmm... it's a promise, i guess?"
the entire room brightens with another bokuto beam as the journalists start tripping over each other with follow-up questions, "what kind of promise, bokuto-senshuu?"; "with who did you make that promise, bokuto-senshuu?" and atsumu's face looks constipated with how hard he's trying not to laugh, hinata looks super excited and like he might bounce off the walls, meian is exasperated but kind enough to let the interview go off script.
bokuto laughs, looking at his captain confused. a little worried that he's derailing the entire thing, but answers readily once meian nods at him in permission. "wellβ uh. man, we haven't fully discussed me talking about it in public, but... it's a promise for the olympics," he smiles. his eyes shine with a particular brand of fondness that's never been seen before.
"if i win gold for the olympics..." he takes a little breath, but everyone can see he feels psyched up, enthusiastic, exuberant about it.
"tetsu, you'll be with me forever β don't forget!"
and somewhere in tokyo, in a little office within the building housing the JVA, one kuroo tetsurou sneezes.
the public goes crazy, after that. 'tetsu' starts trending on twitter and people are like ??? so it's a promise for marriage ??? arguing what "being together forever" could even mean. some hearts are left heartbroken while others pleasantly anticipate the outcome of this whole fiasco. interviewers start scrambling to question bokuto about this "tetsu" but he keeps surprisingly mum about it, grinning sheepishly, "sorry, tetsu gave me an earful after what i said last time" which only invites more curiosity about who! this tetsu person is!
the only other time it's brought up again is the start of the olympics, during a pre-interview, "do you have any words you want to say to friends and family back home?"
and bokuto gazing into the camera, eyes bright, "tetsu, you better be watching! we'll definitely get the gold and then you'll have to uphold your promise!" blatantly bringing his ring up and pressing a kiss to it. after that, there's hardly any doubt left that this is a lover bokuto's speaking of. again, more hearts shatter across japan haha
and of course for the sake of this little story japan advances steadily and with each win bokuto only gets more fired up. he's racking up the points, people across social media everywhere are saying it's because he's going to bag someone off the shelf for life if the japanese volleyball team really manages the gold.
as they proceed into the quarterfinals, and then the semis, people start to get anxious about what's going to happen, how it's going to go down. there are so many speculations, and yet no one knows for sure still who this "tetsu" is, because it's obviously an abbreviation, and there are so many names that can have "tetsu" in them (some people actually do think it's kuroo bc they've always been close).
and then finally, finally... the finals. it seems like the entire nation of nippon is holding their breath as the first set goes, and then the second set... the third and the fourth and the lastβ and then. again for the sake of this little story, japan wins. there's pin-drop silence for a long, long second, before ear-shattering cheers and screams start sounding everywhere, the japanese national volleyball team members jumping all over each other, bokuto hugging and spinning hinata, one-arm hugging atsumu.
it's hectic and crazy and a whirlwind rush after that. there are eyes on bokuto everywhere he goes, people half-expecting a sudden proposal, or a declaration, or a hint of anything even, but none of that happens. he's always with his team, being shuffled here and there for the medal ceremony, then photo-taking, though people speculate that his eyes have been searching the crowds of people in the stands from time to time, almost like he was looking for someone.
and the public are so on edge because what now. when is it going to happen. everyone's been waiting and discussing it for months.
unfortunately for them the next time bokuto appears in something other than his uniform, he's back in a jacket and no one can see whether his ring is still there. but assumingly, it is. because he hasn't been anywhere besides the showers and lockers and there are so many curious eyes on him at all times. but time crawls forward and people begin to get increasingly confused because bokuto seems to be happy where he's at, mood obviously in the clouds, he doesn't seem to be rushing anywhere.
twitter explodes again with "i thought he would be hurrying to tetsu to fulfil the promise!", "bokuto-senshuu's not going to tetsu???" everyone's appalled and the heartbroken rise with renewed hope lmaooo
until that evening, when the post-interview is finally held. obviously, the journalists are professional and their questions remain about the match, the win, the team but again. all eyes suddenly bug out when the end of the interview comes. bc bokuto, in his relief that all his obligations for the day are finally over, unzips his jacket and stretches his sore body, arms raised and everything and. the ring.
the ring is not there. his neck is bare and the tabloids are immediately eating it up, making headlines, domino-ing the news everywhere. it's the end of the interview so no one can even ask anything, and collectively, everyone is just ?????? where did the ring go!!!! does he even still have it???? did he give it to "tetsu"?????? when did he even have a chance to??????? wtf????????
but the pieces start slowly falling together because on the opposite side of the venue, the staff of the national team are being asked their own questions. iwaizumi and kuroo are sitting next to each other; iwachan answering questions about the training regimen he put the team through, kuroo answering questions about what he thinks and hopes this will mean for japanese volleyball now that they have a gold.
and it's a normal interview, happy stuff, until.
kuroo who's professionally had his hands on his lap the whole time, reaches for the bottle of water by the leg of his chair (yes it's a parallel bc i'm a sucker for them like that aha) and again there's a sudden collective silence. someone gasps. jaws are once more slackening as light bounces off the metal adorning kuroo's left ring finger. immediately people start to wonder, is that......??????
unfortunately for the journalists it's not professional to ask staff that (not justifiable either, it's not like with the team members themselves) but the public goes wild. people dive into kuroo's social media, kenma's social media, iwaizumi's social media, just for a hint as to whether he's worn a silver ring before, any time before that dayβ looking for photos, videos, anything that shows his left hand (rare)
kuroo is a low profile kind of guy (at least his public account is) and so are all his friends. ironically, his most high profile friend is bokuto but whenever bokuto posts them hanging out, kuroo's hands are never in frame. BUT STILL. people are like, it's gotta be him. tetsu. it's GOTTA be.
but also... there's no concrete evidence. and for a long while, eyes are on them wherever they go. separate, together, doesn't matter. the people want to know. but the people never get to know for sure.
and history will say that they were two best bros who stayed by each other's sides till the day they died :')

not sure if anyone remembers the 'bokuto gets called out on kenma's stream that he likes kuroo romantically' fic but it's finally completed !!! for bokuroo day <3
thinking about bokuroo in their thirties, reminiscing all the good times they've had so far and the memories they've created over the years, which eventually leads to bokuto saying, "but i still want to make more memories with you, kuroo. i bet even when we're old and grey we'd be the most fun to be around!" with a large beaming grin.
kuroo raises an eyebrow at him, caught off guard yet quickly hiding his surprise, "careful, bo, it kinda sounds like you're saying you want to be with me forever." at this point they've only just gotten together after a long time of pining and their relationship is still very fresh β maybe even too fresh.
but bokuto shrugs easily and he frowns a little. "yeah, that's exactly what i'm saying?" he looks puzzled by kuroo's response, until his eyes alight with something like realisation, a tinge of doubt shining through. his voice softens considerably then, "... am i the only one who's thinking that?"
the straightforwardness of it is what gets to kuroo as he coughs and rubs at the back of his neck, feeling the warmth that's blooming inside him spread everywhere. he can't meet bokuto's gaze, and in his typical roundabout way, he says: "no, it just sounded a little like a proposal. you've gotta pick your words better, bo."
he peeks at bokuto from his peripherals and it seems like bokuto gets it, his entire expression lighting up once more as he laughs joyously. chest puffing out the way it does when bokuto's feeling particularly proud or exuberant. "don't worry, kuroo! you'll know for sure when it's actually meant to be a proposal. it'll be obvious."
he says it like that's obvious, as if a proposal is actually something that will happen in the future. like kuroo shouldn't doubt that it's in the cards. it's a little staggering if he lets himself think of how serious bokuto actually is about them, but kuroo does mirror the sentiment of wanting to grow old together. he just didn't think bokuto would be on the same page. at least, not so soon.
though, they are in their thirties. maybe they've both waited long enough.
kuroo grins, a mixture of sly, teasing and affectionate as he tugs bokuto closer in one quick manoeuvre. his heart beats against his chest as he mutters against bokuto's lips, sealing the deal like a promise, "not if i beat you to it first."
kuroo can hear the whine in that voice as he raises a thin eyebrow in response, watching as bokuto's fingers come up in an aborted motion, hovering around the fringe of his messy bedhead.
"your hair really sucks, dude." it comes out as a groan, and oh, wow.
of all the things, somehow kuroo had never expected that bokuto would be complaining about his bedhead. he's mildly offended; they're supposed to be disaster hair buddies, bokuto isn't supposed to attack him. even if bokuto's hairstyle is a product of choice and kuroo's,
well... isn't.
"bo, what the hell?" he murmurs, the last syllable only barely rolling off his tongue before he feels those fingers thread into his hair, holding his fringe back. bokuto's actually pouting now as he stares at kuroo with his golden, golden eyes, andβ damn.
now's not the time to be gay, kuroo.
"i mean... not that i don't love your hair! cause i do, obviously," bokuto mutters, gaze slightly distracted. "it's just, man... you know..."
kuroo doesn't know. his jumped up brows furrow as he squints inquisitively at bokuto, lips curling into a frown.
"out with it, kou. i gotta know why you'd betray me like this." he huffs, arms almost crossing. obviously, kuroo's not actually offended, but he is a little curious, considering that bokuto's never seemed to have a problem with his hair before today.
he watches as bokuto's gaze turns somehow forlorn, as the fingers in his fringe are removed and his hair flops back over his forehead immediately. bokuto's eyes seem stuck to his disastrous fringe and kuroo, he can't help but feel a little like a lab rat in an experiment cage.
"that!" bokuto exclaims, and it's amazing how his shoulders slump so much and so suddenly that he resembles a popped balloon, "tetsu, your hair... it's... it's unromantic!"
what the fuck?
"what the fuck?" kuroo repeats outloud, voice incredulous, "kouβ"
but bokuto's barrelling on, his tone turning petulant as it had always been wont to do when he's complaining about something, "i mean! sometimes i just wanna tuck a lock of your hair behind your ear or something, you know? that's romantic, right? i saw it in manga and i saw hinata do it to kenma! to kenma, tetsu!"
and, okay, kuroo's momentarily blinded by the image of that, it's too pureβ
"and i was thinking wow, i wanna do that with tetsurou! but then i come back and look at you and your hair..." bokuto trails off then, staring down at said hair, eyes unwittingly judgmental.
kuroo doesn't know if he wants to laugh or bury his face in bokuto's shoulder. leave it to bokuto to say these things so simply. they aren't in some shoujo manga, but bokuto's so earnest about these small random things that kuroo's silly little heart can't help but flutter.
"kou, youβ" he laughs, a little disbelieving, a lot in love. "you're ridiculous, big guy." kuroo doesn't bother to hide the fondness in his tone as he reaches for bokuto's hand, bringing those fingers up to tangle in his hair again.
"you can try it when my hair's down, if you really want. can't guarantee a good experience, since it'll have to be after i shower and my hair will be wet and all," it'll probably be kinda disgusting, actually, trying to tuck wet hair back, "but hey, at least it won't flop back over my face and it'll stay put. maybe?"
it's all about the action anyway, right? the journey and not the end, all that jazz.
bokuto's eyes seem to light up, anyhow, an eager glint coming into them as he nods enthusiastically. kuroo leans forward before he can start pumping his fists, curling an arm over bokuto's shoulders and bringing their faces closer together conspiratorially.
"besides..." he starts, lopsided grin overtaking his features, "that's not the only romantic thing in the world. there's plenty more we can do."
his grin softens as he feels bokuto's arms come around his waist, an understanding dawning in that golden gaze. kuroo brings his other hand up to thumb at bokuto's cheek, a gentle caress that springs forth the megawatt smile he's come to love, heart beating unsteadily.
"yeah? like what, tetsu?" bokuto's tone is teasing, featherlight, full of adoration and kuroo can't help but cackle, cupping bokuto's cheek fully now.
"like this." he whispers, and closes the distance between their lips.
"what's up, akaashi?" bokuto looks up and is surprised to see the unreadable expression on akaashi's face. they're sitting at the college campus cafe, studying. there's no reason akaashi should be looking like that. "see what?"
akaashi's quiet for a second, his lips pursing. "honestly, i didn't know whether to talk about this or not, but... it concerns you."
he pushes his phone forward, and bokuto looks down to see it's paused on some sort of video. akaashi had paused it on a particular timestamp, too, three quarters into the whole length of it.
from the little visible, bokuto can see two very familiar mops of hair.
his eyes widen. "is this one of kenma's streams?"
"yes." akaashi sips at his coffee, nodding. "he did a livestream yesterday and kuroo-san joined him. they were playing a game and talking and... stumbled upon a topic."
"okay?"
"i think you should watch this part of it." akaashi concludes. "you can watch the leadup to it on your own, if you want. but i thought this part was more important.''
bokuto frowns. "is it... bad?"
"if you're asking for my opinion... no, i don't think so." akaashi doesn't sound like he's lying. it loosens the nervous knot in bokuto's chest some as he nods, slowly.
"okay." now that he knows it's probably nothing bad, bokuto can feel excitement growing inside him. he brings the phone closer and settles comfortably into his chair.
then he presses play.
"he likes you."
instantly, kenma's voice filters through, clear as day. bokuto's brows raise in surprise.
"what?" kuroo's voice responds, distracted. a few low disgruntled noises follow as bokuto watches him jerk around like he's fumbling frantically with his mouse. the sound of keys being smashed comes next, loud enough to get picked up by kenma's ultra-spec microphone. bokuto wonders what game they're playing and streaming to the thousands of viewers kenma already has. he would look, but he's too focused on his two friends taking up the bottom half of the screen.
"owl guy. he likes you." kenma says, deadpan as ever. bokuto starts to smile at it, but the sudden loud curse bursting from the phone screen startles him, and he almost drops the device in his hand to kiss cold hard ground. akaashi eyes him wearily.
"please be careful, bokuto-san. that's my phone you're holding." bokuto laughs, sheepish as he re-adjusts his grip and mutters a soft 'sorry'. he's not looking to die by akaashi's hand today; no matter how much patience akaashi has for him, it's not limitless. that much bokuto knows.
"what are you - what?" kuroo is obviously shocked when bokuto glances back at the screen, his mouth hanging open. a robotic voice follows not a second later, announcing that 'player 2 has been eliminated'. he sees kenma roll his eyes, seemingly unfazed that he has to continue the game alone.
"you heard me." kuroo's straight out gaping now as he stares wide-eyed at kenma. bokuto doesn't think he's ever seen kuroo's hazel eyes quite that wide before.
"kenma, are you crazy? you know - you know who we're talking about here, right?" the last part is said in something close to a whisper, as if kuroo was talking about a secret. bokuto furrows his brows. "you're saying owl guy likes me? my best bro, that owl guy?"
kuroo's tone is funny and it holds bokuto's attention for long enough that it takes him another moment to realise they're talking about him. akaashi's face is carefully neutral when bokuto glances back up at him, but honestly bokuto isn't sure how to feel. kuroo's reaction is... he can't tell if it's good or bad.
"yes. i'm not repeating myself." the same robotic voice from before almost covers up the words, a cheerful ding accompanying the 'level cleared' that echoes out of the phone. even through the screen, bokuto can tell that kuroo is all tensed up. it's amazing how kenma can keep at his game while holding that kind of conversation with kuroo.
"you must be mistaken-" kuroo says next, but he's cut off by a subtle huff from kenma.
"i'm not mistaken. you're the one that's mistaken, kuro." there's a tiny pause, nothing but the sounds of mouse clicking and keyboard tapping as kenma probably advances in his level. "chat, does owl guy like kuro? be real."
"kenma-" this time, urgency bleeds into kuroo's tone quite obviously. bokuto can see that kuroo's gearing up to say more, his usually smart mouth parted and his brows pressing together in the way it does when he's about to argue a point.
the words never come. kuroo suddenly freezes, and if it weren't for the continuous tap-tapping still coming from kenma's end, bokuto might have thought that the playback cut off. kuroo's eyes seem stuck to his own screen, barely blinking but roving from left to right as if he were reading something.
bokuto manages to get the few seconds needed to realise he must be reading comments of some sort, probably in response to the sudden question popular streamer kodzuken just casually threw out.
bokuto doesn't manage to get time to wonder if the answers are leaning more towards yes or no when a weird notification sound chimes from the stream.
"owl guy definitely likes kuro-kun, i'm willing to bet with the $500 i just donated lmao. kuro-kun, if i were u i would have married owl guy long ago lol"
the first thought that bokuto has is 'five hundred dollars???', followed by a weird emotions mashup of confusion and humour at the monotonous voice enunciating 'lmao' and 'lol' dryly.
but none of that matters. all of it fades away once bokuto catches the spots of colour rising high on kuroo's cheekbones. kuroo's fallen abnormally quiet, his mouth finally closed. he's shifting weirdly, too; bokuto understands why once he sees the telltale redness over his ears.
he's flustered. kuroo's flustered.
in his peripherals, akaashi also shifts, probably knowing he's at the important bit and trying to give him some more space. a part of bokuto wants to look up and ask akaashi what he thinks about everything, but bokuto can't look away from the blush sitting pretty on kuroo's cheeks. he can see it even if he's just watching a video playback of one of kenma's streams.
"kenma." kuroo's voice finally crackles, a little staticky with how low he speaks. he doesn't say anything more, and it has to be one of their best friends telepathy thing happening as kenma mutters "kuro" back, equally as low.
"level cleared." the robot voice cuts into the moment, followed almost instantly by, "i also think owl guy likes kuro-san! but the real question is, if kuro-san likes owl guy back owo"
that must be another donation comment, bokuto thinks. kuroo has a hand over half his face in the feed, only his eyes visible as he sinks into his chair.
"ok, chat. i'm ending the stream after i clear this level. before you guys break kuro forever." kenma announces in the video, still steadily clicking away. bokuto taps the screen to check the remaining minutes on the video at the same time the voice comes through with another 'level cleared'. that must be a new record with how fast kenma just did that.
true to his word, kenma starts wrapping things up, kuroo quiet next to him all the while. the video runs for another three minutes and bokuto's pretty sure kuroo won't be saying another word. he has that look on his face when he's thinking deeply, bokuto recognises it from his eyes.
he exits the stream and locks the phone, frowning. "'kaashi, kuroo didn't answer the question in the end."
"he didn't." akaashi agrees, slipping his phone back into his pocket once he takes it from bokuto. "but kuroo-san didn't even realise you liked him that way until then."
"if he even realises! he seemed pretty disbelieving."
"i think he'll realise it now. i'm more surprised that kuroo-san's that oblivious. you're not the most subtle person, bokuto-san."
bokuto frowns deeper, shaking his head. "kuroo was blushing. you think he was embarrassed? or... he could...?"
the words trail off. bokuto doesn't know how to ask what he wants to, but it's akaashi. akaashi gets him.
"you would know better than i do, bokuto-san." there's a sigh that leads bokuto to think akaashi won't be saying any more, but to his surprise more words follow, "but if you ask me, i think it was only a matter of time."
bokuto blinks. "what does that mean?"
"it means you and kuroo-san have always got on like a house on fire," akaashi shakes his head, a little exasperation in his eyes, "too much fire, sometimes."
"you're always making time to hang out with each other. kuroo-san always makes it a point to plan something special for your birthday. he remembers the brand of tea your family likes and brings some over whenever he visits. you told me that, bokuto-san."
kuroo does do that. bokuto remembers the first year of college, when he unfortunately fell sick on his birthday. he'd been visiting home for the last few weeks of summer break and had ruined the outdoor barbeque party kuroo planned for him. but kuroo hadn't even batted a lash, only bringing the party indoors and calling all their close friends over to bokuto's.
bokuto can't forget kuroo's smile as he heartily proclaimed that they were going to have a blast. he'd brought a box of his family's favourite tea then, too.
it had warmed bokuto's heart so much.
"but that could be bro behaviour," he pouts. even as he says this, though, his heart is blooming with hope. if kuroo returns his feelings... if kuroo feels the same, bokuto would be the luckiest man alive.
"maybe." akaashi concedes, and it bursts bokuto's bubble a little.
"'kaash, this is the time to be hyping me up, not bringing me down!" he whines.
"i'm not done, bokuto-san," akaashi interjects. there's a tiny smile on his face, bokuto swears sometimes akaashi likes to leave him on tenterhooks as some sort of payback for always having to deal with him. but bokuto knows there isn't anything serious behind the action, nor in akaashi's sighs.
"maybe it could just be 'bro' behaviour, as you say, and nothing more. but that was before. and whether it is or isn't, kuroo-san will probably figure out that you like him romantically soon. or at least start to question it."
oh, god. that's a terrifying thought.
"i think the question is, what you're going to do now, bokuto-san."
"... what i'm going to do...?" he mutters, soft and mostly to himself. akaashi answers him anyway, a benevolence on his part.
"let's say kuroo-san does realise you like him like that. knowing kuroo-san, there's a chance he'll just run away." bokuto sees akaashi pinch the bridge of his nose, sighing again, "even if he likes you back."
"so the question is, what you're going to do now that you know kuroo-san's already starting to think about it." bokuto sees kuroo's deeply thinking eyes in his mind, and he knows akaashi's right.
akaashi's right about more than one thing, actually. he'd said bokuto wasn't the most subtle person out there and bokuto knows that, too. in fact, bokuto hasn't really been trying to hide it. not from anyone, and that includes kuroo.
kuroo really is oblivious and it's as much maddening as it is endearing.
the worst outcome would be kuroo running away, as akaashi had curtly but kindly pointed out. bokuto doesn't want that to happen. maybe it's the hope still ballooning inside him, too, that leads bokuto to such an easy decision.
"i think..." he pauses, rolling the thought around in his head for a second more. he nods decisively, "if kuroo allows, i think i'm going to woo him."
he's not going to let kuroo second-guess anything. it's been at least 24 hours since the stream was live. at least 24 hours of kuroo thinking on it and coming to whatever conclusion his big yet silly brain could come to.
since it's already come to this, bokuto wants kuroo to know that kenma's fans were right. to have no doubt about the feelings that have felt inevitable since the day they met.
"even if kuroo says no, and he doesn't feel the same, i'm sure we'll still be friends."
it'll hurt like hell, but their friendship is strong. bokuto has unshakeable faith in that.
akaashi stares at him for a long second, his features softening as he breaks out into a little smile.
"i'm proud of you, bokuto-san." he says, instantly erasing any hesitance bokuto might have had.
kuroo deserves to be loved right. he's one of the best people bokuto has ever known and probably will ever know. bokuto hopes he can be given the chance to love kuroo like he deserves, but before that...

in the spirit of valentine's, something light and silly:
bokuroo are the friends who take advantage of the 1 for 1s for couples on valentine's. but the thing is, they actually never planned to. they just walked into an eatery wanting to eat, acting like themselves, one of them laughing at something the other said
they order and the person at the cash register tells them the total. they're confused because it's obviously the price of one meal when they've ordered two. the cashier goes, "the couple discount for valentine's day! it's 1 for 1 today for couples!"
bokuto: "huh?"; kuroo: "what?"; the cashier: "have a nice day!"
they walk to their seat stunned and just look at each other blushing. them being them, they laugh it off and go like "sweet, a discount"
except it happens again. and again. and again. they go for dessert, they get it at half price and there's a big red heart drawn over it. they go get boba and the store owner recommends a limited time only drink 'that's big enough to share', turns out it's a drink in a cup decorated full of hearts with a single heart shaped straw
at some point, they stop being able to laugh it off and just start to question why everyone thinks they're a couple. in this scenario both bokuto and kuroo are dense as bricks
at the end of it bokuroo go home with their stomachs and wallets fuller than they'd thought it would be, but their brains are more confused than ever
the pixels of bokuto's face fizzle clearly to life on screen, his eyes squinted and inquisitive. kuroo pulls his phone closer from where he'd had it propped up against his water bottle, letting bokuto in to a close-up view of his slight smirk.
"you clothes thief!" the accusation comes after barely a second, and kuroo chortles.
"why, don't like seeing me in your clothes?" he says, smirk growing wider at the feeling of triumph in his chest. he's been quick with his retorts today, managing to stun even tsukki into silence when he popped by the joint karasuno-nekoma training camp earlier. victory tastes especially sweet when it's against tsukishima, but bokuto is a close second contender.
it's quiet for a moment, a moment that stretches a little long and prompts kuroo to focus back on the call. he's puzzled by the strangeness he sees in bokuto's gaze, visible even through the video feed.
"bo?"
"... if you're gonna steal, put your whole back into it, kuroo. wear one of my hoodies too next time."
oh.
huh?
"uh... kuroo?" bokuto's voice trickles in again, "hey... your video just cut off?"
"oh. oh, yeah, i think my connection's not too good over here, hahaβ"
"wait a minute! are you... are you flustered? did i flusterΒ you?"
"no! also why do you sound so pleased?"
kuroo pointedly ignores the way his ears burn, the same way he ignores toggling his video back on.
two days later, kuroo schedules another visit to the training camp, and gets promptly obliterated by tsukishima asking "why do you smell like bokuto-san all over?"
kuroo curses bokuto in his mind even as his face heats up, remembering the way he'd pulled on another pair of bokuto's slacks and one of bokuto's many hoodies. the memory of bokuto wrapping his strong arms around him and nosing at his neck, muttering things like "you smell good" and "you look good in my stuff" into his ear.
kuroo catches kenma's withering, judgmental stare and ends up almost disintegrating on the spot.
