with childhood betrothal between wwx and lwj (but really a business agreement between their sects don't think about it too hard) where the general agreement was either they'd reach the age of maturity and get married, or they'd reach the age of maturity and the businesses would have had 15 yrs to solidify a partnership and so it didn't matter

THEY DO NOT GET ALONG. lwj is very rule-oriented and wwx is an ADHD gremlin

So at the age of maturity (I have not decided if this is a cultivator-fantasy version of china where marriage equality is also a thing, or like Canada, so the age this happens may change depending) wwx has his birthday and then goes NAH to marrying lwj because he doesn't like him that much and can't see himself married to him

They then go to university in different countries and don't see each other again except a few times commenting on mutual friends on social media

Think the Swan Princess animated movie as the general vibes for them growing up together.

THEN THE STORY OPENS A DECADE LATER:

wwx sees a very hot man, like the hottest man he's ever seen and he's having a crisis about it

wwx then realizes this very hot man is his former betrothed

wwx starts the mortifying ordeal of falling for the person he basically rage quit

(and could have been having sex with for like yeeeaaarrrssssss; so much sex, so many years)

do you know that P&P post about how Darcy had to be turned down to recognize he had to work on himself to be worthy of Elizabeth? general vibe for lwj.

And so wwx fumbles his way through all his conflicting feelings in true wwx fashion, which is to simultaneously address it and also not stare directly at it at all.

ALSO

They use each other's courtesy names until they don't.

It's very sexy.
