Breaking Barriers Since 1920: Celebrating a Century of Women at Oxford University! 📜🥳

Today, we tip our hats to history as we mark a monumental moment in academia. 📚 Back in 1920, women were granted the power to enter the hallowed halls of Oxford University as full-fledged members, opening doors to a world of knowledge and endless possibilities. 👩‍🎓

There is a photo circulating on social media that reads “What if…the cure to cancer is trapped inside the mind of someone who can’t afford an education? What if…the cure for cancer was trapped inside the mind of a 14 year-old African American boy from who got into a fight and was kicked out of school, charged with felonious assault and sent to a detention center? What if the school-to-prison pipeline never existed and everyone had equal access to a quality education regardless of race, ability or socioeconomic status?

The educational disparities that exist in the country for black and brown boys are inexcusable. Black males are overrepresented in special education and underrepresented in advanced placement, honors and gifted programs. Black and Hispanic students with disabilities face much higher rates of school disciplinary actions, drop-out rates and experience lower rates of graduation. We must address the achievement gap that continues to divide African American and Hispanic students from their white and Asian peers.

The education and welfare of our black and brown boys is not a black or white issue, it’s a human issue. It’s an issue that we must address now or else we will lose another generation of black and brown boys to prisons and graveyards.

I want to share a poem with you called “Growing Good Corn” by an author whose name is unknown:

There once was a farmer who grew award-winning corn. Each year he entered his corn in the state fair where it won a blue ribbon.

One year a newspaper reporter interviewed him and learned something interesting about how he grew it. The reporter discovered that the farmer shared his seed corn with his neighbors.

“How can you afford to share your best seed corn with your neighbors when they are entering corn in competition with yours each year?” the reporter asked.

“Why sir,” said the farmer, “didn’t you know? The wind picks up pollen from the ripening corn and swirls it from field to field. If my neighbors grow inferior corn, cross-pollination will steadily degrade the quality of my corn. If I am to grow good corn, I must help my neighbors grow good corn.
