Five Near Misses between Harbour Seal Selkie Yuuri and Harp Seal Selkie Viktor:

Viktor keeps disappearing on Thursday afternoons. Yuuri knows this because he sees Christophe dogsitting Makkachin at the bar. He knows he’s not supposed to pry, but he asks Christophe about it anyway, and Christophe shrugs, says something about a call to his agent. ‘But then why would he need to get a dogsitter?’ he wonders. Christophe asks him to write down the question, and when Yuuri does, he reads it, sighs, and shrugs again.

Viktor almost catches him that one time they’re at the little cove, though it’s hardly catching when part of Yuuri wants Viktor to know, more than anything, what he’s capable of. But somehow Viktor doesn’t quite add two and two together, doesn’t quite form the line between Katsudon and Yuuri, and it burns inside him like a secret he’s dying to tell.

Viktor rambles like nobody’s business and sometimes his words don’t string together right, and Yuuri wonders if it’s because he’s speaking English as a second language, or something else. He doesn’t make a comment on it -- he’d be a bit of a hypocrite if he made comments about how people communicate -- but it’s interesting, all the same, how Viktor peppers his sentences with sounds that have no meaning.

But Viktor is quiet around Nishigori, and quieter around Jean-Jacques Leroy, especially when the man brags about buying his fiancee a “whitecoat muff”. He curls into Yuuri’s side, turns his face away. He shakes. Yuuri squeezes his hand and doesn’t comment on the way his shirt invariably gets a water stain on the shoulder minutes later.
