It was always just the two of them.

For years it had been just the two of them.

The boy with metal legs and the girl who stole things.

Every fight.

Every retreat.

Every plan.

Every kiss.

Even now that they were miles apart, Emerald felt like there was a presence missing by her side, empty air that shouldn't be left vacant.

She held herself as an uncharacteristically chill wind blew.

Wherever Mercury was now, she thought, she hoped he was safe.

And that soon, it would be the two of them again, not just one of them.

Lines:

Mercury: Looks like you have some new friends, Em.

Mercury: You made your choice.

Emerald: I know you can’t leave.

You don’t have to pretend with me.

Mercury: I’m used to it.

When it comes to physical contact, Emerald and Mercury are polar opposites: Emerald craves it while Mercury avoids it. However, I’d like to think that mercury would make an exception for Emerald.

(This scenario is set right after volume 3)

Emerald: (Crying while holding the hand of an unconscious Cinder) Please…you gotta wake up…I can’t do this without you.

Mercury: (Leaning on the door’s frame) You know she can’t hear you, right?

Emerald: (Wipes the tears of her face) Get out of here Mercury. I’m not in the mood for your bullshit.

Mercury: Neither I am for yours, but life isn’t usually fair, is it?

Emerald: (Turns around to look at him) What do you want?

Mercury: I came to suggest you to get some sleep. And by suggest I mean tell you to do it, like it or not.

Emerald: I need to be here when she wakes up.

Mercury: So the first thing she sees is a sleep deprived girl that looks like a zombie? I thought you liked her.

Emerald: This isn’t the time for jokes, Mercury! She could’ve died!

Mercury: (Rolls his eyes) Salem said that she’s fine. And the moustache douchebag is checking on her every day. There’s no need to worry.

Emerald: (Starts trembling) And what if they’re wrong? What if she never wakes up? Then what are we gonna do?

Mercury: (Grabs her by the shoulders) Then we’ ll figure out something, like we always do. You have to calm down, Em.

Emerald: (Crying) I know, it’s just…I can’t do this Merc…(hugs him)

Mercury: (Freezes)….

Emerald: (Realizes what she’s done and steps back) I’m sorry! I didn’t mean to…

Mercury: (Awkward) It’s okay…you just caught me off-guard.

Emerald: (Dejected) I’m really sorry

Mercury: (Sighs) I said it’s fine (hugs her) See? I’m not mad.

Both stay hugged for a few minutes.

Mercury: Feeling better?

Emerald: (Sniffles) A bit.

Mercury: Are you gonna listen to me now?

Emerald: I guess I will.

Mercury: Try to get some rest, okay?

Emerald: I’ll try. Goodnight Merc.

Mercury: (Sees her leaving the room) Goodnight Em.
