What's in a (Sindarin) Name?
The fact that in Rings of Power the female Elf who is Brimby's apprentice is literally named Jewel-Smith-ia... (Sindarin mírdan means jewel smith and her name is Mirdania)
Incidentally, iâ means void/abyss among other things, but I'm thinking that's just a coincidence... Although "-ia" is not a common female name ending in any of the Elvish languages or dialects that I know, so... Maybe she's named "Jewel Smith Emptiness" after all.
In case anyone is interested btw:
S. mîr n.: "jewel, treasure"
S. tân n.: "wright, smith, builder"
Compound words cause mutation of the second component (and vowel shortening in this case), i.e., tân > -dan
Extra fun fact: the name Círdan literally means "Ship Builder" (from cair "ship" and tân). We see you JRRT 👀
Also, if they had wanted to do it correctly, they might have named her Mírdaneth. At least that's formally a plausible Sindarin name.
Disclaimer: I'm not JRRT.
