Burkina Faso Volunteers help the fight against Malaria at the grassroots level! In these photos, a group of Volunteers are giving a demonstration on how a bed net can be an effective way to block the mosquitos that might be carrying the disease.
April 25 is World Malaria Day. This year, malaria will kill more than 400,000 people around the world. The vast majority will be kids in sub-Saharan Africa. Each year on April 25, organizations around the world unite to highlight the need for continued investment and sustained political commitment for malaria prevention and control. In 2005, the United States launched the President’s Malaria Initiative (PMI) with the goal to reduce malaria-related mortality across 15 high-burden countries in sub-Saharan Africa through a rapid scale-up of four proven and highly effective malaria prevention and treatment measures, including indoor residual spraying (IRS). In this photograph, a team of IRS spray operators prepare to conduct a spray campaign in Chipata, Zambia. IRS involves the spraying of residual insecticide on the interior walls of homes to kill mosquitoes, thereby interrupting malaria transmission. A decade ago, malaria was almost certainly a death sentence for poor children in Africa. Now, communities are creating a healthier, happier and more sustainable future by stopping malaria in its tracks. #EndMalaria (Photograph courtesy of PMI.)
Incredible news! The country, which hoped to eliminate the disease by 2030, is now a full decade ahead of schedule. "Malaysia’s success serves as a beacon for the region," the Asia Pacific Leaders Malaria Alliance stated. Read more global health news at this link.

Malaria may not dominate headlines today, but it remains one of the world’s most persistent infectious diseases. Spread through the bites of infected mosquitoes, it continues to impact millions of people every year, especially in tropical and developing regions. On World Malaria Day 2026, attention has turned to countries that eliminated malaria after meeting WHO standards. Their different paths show that sustained surveillance, public health systems and long-term planning remain crucial.
