Nuclear power plant Fleet Shows Mixed Operational Performance
India's Nuclear power plant fleet experienced another operational update after Kudankulam Unit 1 temporarily went offline following generator protection operation on 8 July. The Southern Regional Load Despatch Centre expects the 1,000 MW generating unit to resume operations on 12 July. Power generation news indicates that while the outage is temporary, several other nuclear units remain under long-duration maintenance.
Kaiga Unit 1 has remained out of service since March 2025 because of coolant-channel and feeder replacement works. Madras Atomic Power Station Unit 1 has continued under planned maintenance since January 2018, while Rajasthan Atomic Power Station Unit 1 remains listed for future decommissioning subject to regulatory clearance. These extended outages reduce available generating capacity despite India's installed nuclear infrastructure.
CEA statistics indicate that national nuclear generation exceeded programme by 3.7 per cent during the April-to-July period. Southern and western regions remained ahead of planned generation, whereas northern region output lagged programme by 18.4 per cent. Nuclear generation contributed 153 MU on 9 July, representing around 3 per cent of daily electricity production.
