Day 15 of “If They Weren’t From Their House” Month:
Which Great House of Westeros would Edmure Tully be part of/affiliated with if he wasn’t a Tully?
House Targaryen
House Stark
House Lannister
House Baratheon
House Greyjoy
House Arryn
House Martell
House Tyrell
I remember the first time I read it, I thought Robb was unfair to scold Edmure for not letting Tywin cross The Trident, and then the second time I blamed Edmure more.
But even in my interpretation most sympathetic to Robb it's still partly his mistake. There's a negligible risk of Edmure betraying Robb so it costs basically nothing to have Edmure sit in on the plans being made to remove any risk of confusion.
You don't convince a 30 year old medieval lord with an inferiority complex by telling him to sit in the castle and let the army go past because he might get hurt. You could convince him tho by saying that you're giving him an important command to trap the army on the wrong side of the river. Let Tywin cross and then we can crush him between are two armies when he tries to cross back.
It's a bit of a hindsight's 20/20 thing but it's poor man management that was the difference between crushing the Lannisters, and all the problems that led to Robb's downfall.
And tbh I've just had a look trying to find what made me blame Edmure and I'm going back to it being Robb's fault anyway. Some passages say Edmure is commanded to "hold Riverrun and guard his rear" and while it seem like Edmure might have added the "guard his rear" bit, the commands are still kinda ambiguous. I can't find anything where Robb commands Edmure to let Tywin pass or not engage the Lannisters or anything (although I'm not 100% if that's because it's not there). So he tries to take initiative and fucks up because no one explains to him what the role he's actually supposed to be playing is. That's command's fault.
honestly i am just surprised edmure tully is still alive

8.06 scenes – The Council
( from left to right ) Samwell Tarly, Unnamed Riverland Lord, Edmure Tully, Arya Stark, Bran Stark, Sansa Stark, Ser Brienne of Tarth, Ser Davos Seaworth, Lord Gendry Baratheon, Lord Une, Unnamed Northern Lord, Yara Greyjoy, Unnamed Dornish Prince, Lord Robin Arryn, Lord Yohn Royce, Unnamed Vale Lord.
I find it interesting that the first group represents the Riverlands, the second the north, the third the Stormlands, and the fifth the vale. However, compared to the others the fourth group (ie: northern lord, Yara Greyjoy, and the unnamed Dornish Prince) was a waste. Granted Yara belonged at that council without question, but why have a fourth northern representative there especially if at least 7 of the other council members would support the north out of loyalty, familial connection, or friendship? And why bring in a brand new character (the unnamed handsome Dornish Prince) if Dorne is relatively irrelevant to the story D&D wrote?
As much as I hate to admit it -They should have tossed the unnamed Northern Lord sitting next to Yara aside for Bronn if they were going to commit to giving him Highgarden. Or at least put some other unnamed lord from the Reach there until Bronn was handed Highgarden. It’s clear the fourth group (Yara & co) were meant to be half-assed Dany loyalists only there to provide momentary drama/conflict when it should have served as a pillar for three very important parts of the 7 kingdoms.
Also while we’re at it - D&D wanted to subvert our expectations for as long as possible by seating the Stormlands in the center instead of the Starks, as it’s traditionally where the acting ruler(s) sit. In another life I might give D&D credit for the subliminal message that the Starks are choosing to step away from the center of attention and isolate themselves. But lets be honest - D&D aren’t that smart, and the whole council meeting still revolves around the Stark Siblings so none of that was accomplished.
TLDR: scene looks great cinematically - but holds little substance when everyone besides Yara and the Prince are Stark loyalists. fair vote indeed...
Here's to Edmure Tully for being the comic relief I desperately needed during this trainwreck of a finale
House Tully of Riverrun is one of the Great Houses of the Seven Kingdoms. Lord Hoster Tully, the Lord Paramount of the Trident, rules over the riverlands from the Tully seat of Riverrun. Their sigil is a silver trout leaping on a striped field of blue and mud red, and their house words are "Family, Duty, Honor."
