Entroido's (Specific Galizan Carnival) regional variants by the USC:
"Entroido" comes from latin Introitus, which referers to -in a quite literal way- "Entry". Something that arrives or comes; a beginning, an opening. Carnaval is more of a Spanish form here.
Another interesting variants, some dated back from Medieval times are:
Antroide, Antroiro, Antrudio, Antrudo, Antruido, Entrudio, Entrudo, Entruido, Intrudio, Intruido, ʼntroido, ʼntroiro or (my favourite) nʼtruido.
This is a festivity with as many different traditions as names. Full of Galizan folklore, history, culture and "characters"; which each will all perform different roles, rituals and hold different meaning, this is a highly expected and beloved time for Galizans.
Personally, I'd say here is easy to discern who's celebrating just Carnaval and who's committing more with Entroido.
More than just a carnival, is a performance of identity and heritage. By the RAG (Galizan Real Academy) the words are synonyms, of course, but for the people it doesn't hold the same weight!
Entroido is as well a time of traditional food!
Roscas ó anÃs, Chulas/bolos/sapos, Chores dʼEntroido(2pics), Bica, Galizan stew "Lacón con Ghrelos", Freixóos > Filloas and Orellas.
Bó e ledo n'truido y'all 💜
The bear of Salcedo is one of the most representative traditional masks endemic of the Galician Carnival (entroido). During the carnival, a neighbor dresses in the "bear" gown and frightens the inhabitants of the village, dirtying them with ash. Although the origins of the tradition are uncertain, it's believed to be celebrated to bring fertility and prosperity in the harvest season
