The Prisoner Prince
Part 1 of a longer story; this is the Eldin story but starting at the Good Bits
Content: self-sacrificial whumpee, medieval-esque setting, royal whumpee (sort of), royal whumper, chained, kept as prisoner, male whumpee
An execution day should be gloomier, he thought, as the sun beat down upon the square. On a raised platform were the gallows, and in a throne brought for the occasion, sat the Usurper King, surrounded by his guard. True to his word that he would personally oversee the execution of all rebels captured.
Eldin took a deep breath, closing his eyes for a long moment. The trumpet blade and the crowd parted as guards dragged the prisoners through to the square and onto the platform below the gallows. Barefoot, bruised, and bloodied, they still stood with their shoulders back defiantly. Dale, their best planner and a loyal friend, had a black eye and split lip, but his good eye glared at the king. Ruth, his wife, stood staunchly next to him. And Melina. Eldin’s heart stuttered as he saw her. Her hair was matted and her face bruised, but her eyes still flashed with a rebellious gleam.
It was time.
He removed his hood and pushed forward, breaking free of the crowd.
“Stop.”
All eyes turned to him.
The king laughed sardonically. “And who exactly are you?”
Eldin let the cloak fall, showing the tunic he wore was brazenly marked with the royal crest. He tossed a small object in the air and caught it. Those around him gasped and a murmur spread through the crowd.
“I think you know, Uncle.” He gestured to the crowd. “They certainly do, do they not? They know the story, how when your brother fell he had a young son, only an infant. How some say the infant was rescued, and the missing signet ring of the king was taken with him.”
The king’s face darkened. “And you claim you’re my nephew, then?”
“I am.” Eldin tossed him the signet ring, and the king’s eyes widened as he caught it. “You know the significance of that ring, my lord.”
The king was silent.
Eldin could feel Melina’s eyes on him but he couldn’t look at her.
“I will recognize you and surrender myself to you, but I only ask that you let these go. Their attempt at rebellion, if they truly even are rebels, is pointless now, and I would ask a boon of mercy.”
He could see the calculation in the king’s eyes. The king stood, opening his arms wide in a benevolent gesture. “Of course! It brings me great joy to have my lost nephew returned to me, and it calls for celebration!”
The guards looked confused, but at the king’s gesture, the prisoners were unbound. Looking somewhat dazed, they stepped down from the platform. Eldin looked at Dale as he neared him and lowered his voice.
“Get them out, get to safety. There are friends waiting who will aid you. Do not come for me.”
Dale gave him a nod. “I hope you know what you’re doing.” He began to guide the two women through the crowd.
Melina paused, not quite touching Eldin. He couldn’t meet her eyes. “I’m sorry. I couldn’t… forgive me, Melina.”
Then she was gone through the crowd, and he stepped onto the platform and knelt before the usurper king. The king lifted him up and embraced him, with tension in his posture belying his facade of benevolence. His eyes were cold as he released him from the hug and positioned the young man by his side. “Let this day be a feast day to celebrate my lost nephew, now found and reclaimed!”
The crowd cheered and began to disperse, and the king and his retinue turned back to the castle, Eldin in their midst.
Once inside the gates, the king dropped all pretense. “My private audience chamber. Now,” he bit out.
The guards grabbed Eldin’s arms to direct him there roughly.
In the room, the king sat himself on the throne to face the young man. A guard struck the back of Eldin’s knees as they threw him to the floor, forcing him to kneel.
“You think you can play me, can undermine me with your claims?” The king’s voice was a venomous hiss. “You will regret it.”
Eldin straightened his shoulders, remaining kneeling but looking the king in the eye. The king stood and stepped forward to tower over him and backhanded him across the face with a ringed hand. Eldin felt his lip split and blood begin to trickle down his chin.
“In public, you will be my heir under my guidance as a regent. If you challenge me, you will regret it. And in these walls, you are nothing. You will kneel in my presence, or stand when commanded. And you will speak only when I permit it. Do. You. Understand?” Spittle hit Eldin’s cheek with those last words, shouted in his face.
He clenched his jaw and nodded tightly. The king waved a dismissive hand. “Take him away.”
They dragged him off, to an ornate chamber. He looked at the tapestried walls and fine bed in confusion, having expected a cell.
One of the guards laughed then, cruelly. Another brought out heavy chains and he found his wrists manacled, one chained to each of the posts at the foot of the bed, leaving him sitting on the hard stone floor.
“Maybe if you behave, you’ll earn the bed,” the tallest of the guards jeered. With a parting kick to his ribs, sending him sprawling to one side and yanking against the chain holding his left arm, they left.
Finally alone, he leaned his head back against the wood of the bedframe and wept.
