Despite the frustration of a 52-seat majority becoming a 51-seat majority, tonight’s result is in fact, a long-term victory for the Republican Party. Had Moore gone to the Senate, he would have faced a Senate Ethics Committee investigation. Had that investigation brought back anything less than a full exoneration, GOP senators would have faced the decision of whether to expel him. As is, Moore could be counted on to create new controversies every time he faced the cameras; every Republican would constantly be asked if they agreed with their fellow senator’s controversial contentions about “reds and yellows,” unnecessary Constitutional Amendments, the wisdom of Vladimir Putin, or whether America was the focus of evil in the modern world.
It's Never Fun to Lose a Senate Seat, But the GOP Dodged a Bullet With Roy Moore's Defeat
Given that historically bad candidates likely won’t be the norm in races moving forward, the Democrats need to work on turning out their base, and not rely on Republicans disgusted by Moore or Trump. It’s clear that the path for Democrats long-term is towards social and economic justice, even in historically conservative regions like the South; whether the national party is smart enough to recognize the opportunity and take it, however, remains to be seen.
Why Roy Moore’s loss should give you hopee
It's great Doug Jones won. But the Democratic party actually needs to deliver to voters of color and poor white people. Identity politics might win an election here or there, but it's not a solution, especially when it doesn't deliver results.

This, of course, in the service of a president* who skipped Vietnam because his feet hurt. Nobody in that president*’s family ever has served in the military, although the Klan-curious paterfamilias once fought bravely in the battle against black people living in his buildings. Eventually, you grow tired of this grubby hucksterism. You grow tired of the people who cheer for it. You grow tired of it all, and exhausted in the attempt to make sense of human beings so obviously jonesing for the kind of illusions in which a former investment banker in a camo jacket and 31 dress shirts is really one of them, and in which a judge who has been credibly accused of sexual misconduct with teenage girls is really as close a friend to Jesus as they are.
Roy Moore Rally Speakers from Steve Bannon to Louie Gohmert Bash Doug Jones Campaign
At the risk of sounding like every liberal Yankee bogeyman flitting through the minds of the assembled, this event was completely nuts. It was a naked appeal to unreason. It was the Rose Parade of empowered ignorance. It was the Royal Wedding of Stupid and Mean. It was the Celebration of the Lizard Brain. The Id was in the saddle, and it was riding the crowd, and the barker at this particular carnival of fools was quite happy to bring all the suckers in out of the Alabama dark and into the freak show he’d created.

If Roy Moore wins, they'll spend the next year yoking every Republican they can to the accused child predator and a president who welcomed him into the GOP fold. They'll be quick to remind everyone of all the other comments Moore has made against Muslims and gays and in favor of Vladimir Putin’s view of America as evil, as well as his rosy view of slave-era America.
