About the elves’ immortality
I had this thought for a while and I am ready to share it with you folks now.
I’ll just get right to the point: I am sceptical about the elves ever having been immortal. Okay, here me out.
I won’t deny that there is certain evidence supporting this version of the elves’ past; for one there are the legends of the dalish talking about the nature of the ancient elvehn, also Solas, Mythal and Abelas and his sentinels exist and Solas clearly seems to be confirming the statement as true at the end of Trespasser.
But namely in Trespasser there are some hints that made me doubt this accepted lore. For one it’s the tidbits of Fen’Harel’s propaganda against the Evanuris. In order to convince the elven slaves to oppose their masters he argues that they are just as mortal as the slaves themselves and therefore neither better than them and most certainly not gods. If the elves were generally immortal why highlight the fact of the Evanruis’ mortality? Why not highlight other ordinary needs the Evanuris share with their slaves. Dying shouldn’t be familiar to the generally immortal elves and thus can’t be a way to form a solid argument against the Evanuris. Immortality shouldn’t be special.
The other strange thing about the notion of elven immortality is one of the Evanuris themselves: Falon’Din. According to dalish lore he is the god of death, guiding the departed souls through the beyond. Again, if the elves were immortal why the need for a god of death? There could have been the occasional murder or accident but in general it should have been very rare for Falon’Din to accompany any passing souls. Of course he also guides those who enter Uthenera and yet he became known specifically as the guardian of the dead. Even his name means ‘friend of the dead’. In the context of supposed immortality Falon’Din’s whole concept seems out of place and doesn’t make any sense.
So with what does this leave us? I think elves in general were never immortal. Fen’Harel’s propaganda and Falon’Din’s role suggest that immortality may have been a luxury rather than nature. And the Gods and other elves powerful enough could achieve immortality, while ordinary elves were mortal. This could explain why specifically stressing that the Evanuris could also die was a strong statement. It explains why there is need for a god of death. And even looking at the few ancient elves we know it still makes sense. The immortal elves we know are either ‘gods’ or tied to them in a special way. The sentinels may be slaves as the vallaslin suggests but they are no ordinary servants. Their special task made them eligible for immortality. Perhaps the absence of the veil promoted a general longevity but at this point I think the modern elves who may be following Solas’ plan for liberation are in for a very nasty surprise.
when you think you’ve translated what the fear demon said to Solas but you know that the one unknown word in the damn thing will come back and ruin your translation later on..... Other than that it’s a pretty boring threat actually.
this was supposed to be a full age chart till present but i got lazy sobs
