Season 5 is about El saving Max.
I'll rephrase.
Season 5 is about El saving the personified symbol in El's life of her independence as a woman and ability to be happy without a man.
Max came into her life as a representation of El's independence from men, "Not Hopper, not Mike", and ability to enjoy, even love, her time without them. Over the course of season 3 she helped her to trust her own tastes and choices, know herself outside of others and not invalidate her intuition and decisions. She encouraged her autonomy.
So I'll repeat
Season 5 is about El going back and saving her independence from men, joy in singleness, and loyalty to herself.
Literally and figuratively, simultaneously. In prioritizing Max, she prioritizes "Not Hopper, not Mike, you".
All plots are intertwined so beautifully and effect each character in different ways.
And they symbolically set her up to be away from her self-loyalty in season 4 when she was dependent on Mike, then lose it almost completely when she stayed with him.
Then leave him to go back and fight to bring it back to life.
Season 5 is about El saving Max but it's really about El saving her loyalty to herself and that's so beautiful.
You know I love a good visual parallel (especially a reverse).
Mike did something wrong, she's grumpy, she slams the door, but the first time she went to Max and the second time she thinks of her and cries because she can't.
