Gonna share some stories of my people; Galizan people, and about our language: Galego. Experiences of violent spanish opression we had to face. A big part of our modern literature relies on preserving and giving a voice to the past, since for a long time our language and beautiful traditions "survived" by pure will with little to none access to writing. So did our experiences as one of the very mistreated nations forced within the Spanish state to this day.
โI am a donkey. I don't know how to talkโ
"The teacher made some cardboard for them kids who spoke in galego. She'd put on them these big donkey ears, along with a sign sticked to them backs with ยซI am a donkey. I don't know how to talkยป (in Spanish) written down.
She (the teacher) did this several times to a friend of mine, and also used to beat her up. I just can't forget about it, my child, for it was so cruel. I didn't even dare to talk about what was going on at school back at home. It was too roughโ.
โHe answered in galego in a spontaneous way. It didn't matter the teacher used to say he had this preference for that student with such an exemplary behavior, he got brutally beaten up. Hit him nonstop with a vimbio stick until red marks showed up on his skin all over the ears and face. The kid couldn't even understand why he got beaten up like that just for answering in galego. I mean, how would anyone understand such thing while being 10 y/o?"

''The nun heard me speaking in galego, she came to me, said that she couldn't understand what I was saying and punished me on my knees at the "hard cement" school yard (a granulated hard texture) in front of all my classmates"

"Back at school, when I was very little, there was a kid who didn't know Spanish. They hanged on his back a sign saying he was a donkey"

"Tied up to a chair for speaking galego at school. Locked down in the classroom closet because of saying words in the ยซforbidden tongueยป. On the knees on chickpeas because you didn't answer the teacher's question in spanish. The brutality against the galizan youth through generations left deep scars we all still suffering from with no care nor reparations"

This was very common through all XX.
Still, last "known" case happened in the year 2002. Two little kids were forced to write โI will not speak gallego at classโ 200 times.
"There was this punishment for speaking galego, you had to press a coin with the tip of your nose against the wall for hours. If the coin ever fell, their aggressions increased eachtime... These punishments came with the chants
ยซThe gallego is for hillbillies/pagans/savages. You must speak the language of the Angels and God's Empireยป.
Another case, shared by Alfonso Eirรฉ, teachers charged against a student at the Seminario de Lugo, because he refused to stop speaking in galego after several "warnings" and threats.
"[โฆ] O. P Rancaรฑo didn't let him finish, the professor punched him on the head making him fall to the ground. When the student tried to stand back up, he kicked him on the back and ass "Puskas" style, and immediately stated that he would remain on his knees through the whole basketball game, in the middle of the school yard.
Also the P.E teacher who was around, stated another (very popular) punishment on top of it: he had to press a coin against a column with his nose. Everytime it fell, he'd hit him in the back of the head (na caluga) provoking the kid to scratch his nose against the stone over and over".

People keep silencing, erasing and apropiating our culture and language to this day. Spain keeps denying our right to self determination and exploiting the land from the inside, fascist, imperialism propaganda everywhere. For them, we are the "completely assimilated" ones. Yet we keep being mistreated in many ways, especially if we proudly commit to our own national identity which, for some reason, they take as a personal threat.

They'll never have an "are we the baddies?" moment because fascists are obsessed with being the bad guys. In a way it's a natural outcome of using Nazism as a cultural shorthand for badguyism; a big part of the appeal of the far right is getting to violate that post-war shibboleth. some people really do need to start reminding themselves that the answer to "why didn't the character just do [something entirely different]" is often simply "because then there wouldn't be a story"
I don't know who needs to hear this but you need to stop dehumanising people even if those people are "abusers" or "creeps" because you need to understand that you are not immune to doing something equally as bad
Abusers and creeps are not some species of especially heinous animal or alien or monster wearing the face of a human. They're people. And you NEED to drill it into your head that they are people because you NEED to remember that people are capable of doingn heinous shit. And you are a person. And your loved ones are people.
By emotionally classifying people who have done heinous things as subhuman filth incapable of thinking and feeling and acting just like you and me, and by using that emotional dehumanization as a reason to deny those people any compassion or support on a systemic level, you risk becoming blind to abuse/violence perpetrated by someone close to you or even yourself. Because if "abusers don't deserve rights", then you won't ever want to admit or accept that you or a loved one is perpetrating abuse, and that makes stopping the abuse or preventing further abuse much harder. This is how you end up excuaing abusive behaviour on the grounds that, since you don't see someone as a disgusting subhuman pile of garbage therefore they can't possibly be An Abuser, Trademark
And here'a the even harder pill to swallow: since the world isn't split into "abusers" and "good people", in the same way you or someone you love can inflict abuse/violence on others, the people who HAVE inflicted abuse/violence on others can, in fact, change and become better people
There is no bottomless chasm of moral uncleanliness that someone can run off and fall into and get stuck in forever. People can do better. Yes, even those people. You HAVE to accept this. Otherwise not only is there no motivation for anyone to try and do better (which is when people become stuck in a cycle of violence and abuse they don't want to escape), but your idea of a perfect justice system doesn't look any different from Literal Christian Hell. And I HOPE you understand that Literal Christian Hell is, to put it very lightly, not a good justice system.
Reading about an arsenic murder case in which probably a daughter killed her mom with poisoned clam chowder but she was acquitted because the defense were like โcan you prove that ANYONE wouldnโt die after eating takeout clam chowder delivered by children in August? In 1896?โ and the jury were like no yeah fair point I too have had clam chowder stomach
