She was a captive, just as this mysterious being was, andthe woman couldn’t help but be curious of who this new prisoner was. She wasn’ttold much beyond the fact she wasn’t allowed to see him for… ‘reasons’, butsince when did she obey her captor’s orders? Upon making it down to the lowerdeck, she ventured forward to the large, box container to pry open the topwithout a second thought.

Hardly a chance to look, water splashed violently about andsomething rather wet and leathery in texture smacked her across the face. She hadn’ta moment to even regain herself and understand what had happened when somethinggrabbed her by the hair and, in that second of panic, she realized a naked mancovered in water had her and was threatening to cut her throat with his nailsif she got too close to him.

His angered expression slowly relaxing, Edward sighed outangrily that who he had grabbed wasn’t the man he intended to kill. “It ismerely you,” he said in irritable disappointment, releasing her.

She gasped, bringing her hands to her chest where her heartthreatened to leap from her body. “Y-You know me, sir…?”

“The pirates speak of you,” Edward said simply, relaxingback within the crate of water. “I know you are some prisoner as I am.”

The woman was confused until she saw it in a brief instance—afish tail slowly shimmering in the candlelight before disappearing back underthe surface of the water. “A merman…?” she gasped, but the lights were swingingback and forth given the roughness of the waves, so who knew if it was true ornot? She might have just been hallucinating.

“One foolish enough to be captured as this,” spoke Edwardfreely on the matter, damning himself in that sentence for being careless. Hisblue eyes turned to her after he looked about his surroundings as if debatingon how to escape. “We are the same, you and I—both ‘treasures’ these ladsthirst for in terms of enjoyment.” The king of the sea sighed, shaking his headas he slunk back in his watery tomb. “But my end won’t be nearly as pleasant asyours, I wager.”

The thought made her blood run cold, and she stood theretrying to warm herself from the fearful chill. “I can aid you in your escape…”

“Why would you?” Edward asked, sounding skeptical at thethought. What was in it for her?

“You are a creature of my fantasies…a being told of inbedtime stories that I took comfort in as a little girl,” she whispered in thedim lighting below deck. “To see such a being locked up in chains or worse ismore than I can bear. You should be allowed to be free,” she whispered. Her handtried to move towards his own, but halfway there, her fingers recoiled as if torethink the thought until finding peace in the idea and placing it there uponhis to realize he was indeed real.
