He loves El and he loves her openly and comfortably. Until he is starkly reminded of how it is perceived and it all starts to feel like a lie, and one he has to repeat, and now it's uncomfortable again.

Super sweet reunions in seasons where Mike was El's whole thing for the first three episodes only

and came at the end of episode eight (of nine), an episode which did not focus on each other at all with much more major focus on the actual points of their arcs with this scene only serving as fluff/relief from the plot-central angst we just witnessed as their relationship is very sweet and offers said feeling but is not in itself the actual central plot at all

but even their reunion when continued is somewhat one-upped by her reunion with somebody else

that is either played itself as bigger or was more consistently built up in the season.

Additionally, the reunion is a sweet moment but not the reason for her return.

She was right about something changing. She was just wrong that it was her.

Character A wants character B to reciprocate their feelings the whole season. At the end character B says that they do and we get no response from character A, but it's simply because the plot moved on too quickly. We assume that character A is happy and there is no need for confirmation because last we checked, them receiving this from character B is what they wanted so receiving it should be the end and we don't need the reaction.

...but we do. Oh, we do. It is factual, undeniable including to shipper as it is not even contradictory that Mike could not say it back to El in 3x08. And that was hidden subtly but he couldn't he didn't. I'm sure plenty of people misremembered him saying it but he. did. not. We know this. So why is this time with El any different?
