Legionnaires' disease is a severe and potentially fatal form of pneumonia caused by Legionella bacteria. People catch it by breathing in mist or vapor contaminated with the bacteria—typically from cooling towers, hot tubs, or large plumbing systems. It is not contagious and cannot be spread person-to-person. Symptoms usually appear 2 to 14 days after exposure and closely resemble other types of pneumonia. Prompt diagnosis is essential. Healthcare providers typically confirm the infection through a Urine Antigen Test and sputum or lung fluid cultures. Treatment requires a course of specific antibiotics, and while most people make a full recovery, severe cases may require hospitalization.
